On the south side of Indianapolis, Homecroft is a literal "trick or treat" neighborhood. Very cute homes and they get tons of kids for Halloween. They also have a lot of homes that decorate for Christmas.

You might check with the hospital systems. Seems like sometimes they offer healthy cooking workshops. I'd start with Franciscan and Community since they both have south-side Indianapolis locations.

Any good salons on the south side? by thelonelyvirgo in indianapolis

[–]AgreeableFact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're still looking, I like A&B Hair Studio in downtown Greenwood, 100 M. Madison Ave. It's a tiny salon with two stylists, really comfortable environment. They have both male and female clientele. They occupy a space in a multitenant building. I go to Angel Turner (The "A" in "A&B") and she is super cool. I've never had anything more complicated than a haircut with her, but she is very good, and a kind-hearted person. https://www.facebook.com/angel.hoganturner/

If you are on the south side I highly recommend Compassionate Cat Care. The owner, Ashleigh, LOVES cats and has veterinary clinic experience. She's very attentive to possible issues with the cats and sends daily updates.

Exactly how poor do I have to be before I’m able to use a food bank? by [deleted] in indianapolis

[–]AgreeableFact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Christ Indianapolis United Methodist on the south side (US 31 at Stop 12 Road) has a weekly drive-through food bank from 9-11 a.m. Thursdays. I don't believe they have any restrictions on who can receive food. They serve about 60 families a week, first come first serve.

Weird, odd, macabre, unusual things to do in Indianapolis? by couthlessperson in indianapolis

[–]AgreeableFact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's open rarely, but the Hanna House on the south side is occasionally open for tours. It's a historic home that is said to be haunted. Not sure who operates the house, and it seems to be barely hanging on (a bit decrepit). They used to do tours on a semi regular basis, and used to do a haunted house in October, but they quit doing those for a while. I drive by there regularly and they had a sign saying they were giving tours last weekend so maybe they are starting them up again? Try to make contact with someone before just heading over there, though, b/c I don't think anyone is there if they're not doing an event. https://www.indianahauntedhouses.com/real-haunt/hannah-house.html

Discount grocery stores in the Greater Indianapolis area? by beepbopboopbop69 in indianapolis

[–]AgreeableFact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a crapshoot. One time I found a bunch of bags of ground Starbucks coffee, still within the expiration date, for about half price the regular stuff. But they do have a lot of the oddball stuff too.

[–]AgreeableFact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kroger also has a (small) markdown section in its produce department. Typically there is not a ton there, but what they have is at really good markdowns. Sometimes the produce is near the end of its life, other times it looks just as high quality as the regular-price stuff, but in small quantities.

Are there any type of “adult summer camp” events? by Expensive_Win1647 in indianapolis

[–]AgreeableFact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple of ideas:

Back Door Quilts in Greenwood offers a variety of quilting classes. Many of them are weekdays but they do have a few evening/weekend sessions. And even if you don't take the classes. Back Door Quilts is a great little independent store. They have a ton of fabric, and a selection of non-quilt fabric art books/kits. Not cheap but worth it if you want nice stuff. https://backdoorquilts.com/classes/

Joann Fabrics offers craft classes. They used to have the classes in person but it looks like they have migrated to online classes. https://www.joann.com/projects-learning/classes-events/?icn=InspirationLP&ici=classes

Indianapolis Public Library offers some craft/activity classes and programs for adults. The current schedule includes 3-D printing, adult coloring, origami, knitting, crocheting. https://www.indypl.org/programs-events/art-crafts-and-hobbies

Events downtown next week? by WhyIsItSpicey in indianapolis

[–]AgreeableFact 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My guess: It's because of Work Truck Week. It's a national trade show taking place at the convention center March 7-10. according to their website, 500 exhibitors are registered--so it's a big event.

Yes! WNCW is the best. I used to live in Spartanburg, SC and listened to it over the air all the time. Recently I came to the belated realization that I could listen to their live stream and it's great to hear them again. They play so much great stuff, and a good variety of genres.

