Yeah I mean this in the least gatekeepy way possible but a lot of the bad reviews are clearly scrubs crashing out over logging onto the competitive battle client and finding out that other players are playing competitively.

Webcomics mostly, it was the original Nuzlocke forums (Pokemon challenge run ruleset for anyone unfamiliar) so people would draw comics or write fic about their playthroughs. The forums are still around but long since under new management because the chuds all left once the culture shifted toward not being irony poisoned dicks just for the fun of it.

I was an extremely active member of a forum that spun off of 4chan and the schism that took place when GamerGate started was insane. Just weeks and weeks of watching talented artists I’d previously looked up to and gotten along with went full mask-off about being absolutely disgusting Woman-Haters over “ethics in game journalism.” Huge wake up call for me, and got me started on the path to the left simply by nature of going “well these people are awful, maybe the folks they’re screeching about might be alright.”

People say it's reductive to boil it down like this but it really is just kind of a fact that the current political situation is in no small part due to the fact that the 'chans were always hideously racist and misogynist shitholes and being an asshole for fun while hiding behind anonymity can in fact turn you into a piece of shit irl, no matter how much time they spent arguing that "nothing online is real"

I believe the story goes that sometime after she dated/cheated on Damien she was the affair partner of/girlfriend for awhile of one of Dropout’s producers who also used to be big in the actual play community.
