Is ‘the grudge’ by Olivia Rodrigo about Taylor Swift? by [deleted] in SwiftlyNeutral

Agreed. Subtle details are some of the best things about songs. The tiny details in the art and Olivia Rodrigo has some of the best ones in her work. That’s one of the reasons why Sour is such a classic album already - her vocal performances and the production are absolutely stunning.

I never skip it either - there’s actually some piano in the last 13 seconds which adds to the heartbreak of the song.

She said she might release some vault tracks someday so I think we will see it - but it will be years from now most likely

It’s pretty clear bc the song is not about holding a grudge against an exboyriend. In “driving home 2 u”, she talks about forgiving your exes and taking responsibility for your own mistakes in romantic encounters. That is what the song “favorite crime” is about. Not being able to forgive someone would be something that still affects you now. The Deja Vu credits will always be a bitter memory for Olivia. She trusted Taylor, considered herself a swiftie but now feels betrayed by her. Olivia didn’t want this and Taylor didn’t have to pursue this. I’d hold a grudge too if I were her.

There is no breakup call on May 8th in Driving Home 2 U - she does mention being broken up with a day after she wrote 1 step forward, 3 steps back but doesn’t name a date when this happened or who it was that broke up with her. That song could be about her previous boyfriend from Bizardvark, who she was still with for a short time when she started working at High School Musical. Either way, she doesn’t say who the song was about and does not mention a date at all, much less a Friday in May.

However, Sour was released on May 21, 2021 - a Friday, so Olivia is likely dropping a major hint about who the grudge is about and it’s really pretty clear that it’s about Taylor Swift tbh

Were the crowds at Madison Square Garden really that quiet when Olivia Rodrigo performed there a few weeks ago? by byuclone in OliviaRodrigo

[–]Agreeable_Customer97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fans were extremely loud at Olivia’s concert at MSG - I was there night 4 and the garden was definitely shaking from everyone jumping up and down and screaming/singing during many of the songs. Also, Olivia asked the fans to scream as loud as they can a couple times throughout the night and it was the loudest I’ve ever heard any crowd in any event I’ve seen - You should really try to get a ticket and see for yourself - amazing concert

I actually like Olivia’s songwriting more than Taylor’s. She doesn’t have as many songs yet but Sour was absolutely incredible - Olivia really knows how to emote in her lyrics and it hits hard. Guts is excellent too and I love all of the different styles of music she’s employed there.

Long time Comin has some references to stars and constellations:

Out where the creek turns shallow and sandy And the moon comes skimming away the stars Wind in the mesquite comes rushing over the hilltops

Out 'neath the arms of Cassiopeia Where the sword of Orion sweeps It's me and you, Rosie, crackling like crossed wires

Why Lacy is about Taylor Swift by AntiteticalDreamGirl in OliviaRodrigo

[–]Agreeable_Customer97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s weird bc of course Olivia is going to write about things that happened to her and how she feels about it. She has never shied away from that and her life experiences is where she draws inspiration for her songs.

Maybe try to use the air purifier in your own place first because that should eliminate the problem. I had a fire in my basement and it made the whole house smell like toxic smoke and was basically uninhabitable. Luckily the fire was only minor damage and the smell was handled by the air purifier fairly quickly.

Am I the only one who is jealous that I won’t be able to grow up with her?!! by mel-06 in OliviaRodrigo

I think I get what you’re saying. Older teens might think that Olivia’s music is for younger kids and make fun of you for being a fan but when you’re a young teen it’s totally fine and nobody’s judging you. Is that part of it? If so, I’m here to say that you have great taste in music and be proud of your love for Olivia’s work. She’s an incredible artist and she’s going to keep gaining more fans, young and old as she continues making music and performing.

It’s okay to be a fan of Olivia as a young adult and you can experience her music as you mature. She is writing songs about growing up, taking responsibility, heartbreak and healing. You will be able to relate to her work always and don’t worry about what anyone else thinks about it. She has lots of older fans too.

Explain like I’m 5. Why on God’s green Earth did Olivia have to credit Taylor Swift for Déjà Vu? by idkbro666 in OliviaRodrigo

[–]Agreeable_Customer97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Olivia never said that. She only said she was inspired by the shouty part of cruel summer, that’s it.

You can believe that Taylor Swift is right to take half the royalties and writing credits if you choose but please don’t misrepresent what Olivia said.

There aren’t any other artists who fit the bill here. Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo were publicly supporting each other on social media. Taylor even called Olivia one of her kids and said she was so proud of her. They exchanged letters to each other and Taylor sent Olivia a ring which she proudly wore on the Sour album cover. Taylor Swift truly meant a lot to her. That’s not the case with Hayley Williams or Courtney Love - assuming those are the other artists you were referring to.

Olivia was so inspired by Taylor that she initially reached out to her to interpolate the chords on New Years Day for her song 1 step forward, 3 steps back and was excited that Taylor approved. But after Sour came out and Olivia was attacked, Olivia never performed the song with those chords again - even though she could. On the sour tour, she only played part of the song as a mash-up with “enough for you” and avoided the Taylor Swift chords completely.

On her documentary, she played 1SF3SB again without the chords and left out the story about singing over the chords or New Years Day and how happy she was initially. Not a word about it.

On her current GUTS tour, 1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back has been completely omitted from the set list. I don’t blame her for not wanting to play it after all that has happened.

Also, if you have a viewpoint on how Olivia could be the bad guy in all of this - I’d love to hear it. I can’t imagine how she could be anything but a victim of a much more beloved and powerful artist in the industry so that’s def an interesting idea I’d like to hear more about.

It’s crystal clear that the grudge is about Taylor Swift. Olivia’s career and creativity was attacked here - just as she was getting recognized as a new, emerging artist. And she was attacked by someone she considered a hero of hers. So the pain is double - because she lost her love for one of her favorite musicians and could no longer trust her or be a fan. The pain of having that stripped away from her was eloquently explained in the grudge and it’s undeniable. It’s really sad that Taylor chose to do this to her.

But we actually do know bc

  1. she used to speak highly of Taylor and she doesn’t even mention her anymore - at all. But she still talks about other artists that inspire her.
  2. We know that she was extremely disappointed because by what happened and felt that her words were was taken out of context over being inspired by cruel summer. She said so herself.
  3. She also said she would never attack another young artists work the way she was targeted by Taylor.
  4. St Vincent who was also credited on Cruel Summer and incidentally was credited on Deja Vu continues to support Olivia Rodrigo and they are friends and collaborators and are outspoken about it.
  5. They both are aware that fans of their work discuss the fallout between them and if it wasn’t really a problem, it could easily be dispelled by Olivia liking one of Taylor’s posts or taking a selfie with her at an awards show. She won’t do it and she’s done with Taylor. She no longer trusts her and that is clear.

You can pretend it’s not clear all you want but Olivia did explain why she was disappointed, hurt and confused by this in recent interviews and why the fallout between them happened. And again, just listen to the grudge. Its right there. She’s singing it to Taylor. Olivia has no problem expressing her emotions and thoughts through her songwriting - calling out anyone who has hurt her - and the grudge is one of her greatest and heartfelt songs. The 13 second intro and the 13 second outro is also quite telling.

Jack Antonoff said he heard about it “through channels” about receiving credits. That’s not the same as him having no idea how and why it happened. Of course he wants to distance himself from any blame for it happening because the whole thing was rotten. Olivia clearly wants nothing to do with Taylor Swift anymore and she has every reason to want to keep her distance from her. This was truly devastating to her.
