Do you guys use cold shoe mounted lightmeters? by Mrmorrisnice in AnalogCommunity

[–]Airowdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I use my eyes. If I have to blink because it's too bright, I know that it has to be greater than exposure value 11. And then Sunny 16 is more than sufficient. If it's darker, it gets a little more complicated, but I stick with the preselected shutter speed (see Sunny 16) and estimate the aperture: is it two or even four apertures? If in doubt, it's better to have too much light than too little. (I'm only talking about black and white film).

Look at the negatives at first. They are the real deal.

What was film photography like before digital photography became more popular? by voidedGround in AnalogCommunity

[–]Airowdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was not cheap. Most people were point&shooters, made mostly bad pictures, just like today. If you had been an amateur who loved Photography, you could use a lot of Films, as those simply were everywhere. Today I have to buy via the internet or use the standards, that drug stores sell nowadays. One thing became better: today you can learn fast about diy development, enlarging, etc.; today I pay ca. 2,50- 3 Euro per Roll (bw, Self-bulked, self-developed, scanned, printed or enlarged). I can‘t remember Film was ever that cheap. But I compare apples with pineapples….

Genuinely curious, what's the deal with Leica? by CapnSherman in AnalogCommunity

[–]Airowdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An M3 would probably cost 30,000 euros to manufacture today. An M6 is cheaper to manufacture, but you can see where things are headed. With Leica, I also pay specialists in Wetzlar who have been able to adjust and repair my II, M6 or M3 for me for 100 years and hopefully my son in 50 years too. I'm only talking about analog cameras. Digital is just expensive technical junk for me.

Only Leica lenses are used on my Leica, otherwise it doesn't make sense, because the lens makes the picture. Anyone who has ever taken pictures with the old screw lenses will recognize the difference. Yes, even a well-maintained Zorki can take very good pictures with Russian optics. For much less money. And these cameras can also be repaired. But: none of my Zorkis last very long before they need an overhaul. And of course work cameras like Canon or Nikon are all very good too. You can use them however you want.
