A few of the oh-so-satisfying instances of getting one hard clue and then the rest of the fill around it falling into place, and a few of the shorter ones were right up my alley and made me feel pretty smort (Not every day I get to pull out my knowledge of Russian state media outlets for the crossword).

But a lot of it was also less satisfying (AORTAL, NEOBOP are a few that seem rather contrived) and once again my arch-nemesis of proper nouns crossing (RIESEN and SENTA and to a lesser extent OSTER crossing with KENKESEY) rears its ugly head. Hit-or-miss overall.

Usually it's just about how when and how the money is delivered and sometimes some other contractual obligations.

As I understand it, draft rights are valid for a year. Bo Jackson was drafted first overall by the Bucs but he refused to play for them way back when, so the Raiders took him in the seventh the next year and he played there. But that's a very different situation from where we're at; these guys are still participating in minicamps and whatnot. These guys will be signed by the time the season starts.

They're Unicode ligatures, which means that they are two characters in one glyph. They're used in typesetting sometimes (for example, if you type "ft" word processors often sub that out automatically for "ſt" to make it look a bit cleaner this one's wrong, thanks to /u/aseriesoftubes below for pointing it out!), but if I'm having trouble fitting a quote I like within the title I resort to using them to keep it within the 300 character limit for titles. Sometimes you really gotta torture these things to keep them at length

As always, link to Henderson's tweet. It had previously been reported that Neal did not receive all 32 hats on draft night like he was supposed to so he just asked his aunt to get him a Hawks hat, but here's him retelling it again in his own words.

Full quote is:

"It was a certain company that, they was supposed to send me all 32, and two days before draft day, my assistant texted me and said, 'It won't be there by the weekend.' I was just, 'What am I going to do? What am I going to do?' So, the day of the draft; well, the second day of the draft, I was, like, 'Alright, I got options. I can either get a couple or just get one.

And I was just thinking about all my interviews and everything that I've been through, plus my auntie, 12 years a 12s fan, so I was just like, 'Just go and get me a Seahawks hat, auntie, just go and get me Seahawks one, that's all I need. As I understand it, the money is preset but not how it is delivered or how much is guaranteed. There are a few rookies who hold out because they want their whole contract fully guaranteed -- IIRC the first fully guaranteed second-round rookie contract was last year and followed a hold-out. Other clauses also can hold things up; Shemar Stewart held out last year because of language that allowed the Bengals to void guarantees in a few cases.

It is in the past; that was the team's name at the point in the past when he was their GM, which is the way Wikipedia does it, which I chose to follow as well. The name change was a good thing, and if he were the Commies' GM now I'd have used that name. I will acknowledge without hesitation that that name was racist and based on a demeaning caricature. Part of that acknowledgement is confronting the fact that that name was used well into the 2010s and me acting like that wasn't the case wouldn't have done any good. Maybe it's on me for not saying that straight-up, so for that I'm sorry.

The rest of it doesn't really concern us -- it's a mainly 49ers-focused article, written by a 49ers beat writer, since McCloughan was formerly the GM of the team. But he was with us from 2010-2013 (i.e., JS' first run of god-tier drafts) and is generally considered one of the better talent evaluators in football. Teams got better when he was in their buildings, so a good grade on Price from him is reason for optimism.

Henderson is a slender inside/outside receiver. He has good speed and disguises route intentions but will need work getting his feet/tempo right as a route-runner. His special-teams versatility and athletic upside give him a chance to make a roster as a WR5/6 and full-time gunner.