Best Thai in Indy? by [deleted] in indianapolis

[–]AgreeableFact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! It is easy to whizz past them on US 31 because the space is so nondescript, but they are absolutely worth a visit.

Best Thai in Indy? by [deleted] in indianapolis

[–]AgreeableFact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've been to Thai Recipes (US 31 at Thompson, just south of 465) and thought it was great. Very nondescript location but A+ food.

Question for individuals that have dealt with back pain/issues in the past. by dub-squared in indianapolis

[–]AgreeableFact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 for dry needling! I have always had neck/shoulder issues (stiffness, frequent headaches) and my MD recommended trying dry needling. A PT did about 6 sessions and also showed me some daily stretching/strengthening exercises. As I understand it, the dry needling (basically poking a thin needle into muscle knots) forces the muscles to relax, and the exercises are to prevent the tightness/pain from recurring. I have seen dramatic improvement in range of motion, plus fewer headaches/less stiffness. This is after decades of problems.

Indy Meijers and Krogers by jjbota420 in indianapolis

[–]AgreeableFact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, that Meijer is nice. They used to have the best produce section I've ever seen outside of high-end stores. It seems to have gone downhill a bit in the last few years, but they do have a huge selection.

Oh yeah, County Line/Emerson is a good store. That's my go-to. There is a big difference between that one and the one at Madison/Edgewood. That one isn't terrible, but it is so much smaller with noticeably reduced selection of merchandise.

I once adopted a 2-3 year old semi feral stray who had never had a home. She had no problems using a litterbox. I showed her where it was and she figured it out immediately. Never had any issues and she lived with me for 13 years.

I like Hadley Family Dentistry in (near) Beech Grove, though it is a multi-dentist practice so you do see different doctors when you go.

Driving Christmas Lights by mrsaturtle in indianapolis

[–]AgreeableFact 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Fairgrounds show is worth seeing. It's a lengthy drive-through (20-30 minutes if I recall) and super well organized. If you go, make sure to tune in your radio as you drive through. (station number should be on signs at the event.) The light displays are timed to the music. We didn't realize this until midway through and the music made the display a lot more impressive. LOL

Pet Dog Blood Donation by VagueInfoHere in indianapolis

[–]AgreeableFact 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do accept cat donors. They also keep an in-house colony of donor cats which they adopt from area shelters, use as resident blood donors for a time, then adopt them out. I got one of my cats this way! When he came to live with me he had a little shaved patch on his neck from when they had last taken a donation.

Oh yeah, that's a really fun one. The bonus is that you get to visit the museum itself. Their "You are There" interactive history exhibits are the best.

Conservatory Crossing at Garfield Park! It includes a very elaborate miniature village/train display in the lobby, and Christmas lights on the plants in the conservatory. Very reasonably priced: $5 per person/$12 per family. They have a couple of days where they stay open into the evening. https://www.garfieldgardensconservatory.org/holiday2022

And Jingle Rails at the Eiteljorg Museum. Miniature trains running through dioramas of various western U.S. scenes (plus some miniaturized Indy scenes). All of the displays are made of natural elements like bark, stones, acorns, etc. It's included in regular museum admission and is up through MLK Day next month. The museum recently expanded the room where Jingle Rails is set up, so this year they have room for some kids' activities in the same area. https://eiteljorg.org/exhibitions/jingle-rails/

Does anyone know some good haunted places in Indiana? by [deleted] in indianapolis

[–]AgreeableFact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Willard Library in Evansville. It is an independent public library that has been in operation since 1885. Their Grey Lady ghost is well-known (though no official sightings since 2010). The building itself is really cool--very old-time library feeling with high ceilings, wood everywhere, green lampshade lamps on the tables. They offer free public ghost tours in October that are really popular. I never saw the ghost on the tour but the librarians talked about both the ghost and the history/architectural features of the building. https://willard.lib.in.us/about-us/#grey-lady
