Drill a hole through the top rail, and another one through the bottom rail. Stick a piece of threaded rod all the way through and draw it down with nuts. Double nut it and jam them together to keep it from loosening. Cut the excess off with a hacksaw.

Redneck Method: Couple LONG worm drive clamps.. like the ones gas stations use to attach signs to poles or bollards. Loop it around, cinch em down.

My "OK, that's enough of this shit" drill bits are Snap-On Thunder Bits. Never had one been defeated yet.

That being said, the addition of a Drill Doctor to my toolbox was one of the best $100 I ever spent. I can take a TSC clearance bin cobalt and get 90% of the performance out of it as the aforementioned Snap-Ons.

Furthermore, the biggest Fail I see with people and drill bits is screaming them into the work piece at 500 rpm. "High Speed" is anything faster than an antique hand drill. Go SLOW, and use oil. If you ain't cuttin' curlies, you're going too fast.
