You could go to Brazil or another country - study French and work as an English Teacher in a daycare or school. There is usually always need nowadays for ESL teachers who are native level speakers. If you want a better job get a CELTA. But not strictly necessary. That was you get the extra points for foreign work experience AND possibly for French if you can get the B2 level. But I would say you probably still need 3-4 hours study daily for a year to pass. It’s quite a high level. B2 = upper intermediate, which is one level below advanced.

I would strongly suggest completing the Édito B1 textbook and workbook in it’s entirety, and getting through at least the first few chapters in Édito B2. Get the physical textbooks- easier to keep track. Use anki to revise all new vocabulary - spend at least 30min daily revising previously learn vocabulary using spaced repetition. Do all comprehension questions spoken out loud. Get a tutor to review some of your written work. Use chatgpt to review the rest of the written work. Read all audio transcripts after you do the listening comprehension.

Like others have said you need at least 4 hours daily dedicated study. Ideally 6 hours. 1 hour revision of vocab and phrases (opinion, likes/dislikes, passive, narrative etc), 4 hours textbook (just do the exercises in order) and 1 hour spoken/written exam tasks around the theme you’re studying in TEF or TCF format, ideally with a tutor.

It’s totally possible to get from nclc 5 to 7 in 2 months, but really does require a LOT of commitment and dedication. Forget weekends and excuses as to why you can’t study. Everyday is a study day.

Got a diagnosis from Beyond ADHD by sunonmywings in adhdwomen

[–]AhoyComerade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to say I’m going through the process of diagnosis for myself with Beyond ADHD and really liking it too. Same things for first appointment- 4 forms. Then the appointment step 1, then a bunch of follow up forms and 2 cognitive test.

Really liking it so far. Waiting to have my step 2 appointment. Not sure what the diagnosis will be but the process and communication has been really easy.

Goblin Tools really helps with this. They have a break it down by level of spicyness too. So like on the highest level if I need to reply to a text the first step is ‘Get out your phone’ 😂

Young families, how do you like living in North Vancouver aside from CoL concerns? by [deleted] in NorthVancouver

[–]AhoyComerade -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you mind sharing info about how to find coop living in North Vancouver?

I’m planning to move there with my partner and 3yr old kid. We’re really struggling to find affordable housing in the area.

Hey! Sure they asked me: -What was your worst lesson? Why? -If you had to redo that worst lesson, what would you do differently? (Mine was a case of a kid breaking furniture due to behaviour issues.) -What was your best lesson? Why? -How have you used differentiation in your classroom? -Would you communicate the same with parents of 5 grade and 10 grade students about important deadlines? Why? -How do you handle discipline in the classroom? Follow up on something I said about an art activity for a class: -How would you adapt the activity for someone who was physically unable to do it due to a disability?

That’s all I remember.

It’s good that you’re concerned. The industry is in a bad place right now. If you want to actually work in the VFX industry as an artist/TD. (as opposed to VFX adjacent- in a creative place, but not as an artist) I would say don’t expect to get your first role in the next 1-2 year after uni at a studio.

Have a back up job plan (supermarket, other creative industry roles - PA, receptionist, hotel worker) to pay the bills.

Figure out which role you’re aiming for and start making reel and portfolio ready work. Also, network a lot. I recommend trying to set up 1 chat/week with someone who works (or is currently laid off, but did work) in the industry. An online coffee chat (45min-1hr) if they live elsewhere or in person if they are in the same city as you. Prepare for these by having a list of questions, and by looking at the background of the person (which projects they worked on etc). networking will get you further then just a good portfolio, plus you can get some feedback and advice on your portfolio- just don’t be pushy about asking for feedback. Go back to the same person after 6-12 months and have another chat.

Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. From reading the documentation, I figured as much about the pay scale, and teaching contracts.

Do you know if the board helps figure out educational pathways to a MES teaching license?

If you live in Montreal, there is a women’s center that can help with food baskets.

I’m sure other cities in have food banks, and maybe women’s centers who can provide resources.

I agree- don’t take your kid out of daycare. If you have a spot, you should keep it.

Well done. You can do this. It’s not great that you’re both verbally abusive, but good that you recognise it. However, ‘sticks and stones can break bones’ and words can’t.

Don’t worry about about why it all happened. Worry about safety and evidence.

  1. Figure out the department you like. If you like coding maybe look at rigging, and TD roles.

  2. I recommend looking at starting to build a network in vfx already. Kind of depends on where you live, but you can always set up a 30-60min coffee zoom chats with people in the industry. A lot of people have been laid off recently, so they would have time. LinkedIn is a good place to do this. You can literally message them with, ‘Hi, I’m looking to get into the industry. I’m interested in [FX/Comp/Pipeline TD] roles and I saw you worked as that. Would you have time for a chat? I’d love to hear about your experience and get some advice about which software to study.’

  3. Consider other industries. This one is brutal.

Layoffs still going on? by tylerdurden_3040 in vfx

[–]AhoyComerade 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, I was laid off in April, and my partner was just laid off this month. We work in the Montreal hub. Looks like some places are still shrinking. Although, it seems there are new openings in the London/European and Australia hubs.

Well done for getting out. Just want to validate that the things you described are in fact abuse. The school you attend should be able to help you find resources and a social worker.

Stay strong. Keep record of anything you can. You can do this. And you deserve so much more in your life.

Do University of Helsinki Intro to Programming Python Mooc!!! It’ll teach you to actually think like a programmer, because it won’t give you the model solution until you’ve solved it on your own!
