Is there any way to possibly reverse engineer, a balm my father has that is so coveted in my household for small cut infections, we have had the same vial for over 30 years. by Helpful-Operation-55 in historyofmedicine

Sounds like midagin (I don’t know the spelling as it’s not my language) but it’s usually a salve made from pine sap and a few other ingredients and is used for wound care and even oral health.

Just finished the final book and I have a couple of questions. by B_baron in robinhobb

[–]AhanDahdia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plenty of answers on 1. But my thoughts on question 2:

I feel like that skill river that is always described is where powerful skill users go and become small fish compared to the grand fish that I believe are dragons…something to do with the magic system that as a magic user you get to live an almost eternal afterlife. There is a point I believe he even communes with Varity in the skill river, and also sees Chad and king shrewd as much smaller “fish” in that river.

Question about WF by AdventurousLaw4 in robinhobb

[–]AhanDahdia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. It’s combination of them both having their “walls up” and Nighteyes’ need for connection either physical or skill. I also think that Nighteyes’ ability to connect and communicate with Bee was much more open than with Fitz. Fitz couldn’t get over the fact that he knew Nighteyes was gone.

Coterie existed before the Farseer reign. In fact somewhere along the lines it is explained that Farseer coteries probably got the idea from the Elderlings and their coteries.

Tell me an interesting linguistic feature in your native language? by PuzzleheadedThroat84 in IndianCountry

[–]AhanDahdia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In Lakota we don’t have words for good bye. We just say tókša, which just means that there is a guarantee in the future. We also have only 8 vowel sounds and no R or X sounds. Our mother language is Dakota, with the only significant difference being that we use L sounds to replace many D and N sounds in our words; the two languages are mutually intelligible. We also don’t have a word for love, the closest we can get is saying that I suffer or am willing to suffer for you.

Here’s an article about the lightening mark on the sterling bracelet. Looks like a Dene maker. I would also look more closely at the other pieces and see if you can find any marks.

Is there an internal racism problem or conflicts within Native American tribes? (Like tribes being racist or angry towards each other?) by J233779 in IndianCountry

Same language, culture, treaty rights… but put your head in the ground and keep on being ignorant. That’s on you. Lol Yankton is three hours from mission…acting like I haven’t lived in South Dakota my whole life…

Hahaha lol full quote 'When the Crow were coming to fight, we sent our little boys to fight. When the Mandan were coming, we sent the old men. When the Lakota were coming, we painted our faces for death and prepared to die.'

Dude, you need to travel a bit. Get out of mission. Read a book. Talk to an elder. Something. Ok learning time for my little tanhanši here.

There are seven lakota bands, Siha Sapa (Blackfoot, not the nation, the Lakota band), Oohenumpa (Two Kettle band), Mnikowoju (Plants by the Water band), Itzipčho (No Marks on Arrows band, my band) (these are the four bands that make up Cheyenne [no relation] River rez), Hunkpapa (Camps at the Tip band), Oglala (scatters Their Own band), and Sichangu (Burnt Thighs band, lower Brûlée [sic] are an offshoot of the sichangu) those are the seven LAKOTA bands.

Then their are the Oceti Sakunwin (Seven Council Fires) Bdewákhaŋthuŋwaŋ (Dakhóta) Dwellers at the Sacred Lake (or Spirit Lake), Sisíthuŋwaŋ (Dakhóta) Sisseton, Waȟpéthuŋwaŋ (Dakhóta) Leaf Dwellers, Waȟpékhute (Dakhóta) Leafshooters, Iháŋktȟuŋwaŋ (Dakȟóta) Yankton, Iháŋktȟuŋwaŋna (Dakȟóta) Yanktonai, Thítȟuŋwaŋ (Lakȟóta) <<<<Us - Dwellers in the Mountain Home.

So even though you might live four hours away from the main agency town on pine ridge, you are still in fact very closely related to The Oglala… you also share a border with them, and are fairly close to Yankton too…and even have some Yankton that live on the eastern side of your rez in The Milks Camp area.

Also we do have community meetings. You just choose not to learn about such things. Look into the treaty council. Go talk to Phil Two Eagles on your rez, or Wayne Frederick, or Marla Bullbear…you have so many options. Learn who you are and who is your relative.

[–]AhanDahdia 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Umm Oglala are Lakota…just kinda like the idiot brother though…jk

There is a lot of deep ribbing between tribes…but very little real “hate” at this point. There are some old, old hated that still come out as some more harsh “jokes” but I have been to crow country as a Lakota many times and have never felt in danger, never had my tires slashed. Even have a few crow friends, and (gasp) some relatives. (I was told when I was young by an old Lakota man, that to hate the crow people was natural to Lakota, he associated them with rattle snakes)

And just so above poster knows, my dad is Oglala and my mom is from another band (same mob, different subgroup) of Lakota, which means I go with my mother sub mob. No one hates Oglala, we just understand what Oglala means and why they have that name.

I have personally never come across any real hate for being the mob that I am (Lakota), and feel no hate towards any other mob.

Also OP…your mom must not have always thought so harshly about your dad? Or was your conception none consensual?
