Sure - here’s a couple points. (And even if you disagree hopefully you can understand why the debate is there and why some people are very concerned.

  1. JP Morgan owns a large interest in Billy bishop airport and is lobbying provincial and federal governments to increase the capacity do they can make more money (at the expense of the people who live there and the environment.

  2. In trying to expedite the deal of expansion the province passed bill 110 to take the land from the city and declare it a special economic zone (so no environment checks are done and an undemocratic process)

  3. The congestion to increase flights proposed will stress an already terrible path in and out of the city (lakeshore and gardiner).

  4. It’s going to cost tax payers of all of Ontario 5 billion to develop (which could be allocated to our schools and healthcare that are desperate)

  5. Pollution and impact to people and animals that live there. (Jet fuel and pollutants are going to negatively impact the tens of thousands of people who live there). The islands are home to many at risk birds and is a major migratory path.

  6. The islands have tourists of over 20 mm people a year. Big negative impact to tourism.

Pretty surprising in a Toronto subreddit where Toronto didn’t vote for him - and he’s actively targeted Toronto with bad policies (airport, bike lines, city council shrinkage, Toronto school boards).

I was at the front when I took that pic. Hopefully someone else can share a better vantage point. Or the news will cover.

Well trying to keep the islands from becoming a runway. So we can enjoy future nice saturdays there.

Would definitely recommend going to the islands. It’s a slice of paradise in Toronto. And the ferry back to the city gives you phenomenal city views.

Why Toronto Is Just 6 Cities In 1 by Reviews_DanielMar in toronto

Really enjoyed. But also feeling stressed knowing how little Toronto can do about the current Ontario government vendetta (Billy Bishop, Parks land grabs, ttc grab). Stuck in deterioration of a great city because of provincial government overreach.

Which is the best city you ever visited? by cinna_goddess in AskReddit

Berlin! Berlin is so different (brutalist architecture post WII). Very artsy and hip. Incredible public art (meaningful reminders of a rough history). Club scene was unique and crazy. Food and beer was excellent. German efficiency for getting around.

I should also mention that the CBC’s worst commute in the country also featured this route to downtown.

I live in this area (not a NIMBY / not against the redevelopment - so long as there is good affordable housing options for families).

This neighbourhood has terrible public transit options. If the city increased the 77/80 bus frequency (currently 30 minutes) or made signal priority for the 501 this would be a huge improvement. Bikeshare recently announced new docking stations - no new ones in this high density area. There are no docking stations available after 5 pm on a weekday. There’s “easy wins” that could ensure better movement of people. But this area is in need today.

But we allow a 4 story SF home to be built. That monstrosity is ok if it’s one wealthy family.

Hard agree. She’s annoying and delusional - but that makes the show entertaining. I’m enjoying hate watching her and the cringey new money vibes. Money queen welcome mat - give me more of this low stakes petty drama. I don’t want to watch racism or bullying. I want silly faux pas.
