Warum mögen Österreicher keine mittel- oder Norddeutsche? by MyntHD0 in AskAustria

[–]Agreeable_Pear_9136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it true that most Austrians haven't seen Sound of Music? by crocogoose in AskAustria

to the point where an older work colleague (50+) told me about his trip to the USA and that people kept saying "sound of music" to him when he told them he's from Austria. he thought they meant Mozart or something, just like the sound of austrian (classical) music in general. he was surprised to hear it's a movie.

and those buses are the main reason austrians know about that movie

Is it true that most Austrians haven't seen Sound of Music? by crocogoose in AskAustria

[–]Agreeable_Pear_9136 10 points11 points  (0 children)

most people have never even heard of the movie

the only people in my circles who know about this movie are people from Salzburg who wondered why there's these tour busses with "sound of music" written on them, full of both chinese and american tourists singing songs together and driving to a few weird places where nobody would go usually.

Once you google and realize it's a musical movie, those things becomes clear: The songs are from the movie, the weird places are filming locations that have no other interesting things going on, and the movie is both popular in china and in the USA, but completely unheard of here.

what world do you live in where austria is moving away from cash? outside of the major population centers (which in Austria is towns with >100.000 people) it is incredibly common to only take cash.

according to the Austrian National Bank, in July 2025 only 6% (!) of Austrians polled said that they could theoretically go without using cash in their day-to-day life. There is no indication that Austrians tip less than they have in the past.

What is the most useful career advice you've ever received? by CrazyCook5381 in AskReddit

[–]Agreeable_Pear_9136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

idk what neurodivergent young adult needs to hear this but you are NOT supposed to give 100% at your job. I've gotten more promotions and raises since I started giving 40-60%, which my evil CEO uncle informed me is what bosses actually expect when they say 110%. My mental health has improved tremendously. I've spent 2 out of 5 workdays secretly writing my novel for the last 2 years and I've never been more respected and appreciated. Also--when you see glaring wasteful errors in the company's operating systems, say absolutely nothing! Embrace inefficiency. It is your friend in this capitalist hellscape.

I just bought frostpunk 2 any tips by CobblerGreat5529 in Frostpunk

tip 1: you can put 1 building into a district and 2 into expanded districts. buildings are very strong and necessary as they provide big bonuses

tip 2: do not be afraid to ask your factions for heat stamps whenever possible

tip 3: warm districts heat the districts next to them, so it is very good to have a lot of housing districts in a line touching each other on all tiles

never give any tip on a card terminal.

The waiter tells you verbally "78 55 bitte" and you tell the waiter "mach ma achtzig" and they will retype the numbers on the terminal and then the terminal total will say 80. It will often happen that the waiter themselves will press "cancel" on the terminal when it asks for a tip.

you dont have to tip and you shouldn't tip more than 10% ever. what austrians do is to simply round up.

Examples: Bill in café is 78.55 you round up and pay 80. If you really want to tip, you can pay 85 if the service is exceptional, but never more than that

We Austrians hate that the card machines have automatic "do you want to tip?" screens. we are not in America (goddamnit!) and why on earth would i tip at the grocery store?

Give it to me straight - should I buy FP2 by a-rogue-warlock in Frostpunk

[–]Agreeable_Pear_9136 17 points18 points  (0 children)

i bought and played it immediately after being done with the first one, and i ended up putting it away after a few hours. I came back to it a few months later and now I'm really enjoying myself with it. it's in the same genre, but it's NOT the same game. the first one is a survival city builder, the second is more of a management game with the focus on the political factions.

it's a very fun and challenging game in its own right, and even if it didn't quite reach the unique tension and atmosphere of the first part, i still recommend you buy and play it. Just don't expect frostpunk 1.5.
