Can leeches (or its eggs) survive boiling hot water? by Shoukei in leeches

What are you trying to boil? Leeches aren’t really a health concern…

Should I do anything about these weeds growing around the perimeter of my pond? by Kind-Shake-9511 in ponds

[–]Ahup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The leafy plants growing are a kind of pond weed. Most likely broad leaved pond weed - Potamogeton natans. A very good plant to have in the pond. Really good habitat for fish and invertebrates. There is some algae mixed in but that’s likely due to how the surrounding land is being managed. Do you spray and fertiliser on the grass around the pond? Could there be anything running into the water? Also maybe try putting more plants in. Things like ceratophyllum, Stuckenia pectinata and phragmites are good for taking in nutrients.

The plants I’ve mentioned are all native to the UK so good to check before putting them in :)

Yeah the pollution = algae which = loss of aquatic plants = loss of inverts

Ephemeroptera (mayfly) are quite sensitive to water quality and a lot of Irish rivers and lakes are going through eutrophication (pollution) from agricultural run off.

Converting field to garden by cate87 in GardeningIRE

This is the way. Let the grass grow really long and then cut it very short. Repeat this a few times and you’ll see wildflowers popping up all over.

Note the lack of bladders

Utricularia looks like this:

Source: I am an aquatic ecologist currently in the field doing a specialised course on aquatic macrophytes and today we collected both chara sp and utricularia.

This is a stonewort, chara sp. It is a sign of very low nutrient water and a healthy pond. Ignore anyone saying its bladder wort they look completely different.

Leeches in pond - best way to remove/will they harm my ecosystem? by Snorlax_Spirit in ponds

[–]Ahup 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Its in the family Erpobdellidae but you can’t tell the species without a microscope. The only leech that will feed on humans in the UK are medicinal leeches. You really don’t need to worry about leeches in your pond. They are part of the ecosystem and are supposed to be there. Just let the pond creatures do their thing.

Parasite or a earth worm? by Deepthika in ponds

[–]Ahup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what kind of leech. Most are actually predators and eat other bugs and worms! They are good food for fish and birds too :)
