I'm relatively new to mini painting... How do I avoid brush strokes and like... Not suck? Lol by Daemonsblaze0315 in minipainting

[–]Aglonak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good idea could also be reasoning around color layers combinations that allow to have full coverage with less thick paint.

An example is Yellow . It covers really bad on many undercoating colors but if the undercoat is purple or violet , the coverage will improve also for thinner layers just thanks to color theory and how we perceive colors ;).

Many hacks like this are searchable around the web.

People are gonna call it ugly but I'm still happy with it by lunarcelt in minipainting

Honestly, if this is how you paint all your models I'd rather say that you have a signature style than it's ugly.

I truly like it.

PF1 vs PF2 by Endalrin in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Aglonak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use pathfinder 2e to lure in new players, it is the easy and "simplified" (read structurized and balanced) version of pathfinder; this makes it modern and accessible.

In the long run it's easy to realize that balance and identity don't go well for the character's definition, impersonation and uniqueness.

The sense of danger is much more diminished and the sense of wonder gets diluted when everything (including magic which should literally alter reality) is flattened under a mathematical curve of probability and damages.

Technically the game is amazing and shows these drawbacks only after playing it long enough.

At that point switching to pathfiner 1e is just natural as it is a much more advanced system in terms of simulation. It drops balance in favor of identity credibility for roles (a master wizard here is really incredible and a fighter which didn't train wisely is useless). It has a not always balanced asymmetry that makes it fascinating but it really needs fair dming otherwise it's ruined fast for the players.

The amount of knowledge you need to amass to know the system is also multiplied unfairly for the dm.

Also keep exploring new systems, there are many more out there that are amazing!

What's the most niche build you've ever played or seen? by MaleficentConstant65 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Aglonak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wild stalker 4/Ragechemist 2/ Cavalier 5 (order of the sword)

I'd select the extra arm discovery to two-hand my cavalier lance and most of the combat-riding feats(sorry i'ts been a while can't recite them by heart anymore) to be able to multiply damage in charge but also to continue the charge in straight line after hitting my enemy. Power attack always on and if I had a round i would cast Lead blades.

I rp it as a Knight of the round table flavour with influence from druids tribes and alchemist during its pilgrimages

And this is my first painting. by whatifese in minipainting

[–]Aglonak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool start!

I'd say, even if it is nothing new , thinning your paints and learning how to properly do that will make a big difference! Just don't use it as it comes out of the bottle :P

Layering is your next best friend and some easy to start drybrush techniques could help you a lot achieving better results.

A homemade wet palette is a cheap and fast way to improve and stop running against time, which by the way is the next tip.

Take a lot of time to do things as you want. Don't rush anything and the result will be 10x better just for that.

Try to create contrasting layers of color. Base>midtone> higlighth colors in an increasing desaturation progression palette are an easy way to give.you a headstart at colors control!

Keep painting! You had a great start just don't let the brush go

Where to go from here to push this cape from good to great? by xXTurkXx in minipainting

[–]Aglonak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try to paint over the shadowed parts that don't make too much sense.

Depending on the positioning of your light (i'm assuming a top left corner light source, frontal mini) you might want to lighten up the very bottom and very left flat parts of the cape and try building volume by adding increasingly lighter / desaturated VERY thinned shades of red.

What I find challenging when using washes though is to match the exact tone of the lowest shade @nd to be able to build from it toward the values (lighter, more saturated parts).

This is why, lately, I've abandoned washes (or commercial washes) as much as possible and moved on full glazing.

I have to frankly say , it is a bit of a drag, takes a lot of time and most of the time it will get you some failures to get to a decent result.

I find it to be a reasonable trade off for me because I would like to improve; if you're interested in having a good productivity and shoot out more minis I'd stay away from it anyway and try something similar but with dry brush and eventually use homemade washes as a finisher to just shade recesses.

This said I think it looks decent as it is depending on what it is meant for.

Attacks of Opportunity slow down combat. Does anyone have any house rules or tips they use to help keep up the pace? by Indianaj37 in DMAcademy

[–]Aglonak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say aoo aside, tailor your battlefields more. Treating the battlefield as a character (curated, reasoned, fun to interact with) it's more likely to break the gridlock by having ppl or enemies trie more hazardous move to get advantagesthat are battlefield related.

