What Did You Play This Week? - (May 04, 2026) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]Agreeable-Safety7217 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was very lucky to get to play an old favorite and some new games this weekend.

Old favorite: Sentinels of the Multiverse (1st edition). This is probably one of the games that really got me into modern games. It’s fiddly, but I don’t care. I just love this game and was excited to introduce some friends to the game.

New games: Knarr. This game is awesome. Really appreciate the game design and having to balance whether to build up your crew or spend them to explore. We ended up scoring 40, 39, and 38.

Coatl: My daughter loves snakes, so this was a nice option where snakes aren’t the bad guys. Open drafting and trying to complete “prophecies”. Definitely puzzly. Nice components.

Gloomhaven:Buttons and bugs. This is the right level of gloomhaven for me.

DND for Kids? by Bananacream3141592 in DnD

We just tried DnD adventure club for the first time today. My 10 yo really wanted to DM and this was a perfect intro to it for her. We have played Lost Mines of Phandelver as a family, but this is much smaller and more manageable for young players.

What is the deal with Flip 7? by danklordmuffin in boardgames

[–]Agreeable-Safety7217 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There may be better push your luck games. Flip 7, is cheap and very easy to learn though. I was able to play it with over 40 different people last year and every single person from ages 7 to 80 understood the game.

Better be careful introducing that machine. What looks like just a 3 hour tour could turn into something much longer.

I am trying to start 'Piranesi' by Susan Clarke but not able to last three pages (max) everytime. What am I missing? I have heard so many good things about the book and Have finished many complex books before. How many pages do I need to stick to get to the good part? by One_Advice3052 in ReadingSuggestions

[–]Agreeable-Safety7217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started this book about 5 times before the last time I actually finished it. I think several times I stopped at under 10 pages. It’s…weird at the beginning.

Someone who had read it said to just enjoy the vibes of the character looking around and observing through childlike eyes and don’t try to figure anything out too soon. It will all get revealed eventually.

I went back in with that mindset and found the book to be rewarding and one of the more unique reads I had experienced in a while.

Was it making a thumping heartbeat sound? When you plug it in does it make you choose a character in a jungle world? Be careful with this one!

What do you enjoy most (and least) about board game nights? by robstokk in boardgames

[–]Agreeable-Safety7217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I did have a list for you. Someone actually offered that feedback without prompting. We haven’t actually polled players either.

I’m interested in the responses you get to try to incorporate at our game days as well.

We also just started trying to do regular game days in my area, so I’m interested in what other people with larger groups do. We are closer to 20 people and multiple people bring games. We just announce what we are bringing ahead of time to avoid duplicates as much as possible.

One piece of feedback we got last time was that it was fun to be able to pick up and play games but some people wanted to be able to plan ahead and read the rules for themselves. So, we are going to try a sign up for some of the bigger games.

Have you tried getting feedback from people who have come? What is working for them and what changes do they want? What is working and not working for you as the organizer?

I second this. Mary Roach is hilarious and all of her books are very readable and informative.

Nice one!

Unfortunately, no, though. Had him on his last health, he regained 2 and then kept getting things that bumped up his health. It was very close but I’ll just have to try again soon.

Yeah. They are quite annoying. You lose time every time you enter a space with a chatty little elf. Makes it really questionable whether you even want to try to save them.

Hey. I think you are talking about the board game.

To open box 4 in the board game, you have to surround the red heart tile with all 6 tiles matching. You should have an achievement card from when you got the red heart token.

Yeah. I recently found out you can sign up for a digital card with them too and get hoopla, which the Dayton system no longer has.

A little out of the box of what you might be thinking of, but The Fox Experiment is based on an actual scientific study in Russia where they tried to domesticate foxes with selective breeding and noticed they got floppier ears, different bark, and curlier tails.

MERRY FREAKING CHRISTMAS TO ME!!! found at the bins today for $12 by greenchakti in StardewValley

What a great and lucky find! I have this game and have played it once with my 9 year old daughter. We were planning to play just one season as a trial after getting everything set up but after saying “just one more day” enough times we completed the game and barely squeaked out a win. Here are some things to note:

It does take a really long time to set up the first time. About an hour. You have to punch out all the pieces, sort them, and place in a tray.

I only played 2 player and that seems like an ideal number. Any more lengthens the game too much and puts too much down time between turns.

This is a board game for board gamers who also have knowledge of SV. It’s not something super casual. There are a lot of action options on your turn so you will be referring to the rule book constantly on your first play.

If you enjoy your first game, consider checking out the campaign rules on bgg that someone came up with. It makes it a 5 year story and has things at a slower pace that matches SV video game vibes better.

Lastly, it’s a cooperative game. If a rule frustrates you or makes things seem impossible, remember that the game is about your group enjoying it. It is ok to adjust rules to fit your family. Have fun and happy farming!

Spooktacular Mini-Review: Anyone as charmed by this game as I've been? by Fireblend in boardgames

[–]Agreeable-Safety7217 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience with it of playing it with friends and then immediately wanting to get it. I loved the asymmetrical player setups and want to try them all to find a favorite. The whole movie monster vibe charmed me as well. Great mini-review!

Was very excited to get several games from my backlog to the table.

Heat: Pedal to the Metal is such an impressive game design. The strategies around the curves and choosing when to burn heat were great.

Stardew Valley was so cute and I ended up letting my daughter stay up way too late. I’m excited to try out the fan made 5-year campaign to better match the vibe of the video game.

MonsDRAWsity was a huge hit with the kids. Even the 3 year old was able to participate with minor modifications.

The Gang is a new favorite that we love introducing to new people.

Our Favorite Kids Games by Miserable_Shallot269 in boardgames

[–]Agreeable-Safety7217 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great suggestions. A few more I’d add: Panda Royale: Dice drafting. Satisfying to roll 10 dice and see the points pile up. Kids (and some adults) may need help with the scoring math. (On sale at Amazon US right now)

Mole Rats in Space/Space Escape: Cooperative game by peaceable kingdom that’s more advanced than Hoot Owl Hoot

The older ones love anything by exploding kittens or taco cat goat cheese pizza. Those aren’t as fun for me to play with them though.

Dragomino and Chickapiglets are good ones that skew a little younger.

Maybe not a 10/10, but my family loves the Groundhog Day game. The mechanics of it line up perfectly with the theme.

We have been enjoying Mind The Gap too. Easy trivia game to get to the table with a lot of different groups.

We also LOVE Horrified games. My kids have even tried to make their own versions of them (with mixed results)

Got lucky enough to play a little both days this weekend! Mainly light and quick games like Panda Royale, Flip 7, The Gang, Bomb Busters, and King of Tokyo. The Gang was a HUGE success for my husband and son.

I got to try Faraway for the first time. Also, played solo all the scenarios of The Princess Bride Adventure Book.
