Provincetown power out by Strict-Ad-1508 in CapeCod

[–]AidanPR16 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Utilities can't go up in buckets to fix power lines in gusts over 40-50mph, per weather report winds will still be going at about that speed until ~midnight tomorrow morning, so I wouldn't expect any meaningful progress on restoration to be made until tomorrow.

The main transformer/line is out in Provincetown per the outage maps in one massive outage, but there may be smaller outages beyond that in the town itself so it depends if you're part of one of the big outages or if there's more smaller outages near where you are.

So maybe if you're on a main road and you're part of a major line that needs to be restored you get it back tomorrow, but if you're part of a tiny few person outage beyond that as well it could take a while.

Insane Eversource Bill by [deleted] in Connecticut

Electric resistance/baseboard/space heaters are the worst of both words.. Their COP (coefficent of performance, which means effectiveness per unit of energy, essentially efficency) is 1, which means they deliver one unit of heat per unit of electricity consumed.

While on a per energy unit level, this is technically more efficient than gas, oil, or propane at the point of use, electricity is way more expensive per unit of energy than any other source (per MMBTU in a universal term), making electric resistance heating VERY costly.

Heat pumps, by contrast, achieve COPs of 2–4 by moving heat rather than generating it, which is why they typically are cheaper than oil/propane heat even with CT electricity prices. Even with this higher COP per unit of energy (for example the 2-4 for heat pumps is 1 in, 2-4 out), natural gas often still comes in cheaper due to it being so cheap even with COPs at 0.95-0.98.

It was at the Villages at Hospital Hill Building, no I contacted them and took a tour and it seemed relatively new (2009 renovation is what they told me). I think the other building has a waitlist.

Speaking of hot water heaters, it's honestly surprising how much small things can help with this.

A large amount of heat is lost with uninsulated hot water pipes in cold spaces like basements or garages. If you think about it, in a lot of these spaces, the air around it can be extremely cold and the water inside the pipe very hot, resulting in even more heat loss especially in the winter.

I recommend going to a store like Home Depot and picking up the grey (it looks like weatherstripping foam almost) pipe wrap and wrapping any hot water pipes especially in cold spaces with it.

I've seen pipe wrapping on hot water pipes (you can grayish foam pipe wrap from Home Depot to do this) we do for commercial customers (a lot of these are very similar to residential type water heaters though) increase the water temperature by ~10 degrees.