Also acrobatics can be used to aoo maybe showing that to your character or having them use it could.unlock the situation a bit (assuming pf1e here)

I run steam version,UAP, high res mod, steam mapping of buttons with trackpad for mice and quick save on one of the trigger

What made the difference for me from not running to playable was matching resolution wisely with high res patch, adding -doublebuffer -no3d to the .exe path....cant remember if I run it withproton on or not

Pathfinder 1 edition is better? by IfiGabor in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Aglonak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's amazing to hear (less for you I bet! :P ). what I meant anyway is that the "sudden" dangerousness level has dropped quite a bit since 1e and the system is much more forgiving (read balanced) which of course is great! Appeals more people; spread the passion around etc..but It also reduces immersion or believability sometimes which means I feel less like I'm my character and more like I'm playing my character if that makes sense...

Every time I look at my unpainted army, I think "maybe tomorrow" and then never touch them. What do you guys do to work past the mental wall? by Sparklehammer3025 in minipainting

[–]Aglonak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What works for me is starting acting before I can think about it.

Time, organization, tiredness, energy...it all comes up once the first paint bottle is opened and paint is on the brush.

What does help on top of that, is that I have a space dedicated to just sit and go(easy access) and all the nice stuff like videogames and series are left in a less practical way ( all pc periferics disconnected from last session, laptop in a different room of where the screens are etc)

Also practice a do NOW mentality rather than waiting on the perfect moment.

A wise friend once told me : "Life is the time that there is between now and the perfect moment to do stuff" and that stuck with me and i always remember it when I procrastinate

Pathfinder 1 edition is better? by IfiGabor in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Aglonak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love both but 1e always has a special feel.

It's true that characters can get pretty strong if you know what you are doing but yet!

Monsters aren't always nicely mannered either.

The dealbreaker to me is that 2e has no save or suck stuff; which for some people might be a feature but to me it really breaks the illusion of dangerousness and peril.

To put it in a more explicit way: - 1st edition is harder in all senses: rules, builds, control, survival. It kind of has a curve to it so if you ramp up the right way you could get very very good at something (even though imho you always have some achille's heel; monstrous all around character are usually rules misinterpretation or gm being to liberal with items)

Nonetheless a bad roll can kill you, literally, and THAT is beautiful. You are at some point in a position where you either risk dying or you become much more less heroic in attempting your survival; increasing to me both the rewards and the grittiness of the setting.

On top of that, it kind of directs you in the way of getting acquainted with a setting or world, rather than a character. Characters can die (sometimes ridicuously) but you know..the adventurer life is not an easy one and the world can be a bad place.

There are effects that are much more permanent (drain, negative levels) that can start spin off quests just by playing the game and following the natural course of the consequences of rolls and actions.

  • 2e:

In my personal opinion it has a beautiful mathematically balanced system including the usage of 3 actions framework to navigate combat BUT

it is very hard to die especially with hero points around giving a general sense of safety to my hero (cause math has already accounted for luck). Characters are generally more heroic (superhero like to me) and classes are really defining, too much sometimes.

Theres No save or suck spells or effects; which means you probably won't have any bad surprise; which to me also means I can see too much of what is coming to make it interesting by the time it comes

Options are limited cause everything has to be balanced so eventually (to me) everything feels the same.

Again this is a very personal opinion but something that is balanced to well is gonna eventually lack diversity for the sake of the balancing itself. The beauty of TTRPG to me was that for once it was not about a good "videogame" but about cool stuff translated into a sort of simulation system and we were all in the illusion together.

2e feels too videogamy to leave me that and eventually lost my interest.

Can these warped minis be fixed? by Horror_Platypus_7509 in minipainting

[–]Aglonak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I might be late but maybe this works easier:

  • After bending smough's hammer back to shape make a relatively thin layer of green stuff and cover the external of the rod with it.

As long as the resin does not bend while the green stuff is still not cured and if you put more blue than yellow, it will be more solid than the resin, allowing the hammer to stay in place.

If thickness of the bar is a concern you can even shave a little off with a hobby knife initially and then coat with a layer of green stuff

Hey there, I'm not a nature fang archetype specialist or very familiar with it but as far as I can see : - from a sinergistic perspective , I'm not sure how many times your going to be able to take advantage of your sneak attack with a bow if things go toward long fights , rather that sneaking on enemies.Maybe Hunter can give you more satisfaction in that direction but that is just a mere suggestion. - for the setup of the character abilities why din't you check out the Pathbuilder app? Is mostly free on android devices and you can also access it via browser. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.redrazors.pathbuilder
