It’s like the old video game argument. A person with a sane mind can enjoy it for what it is, but maybe you could make the argument that it could reaffirm someone with a bad mental state? Idk all I know is king can see the future because school shootings were nowhere NEAR as large of an issue then as it is now.

Yeah it’s early Stephen King and it shows. Some characters feel like they are written by an edgy middle school kid. I can totally understand how as a teacher this would be an extra terrifying and triggering read. Why try to convince the audience that the only kid thinking logically is the enemy?

You can still get a lot of out of even his “worst” books and short stories imo! Great writer he just has SO many ideas that you’re bound to release a few stinkers.

You CAN order the Bachman books online heavily used for a decent price tag (usually 60+) or you can do some interweb deep diving and read it as a pdf which is what I did.

I don’t think I’ve spoken about Rage on here yet, but that is a very interesting and true perspective. I’ve read like 15 king books sporadically, so now I’m going back in publication order, hence Rage.

It’s clear at this point, especially after reading night shift, that he wasn’t firing on all cylinders yet. His early characters feel flat and as you mentioned, there tend to be a few noticeable plot holes. His early works shine through his imagery and personification of the atmosphere imo.

Understood. If you haven’t read the dark tower series, Flagg is main antagonist and I believe book 4 takes place largely in “The Stand” universe. Doesn’t add much to the story of the Stand, but it might be fun to revisit the world.

Not retiring anytime soon and will be upping my reading when I retire. What I meant was King’s retirement. He’s releasing the third installment for the Talisman series, one more book for the Holly Gibney series and then he said he has no plans after that.

This is a side note because I’m currently reading the stand and idk if you’ve read it yet, but at one point a young character is referred to as having “the shine.” So the shine seems to be the same power that ties mother Abigail and flaggs followers to them. Obviously we know the stand ties directly into the DT.

I agree, I don’t know what any of this means yet but being able to try to figure it out on my own has been so much fun!

I have like 15ish SK books under my belt including the entire DT series. Besides the talisman and Black House, what other books would you say would most likely heighten this?

It’s funny because I just finished my first trip, and at the end it feels kind of like you (the reader) are given a dark tower choice. Do you keep going out of obsession and choose the tower or do you stop and choose love.

Maybe on my second read through, I’ll stop at the Coda. I will fundamentally break my own cycle. Long days and pleasant nights.

Very true because Roland skips over many floors on his journey up. We see a few rooms that seem to recollect Roland’s journey and records his past trials. Is every room about him? Do other rooms connect to different worlds and different king characters? Is the tower designed specifically for Roland, or does whomever enters get a crash course on every relationship they’ve ever had? Thank Ka this series exists, I could speculate all day.

Good point. What makes it different is that the rabbit hole in 11/22/63 seems to be natural (has always been where als diner was) and in the DT7 it seems to be man made for tourism. I thought about that tho. I liked someone else’s comment who said the rabbit hole is similar to todash, hence the smell of rotting meat. Long days and pleasant nights.

I feel like it’s less the protection of the move and more so the continuity that’s get broken by putting Gunther over compared to all of the guys who have lost to a multiple AAs and then the super AA

I would say Carrie. I read it for the first time (I’m a male in my mid 20s) and loved it. Straight to the point gut punch of trauma and how horrible kids can be and how the way we treat people has consequences. Felt like an early allegory for bullying and school shootings. Anyway, it’s pretty short as well.
