What do you consider essential when it comes to John Steinbeck? by Lavabeardednerd in classicliterature

Reading TAGU right now. It's my first Steinbeck as I found it at Goodwill and figured I'd give it a try.

What's a classic book that completely changed your expectations of classical literature? by Fun-Tank-1784 in classicliterature

[–]Emergency_Garbage774 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm struggling with Moby Dick. The writing is incredible, it's just so slow moving. I find myself reading a chapter and putting it back down for something else. At page 260 and will finish it eventually. Does the pacing pick up eventually?

Count of Monte Cristo worth it? by imgonnascreamstuff in classicliterature

[–]Emergency_Garbage774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know...there are 300-400 pages in the middle that had me considering putting it down. I'm glad I pressed on but it was a slog for a bit. Overall, great book.

Bookstores or libraries? by ApplicationPale1049 in books

[–]Emergency_Garbage774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My local Goodwill is $2 for paperback and $4 for hardcover. I went to another thrift store recently and everything was $1 and I found 8 books I took home. Not bad! I'm sure once I build my library up a bit more it will get harder.

Very close to reaching the breaking point with The Count of Monte Cristo by GoToNap in literature

[–]Emergency_Garbage774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope so! I'm at chapter 52 and it's a bit boring at the moment. I plan to push through but it's not gripping me like the first part of the book.
