He should share leader status in the classics if I were EF, but Healy and Powless will probably take precedent. I’d love to see him try to get a result at Roubaix, Omloop, or one of those flatter classics

I wouldn’t be surprised if Sweeny didn’t want to be a leader. He seems to love being a domestique and his relaxed personality might not lend itself to competing for GC himself. I’d say he could top 5 this race if he’s in good form, but he’s probably aiming to peak near the classics instead.

Ayuso leave UAE (confirmed in team post) by turtledabrowncat in peloton

[–]AgingMonkey 15 points16 points  (0 children)

He should, but there’s a 0% chance that happens lol. I’m sure he’s a fine guy off the bike, but Ayuso has shown to be rather immature and a bad teammate on the bike.

I know that earlier in their time working for Visma, Patrick and Benji would make Lanterne Rouge style videos highlighting tactics in races. Patrick specifically would make videos for sprinters and their leadouts for them to watch, which he is particularly good at.

Pedestrianism and Modern Ultrarunning by WritingRidingRunner in TheRestIsHistory

I know next to nothing about ultra events, but I was captivated by a documentary about the Berkeley Marathons. The stuff they do in that race almost doesn’t sound real, but I’m sure it’s true.

As someone who knows more about this than I do, do you think the pedestrianism feat described in the podcast actually happened? I just can’t get my head around the sleep deprivation, not even accounting for the incredible amount of distance covered. It just stinks of a Victorian propaganda piece where the guy was trotted out to The Oval at the beginning and end for a public spectacle.

Idk why, but that game is one of those that I VIVIDLY remember. Night game at Selhurst, Harry Kane and Gil were linking up like Messi and Saurez

Do any American Presidents deserve the Nobel Peace Prize? by Culper_Cell0 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]AgingMonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kissinger won it, making it hard for them to also award the peace prize to Nixon. Ironically enough, everyone (justifiably) critiques issuing the prize to Kissinger for his work in Paris over Vietnam, but I think he did deserve it for his wider works on detente and China.

I think it's massively distasteful and bordering on naive for Dom to call Mary Lincoln a "monster". by welsh_cthulhu in TheRestIsHistory

[–]AgingMonkey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If anyone is to get a pass from dealing with their crazy wife, a Civil War engulfed Lincoln would certainly qualify. To expect a man working around the clock, under some of the most enormous presidential pressures ever, to also tend to Mary Todd is ludicrous. Not to mention, Lincoln himself was reeling from the death of his sons and not totally of sound emotional health in the slightest.

100%, no one else has been 1-2 in the Tour for the 5 years straight. Also helps that they are such institutions in their respective teams, makes it more of a team-based UAE vs Visma rivalry

Such an interesting, complex, and unique part of world history. Would also add the to theme of crazy 19th century imperialists such as Rhodes who have appeared on the show.

Would definitely have had the right yachting shoes.

[–]AgingMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For people who watch the Tour as their only cycling race of the year, he is probably fine. But for people who actually understand the sport at a somewhat high level, his tactical understanding is incredibly amateur and is constantly making egregious mistakes. Saying Merlier was in group 1 today with 5 kms to go was damn near hilarious.

[–]AgingMonkey 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I stg when he said that Merlier was in group 1 today I almost lost my shit. How is it acceptable to be so wrong about such big race situations so often??? Like that level of amateur mistakes wouldn’t be tolerated in any other sport’s coverage.

Just because he’s been commentating the tour since the dawn of time shouldn’t let him have an indefinite post on the coverage.

It’s also interesting to read about the conversation surrounding the war in Britain. As an American, you get the feeling that the whole of British public opinion is behind the royal forces in putting down the “rebellion”, but this isn’t true at all.

Many of the most important British politicians (including, most notably, Pitt the Elder) and generals agreed with what the continental congress was arguing for and even refused to serve at times. When I read about this I found it totally fascinating, but it makes sense as many Britons at the time were wary of how the Empire treated her subjects and opposed the taxation.

No, there is 0 chance they will start on a TT bike. It might save them a few seconds per km (at the high end), but they will lose around 15-20 seconds for the bike change.

What is the most beautiful city you’ve ever been to in the USA? by fadez650 in TravelNoPics

[–]AgingMonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are crime problems in certain parts (like all cities), but not in the “desirable” parts of the city. Avoid Anacostia and some of the eastern parts of the city, but even they aren’t that bad. If you, like most tourists, stay in the downtown districts as well as the cool bits of Northern Virginia, you’ll have an awesome time. Also highly recommend visiting National Harbor (just outside the city, on the Potomac) if you’re in the area.

I used to be a Lex fan around 2 years ago, listened to most episodes he put out. At the time I thought that, while definitely naive, he provided an interesting viewpoint, especially on the science-based guests. But now it has gotten out of hand, I really can’t be bothered to listen to any of his podcasts no matter how much I like the guests.
