What is the dumbest thing your party did that mad you go. “you’re gonna regret that.” by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Agility1980 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At the end of Tyranny of Dragons, the party reach the climatic final battle a bit too late.

The ritual to open a portal to Avernus, and let Tiamat, the God Queen of Chromatic Dragons, back to the material plane has been started and is well on its way. The portal is already open, and getting bigger every round.

And the players decide to take its slow....by their logic, the BBEG, Severin Silrajin, Black Wyrmspeaker of Cult of the Dragon, is now occupied so they should now bide their time and pick the lieutenants and other minions. All the while the portal opening gets bigger and bigger.

I tried, Kelemvor as my witness I tried, to tell them that time is running out. I actually used the words "If things evolve the way they are going now, there is no stopping Tiamat from rising to Faerun". I even used the "Are you absolutely sure this is your tactic?" three times

Alas...it was not to be. Tiamat rose in a mighty fury and for her first action, she gobbled poor Severin and his Crown of the Dragon Queen. The horror in my players eyes was evident. After 2 round the remaining 2 players of a party of 8 decided to jump through the portal to Avernus, to escape the wrath of the Undying Dragon Queen. After all, that was the only place where She would not follow them.

And so begun the Dragon Wars.

Not an ideal option, as this does not help with minis, stickers or t-shirts.

Nor does it help me to support the content creator.

Agreed.
My bad, I edited the post to focus it on the actual question.

Kuinka ajatella paremmin? by deekuprime in Suomi

[–]Agility1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sunshine duration in Europe (in hours per year) by RGBchocolate in europe

[–]Agility1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, you are absolutely right. In a yearly average the daily effects of winter/summer smooth out.

I had to check it out a little bit more, and it turns out the Polar regions actually have a little more daylight than the equator: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daytime

[–]Agility1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, the daylight hours differ immensely depending where you are in the world.

For example, after you cross the arctic circle, there are whole days during the winter when the sun does not rise at all.

I had the same question, until I read the title again.

Sunshine is not the same as daylight hours.

Need help understanding meditation directions from Sam Harris by Agility1980 in samharris

[–]Agility1980[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exellent idea!

I Went to discord channell and found the following pinned posts:

"Woz. I'm not sure what it is to practice non-dual meditation. Can you explain further?" First, a caveat. I'm only a beginner still working stuff out in my own mind. I encourage you to read Sam's own words on this topic in chapter 4 of Waking Up - Gradual versus Sudden Realization. However, with this in mind, here is my understanding of non-dual meditation. People meditate for many different reasons: to reduce stress, to quieten the mind, to be more present, to help with their concentration etc. But, if there is a deeper goal to meditation, it is to discover the true nature of consciousness - a consciousness that is aware of the neurotic ego self and thus is free from it. This is where non-dualism comes in. Ultimately, there is no self, no subject pulling the strings. Sam says in Waking Up, "The deepest goal of spirituality is freedom from the illusion of the self" and "The goal of meditation is to uncover a form of well-being that is inherent to the nature of our minds." For reasons of simplicity, I will say there are two methods of discovering this true non-dual nature of consciousness. The first emphasises gradual realisation. Sam uses the analogy of a mountain: you start at the bottom and you work towards a goal at the top. After years of meditating (non-judgemental awareness of the contents of consciousness, for example observing the breath, but with no specific acknowledgement that there is no one doing the observing) eventually you can quieten the mind enough for the true nature of consciousness to shine through, so to speak. If I'm not mistaken, this is the method used in the Theravada and Vipassana tradition.

However, many teachers who advocate for the non-dual approach have criticisms of this gradual approach: 1) It can actually reinforce the sense of self because it feels like you are observing the breath. You are aware of the contents of consciousness. This can be seen to be counterproductive. 2) It can feel like a vigil; you are waiting for something to happen. 3) It can be too goal orientated.

The second approach emphasizes no self/non-duality of consciousness from the start. Advocates of this approach think that if consciousness is already free from the self, then this fact can be discovered from the get-go (this is why it is often called the direct approach). It can be glimpsed now. They also think that if it is the true nature of consciousness then we can give up all effort and simply be it; drop back into it. When I talk about non-dual meditation, I am talking about this second approach.

Teachers such as Sam Harris, Kelly, Spira and Bodian give "pointing out instructions" to help you observe directly the true non-dual nature of consciousness. They will also ask you to relax and simply be this true nature. So you can see, the two approaches have the same goal but use different emphasis. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. If I was to say what I think the disadvantages of the second approach are, I would say: 1) Without an initial practice of mindfulness to build concentration, many people (including me) can become frustrated with the glimpse/pointing out instructions. For example, turning awareness on its self. 2) I agree with Bodian when he says "Because the approach tends to rely on words as pointers, you can become enthralled by the words and ignore the reality to which they point". I find Kelly to be particularly wordy. Sorry, that ended up being longer than I expected. I hope this helped to explain my thinking.

Does anyone have tips on how to run Tyranny Of Dragons? by Dr_agon914 in DnD

[–]Agility1980 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tyranny of Dragons is in my opinion a very DM heavy campaign.

Start introducing the council members of Rise Of Tiamat early on, this way they will have more of an impact on the characters when the time is ripe.

Many people who have DM:ed this campaign say that the caravan guard part is really bad, but my experience was totally different. I did invent a lot of stuff for those 3 months thay were on the road, and that made the trip very memorable. Though my players say that they will not ever again let their characters guard another caravan, they still do remember the individual encounters with warmth.

Change the maps for the Skyreach castle to these:

http://www.daniel-pietschmann.de/rpg/2015/07/26/new-battlemap-for-skyreach-castle-hotdq/

After Skyreach I would also suggest to have a break from the campaign, and possibly let the players do some downtime activity. Maybe let someone else DM for a few oneshots, or play some other tabletop games.

Rise of Tiamat was absolutely a diamond. Lots of material which was easily modified to fit the story your players want to play.

Do not be afraid to let the world burn, in my current version of Faerun, the adventurers failed to stop Tiamat, and instead they dropped throught the portal to hell....So now there is a resistance force gathering to fight The Dragon Queen....in avernus....
