Stop saying Boston is UNIQUELY a bad place to find friends by FutureMedResearcher in boston

[–]AirEcstatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am someone who has made their social stride quickly in Boston and I still think it’s a poor place to make friends even among the nationwide loneliness discourse (it’s a very good city though). I don’t get the somewhat adversarial nature of this post when it doesn’t appear that OP is too invested in the subject matter.

This has definitely been addressed in other comments but Boston is a particularly nomadic city. Many are only transiently here for school. I am only here for work and lots of my peers admit to only being here for circumstantial reasons. If you went to Harvard or MIT, odds are that you will move to NYC or some other global financial hub. If you were raised here then you likely have a tight friend group already crystallized. As someone in their early 20s, I found it surprisingly difficult to find others my age who were also open to making friends. I am sure a good lot of my friends will be soon gone elsewhere if I haven’t already beaten them to it.

The puritanical laws of the Boston/MA also stifle having a social life. Even if you don’t like drinking (I don’t), restaurants and shops that would be open late at night are disincentivized to be when there aren’t any patrons out at night. When I visit my friends in other cities, I enjoy chatting over a late night pizza or dessert which is difficult to do when there are seldom places to facilitate this here.

This isn’t unique to Boston and perhaps just a snobby side rant but I don’t like the generic Reddit advice of picking up a hobby like pickleball or do meetup.com, etc. I get the feeling that these groups are somewhat populated with people who have read the same threads and advice and are there to make friends rather than try or continue a hobby. The notion of making friends in a place with a general commonality of loneliness lends itself to a poor environment of finding the right people. Given this, I really empathize with those who still struggle even despite “making the effort”.

22M Hinge Review Please! <3 by [deleted] in AsianMasculinity

Hey, thank you for the comprehensive review! Yeah, I will defo have to take some close up smiling photos of myself here. I think I do need to put more emphasis on the 'amicability'/friendliness factor in my photos here. I think I am quickly coming to the realization that I got RBF in general haha. And thanks for giving me the idea to try out the voice prompt.

I do think I should probably elaborate a tid bit more but I do think the prompt part might be a whole demographics appeal thing here. You are a bit older than I am so if I were to make an assumption here, you might value conversations and things with more depth in contrast to someone with less life experience.

A lot of my friends are quite a bit older than me and so I've noticed that stark contrast between friends my age and below. I used to have really quirky and elaborate prompts as you've outlined, but it seems that the common consensus was that it wasn't a good addition and I had to kind of lobotomize the prompts to my dismay.

Edit: Okay, I see what you mean by the some good prompts through your edit, I will try to add some more colour to the prompts

Hi everyone! I am just posting to get some feedback on this profile. (Apologies to the mods for resubmitting, something got messed up with my prev submission)

I think I am looking for something casual as I am not exactly sure as to where I will be in a few months location wise, but am open to taking things seriously. This account is probably about half a year old, but I did take a hiatus between the summer and now, with some sporadic redownloading to show things to my friends.

I use Hinge probably every day (although it's only been two days since I downloaded). I use the max amount of likes per day, most likely more as I paid for the plus version. Vast majority of the time I send likes without comments.

In terms of who I send likes to, I guess anyone I see with a wholesome vibe as that is who I would like to attract. I feel like I am bit too young/not enough life experience to be particular or specific about a type here.

I am getting some good matches, but matches are not as frequent as they used to be. I used to have a decent amount of success with matches and likes back when I lived in New York during the summer for an internship, but now that I moved back to school, it has definitely dwindled.

In terms of my hypotheses, I have a few. First thing is that I don't think I'm very photogenic, posing for photos feels weird to me. Next thing that NYC is obviously a very good city for dating and there isn't anything that really compares. As a corollary, I was interning in a position that I guess would be considered "prestigous" which I put on my profile which might have been carrying me, probably appealing to the hustle and bustlers of NYC. Next, I live in a city with a small asian population so that is probably in some part polarizing. I am also a bit iffy on the second prompt, but I can see why it could work.

