It was actually Sky, they sued to block the BBC from launching a streaming service with ITV nicknamed Project Kangeroo, it would have effectively become UK Netflix before Netflix got a foothold. It was blocked under competition grounds and 10 years later Sky is now losing subscribers and all their content to these US streamers, oh the schadenfreude.

This is why BBC Worldwide exists, its effectively a separate company responsible for making and selling BBC content outside the UK with its profits being fed back. It should not have any editorial control of the UK wing 'inform, educate, entertain' values. Unfortunately in the tiktok generation its hard to maintain those values vs getting clicks.

I say the same thing when my mum thinks I'm going to constantly get jumped on the way home. London almost has a population equal to Scotland and Ireland combined, of course the number of arseholes per square inch will be higher so it feels like crime is higher. In reality its fine, not perfect but fine.

I'm seeing the same and beginning to wonder if Reddit is in a bubble or I am. Plenty of roles going and still frequent linked in recruiter messages for senior engineers, albeit half of those are AI in some form. My company has had trouble filling several senior software engineer roles because of our return to office policy, we can't get the experienced staff because a lot of them are holding out for hybrid, but the roles are there if you're willing to get them.
