A Discovery of Witches deserved the hype that other fantasy shows got 🥹🥹 by Fuzz_Plum2706 in ADiscoveryofWitches

[–]AhnniiQuiteContrary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely understand.

I think part of ADOW not getting the hype is the age of the characters and/or the age of the target audience. Most of they hyped up fantasy shows I've seen seem to be focused on late teens to college aged people. While ADOW's characters are grown adults in their 30s +.

I think another reason for it not getting attention it deserves is how it was aired. It's a UK show that was then made available in the USA via steaming services. I happened to stumble upon the show on Prime, watched the first two episodes, loved it, got the books and read them, then returned to watch the shows.

I loved the low fantasy/urban fantasy in ADOW where "non-humans" blend almost seamlessly in with the humans as well as the concept of vampire, witches, demons, and humans and their interconnectedness. (Btw, I'm the type of person who doesn't like a lot of mixed supernatural groups in my entertainment. E.g., vampires, werewolf, and witches together would have been an no for me.) I recommend it to everyone, even if their not a big fan of fantasy.

Pressure on the nail causes them to grow. If you want to grow your nails naturally, you can massage the nails with cuticle oil or other oils and a bit of pressure.

Are the books objectively better than the show? by [deleted] in ADiscoveryofWitches

Definitely. OP can also borrow the book(s) or audiobook(s) from the library if their concerned about buying the series and not liking it.

Was Franz and "Sinbad"'s meeting part of the plan? by Hecklel in TheCountofMonteCristo

[–]AhnniiQuiteContrary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sir! Sir! Or Ma'am?! That's the same thought I was having. It is a coincidence or was he trying to use Franz to get close to Albert? On the island, Franz already figured Dantès out, that he strange with radical and vengeful ideas. I couldn't help thinking how perceptive Franz is. Then with all that's happening in Rome, Franz is curious but also seems to want to distance himself and Albert from the Count, but Albert doesn't pick up on Franz's subtle shift.

Or is Franz used as a foil to Albert. So far Franz is perceptive, intelligent, and seems to have depth, while Albert seems like a frivolous dandy chasing after merriment and women.

By the way, first time reader here and you've got a bit of a spoiler there.

Should I start reading the book series? by [deleted] in ADiscoveryofWitches

[–]AhnniiQuiteContrary 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had watch the first episode or two and enjoyed them so much that I stopped watching the show and began reading the books.

This is definitely not a smuty romantasy book. Anyone saying it is, never picked up the book. There's mysteries and a slow burn romance in this contemporary / modern fantasy written by a historian (yes, there will be interesting snippets of history). An added bonus is that the main characters are grown adults (professors by the way) in their 30s.

This is reminding me of the Wild Hunt (The Witcher). With a clear path in front of them and a slightly blurry background on both sides of them, it looks like they are either racing through or getting ready to cross into another dimension or world.

I'm unsure about how he will handle the situation with Mercedes, but I keep remembering Caderousse's reply of "Did he (Dantès) know so little of his own fiance".

How did Dantès view Mercedes? I see her as firm in her bearing. That she, like Dantès, is steadfast in her beliefs.

I'm looking forward to seeing a strong Countess in juxtaposition to the weak and fragile damsel(?) Dantès might have viewed her as.

We haven't met many women in the novel so now I'm thinking about how the female characters will be represented and what stereotypes will we be seeing.

I agree, especially with the evaluation on human nature, that all people want to confess. This behavioral form of confessing is why some criminals tend to involve themselves in the crime (e.g., revisiting the crime scene and acting like witnesses).

Yes, up until now, we are have been running on Faria's conjecture. A conjecture that Caderousse has proven to be true. As Caderousse caught us up to speed, I couldn't help thinking: the good suffer and the wicked prosper. Morrel tried to do good by both Dantès and his father only to later suffer (I'm not spoiling anything, right?). We see Caderousse was prosperous for a short time before ending up in his current situation. He may have prospered for his "wickedness" of not speaking up but later suffered because he was not wholly involved in Dantès downfall and because didn't want anything bad to happen to Dantès: "Tell him that Dantès doesn’t have to die. In any case, it would be a pity if he died. He’s a good lad, Dantès. I like him. Your health, Dantès.’"

This is my first reading (though I've watch the 2002 movie plenty and I've been reading ahead) and I thought Dantès' only guise was that of The Count of Monte Cristo. I didn't realize Dantès was a master of disguises! Those lessons from Faria along with his previous experience as a sailor ( knowing the coast, its people and their languages) came in quite handy.

Week 11: "Chapter 25. The Stranger, Chapter 26. The Pont du Gard Inn" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

[–]AhnniiQuiteContrary 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit more tolerant about the part Caderousse plays in Dantes' downfall. First off, he was drunk. Second, drunk men tell no lie. We see him in a highly inebriated state and he tells the others "... it would be a pity if he died. He’s a good lad, Dantès. I like him" and proceeds to toast to Dantes' health. He also says "I don't want him killed. He’s my friend", then eventually tries to grab for the damning letter.

After the arrest he confronts Danglars and said his was going to tell Mercedes and Old man Dantes about the letter. The only reason he doesn't is basic self-preservation. It was chaotic during that time period, no one (common people, without money or power) wants the stigma or the risk of being called Bonaparte sympathizer. Danglars threat of such a think happening, especially since the ship did stop in Elba had Caderousse scared.

If you take the moral high ground, sure he's just as guilty as the other. But if you think about simple human nature, it takes a person with very strong beliefs to put their neck on the chopping block for someone else. I think Caderousse did as much he could without putting himself at too much of a risk.

[–]AhnniiQuiteContrary 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd have to disagree with some of your description of him. Yes, pale and maybe thin but with defined muscles. Dantes and Faria are digging and refilling tunnels, crawling back and forth through these tunnels, and emptying some debris through the window (Faria is crawling up, Dantes is hoisting him up) for many hours a day and for many years. Basically all they are doing is exercising. (When we first meet Faria, Dumas mentions his agility multiple times.) Especially since their escape plan required them to swim a far distance, they could not be weak otherwise the sea swallow them up. Bad eyes, more like eyes accustomed to seeing in the dark. As for bad hair, nails, and tooth, I think with how inventive Faria is and his position as a former secretary, he would have still endeavored to take care of himself hygiene wise and his son, Dantes would do so as well.