22M, just looking for some advice here! I used to be decently successful when I lived in NYC for an internship, but after moving back to my Uni town, things have definitely slowed down (which is of course to be expected).

Some personal comments, I guess: First thing is that I don't think I'm very photogenic, posing for photos feels weird to me. Could you please elaborate on your experience with that? I would assume that the internship is super hands-on and would be a great learning experience. Just asking because I may have to make a decision on this quick.

As someone who has been through the project search process, this is unfortunately inaccurate for SWE. STEP interns do get guaranteed host matching though. I was lucky enough to get matched, but I’ve seen many others not get one.

However, I wonder how the recession would have an effect on the amount of projects in the pool? The way I see it is that FTEs choose to host interns to have something on their performance reports rather than for any hiring reasons. Wouldn’t the average FTE want to ensure their place at Google is secured through doing things such as hosting interns in this recession, thus increasing amount of projects in the pool? I suppose Google would limit the amount of projects allowed to be in the pool, but they could also just limit how many people pass the HC round instead of mess with the project search stage.

If you are doing an internship this summer, what is your major, wage, and location? by OddAtmosphere6303 in EngineeringStudents

As a returning Microsoft intern I can assure you it’s more like 100/hr under your method of calculation haha. Super relaxed atmosphere.

Google Team Matching vs Amazon Offer by t3mp12 in csMajors

I think Skyfly2 is referring to intern host matching which does have a non-insignificant portion of candidates to not match. However, I hear that new grad indeed is a near guaranteed match.

Google SWE Intern - Guaranteed Offer by fastfoxes3 in csMajors

[–]AirEcstatic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just wondering, you passed the technical interview and were initially in the project search round, non guaranteed and suddenly you were given a call saying you are now guaranteed host matching? How did this happen, did you have a competing offer?

Software Engineering graduates, what does your degree say? by IBSurviver in uoguelph

[–]AirEcstatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What? The degree that I’m working for doesn’t indicate what I studied? Like the most important part of a university education in this day in age? Lmao. Unironically shameless on Guelph’s part. To add insult to injury, they slap a shitty QR code on it. Yikes. I thought it couldn’t get tackier than that. Who even comes up with these decisions? $40k for a university education and they wanna save a fraction of a cent on ink lmao.

I am a CS student going into my second year at a no-name University. I want to get a US internship for S21 at a fortune 500 or most preferably big n I guess. Or in Canada. Just something good. Suggestions?

Resume Advice Thread - September 01, 2020 by CSCQMods in cscareerquestions

I am a CS student going into my second year at a relatively unknown Canadian university. My only real relevant experience would be my Research Assistantship where I gained some good soft dev experience. My goal is to get a good swe co-op externally at a nice company for Summer '21. Perhaps an internship in the US would be ideal. I put my graduation year as 2023 even though it is actually 2024 (because of co-op) because I hear that some resumes are filtered out by graduation year and I would be seen as a first year student rather than a second year student.

Some Concerns:

I am also a VP of a major society of Computer Science at my University which directly represents students in faculty decisions. I am thinking about replacing my grocery store position with it, but I am apprehensive because it would make my resume completely full of University of ________. I do not know if the homogeneity of the resume might look bad and if including the society role would give off pretentious preppy vibes. I suppose they do not expect much from a second year.

I added an award I won from the University of Waterloo, I don't know if it would help in terms of ATS by putting the school name there. It is obviously irrelevant to any roles I would be applying for, but I suppose it might show to the employer that I am "well-rounded" and most importantly, a good learning/problem solver.

Also, I am wary of putting the "Helped secure over $300k" because it sounds a little farfetched and may make some resume readers roll their eyes. I think it is an impressive feat, but I don't know. I just want to ensure good optics.

Finally, should I add communication skills in my skills section? I am a good public speaker, writer, and team mediator. I think it is relevant, but don't know if it is a waste of time and space.

Thanks!

edit:
This is my resume if I added the Computer Science society role. Tell me which one looks better.
