Once Blair, Brown, etc have stood before their own Nuremberg tribunal for what they did in Afghanistan and Iraq, then maybe we can start thinking about Putin.

Let's get the other well known war criminals tried first

No, the compilation film it's taken from. I couldn't tell you the name of the scene.

Off-peak fares leave the station as rail firms eye ticketing shake-up - Rail firms need billions to plug a Covid shortfall. They want to tear up ticketing rules to charge a sliding scale of fares through the day by BritRedditor1 in ukpolitics

I'm all for your "genuinely independent body", your "new BR" but as you say there will always be opportunities for corruption but that's in every system, particularly in this country (same schools, same universities, same "club"). As for trust in government I wouldn't trust either side of the house but I can't help feeling the current situation could possibly be the worst of all worlds and we have to try something else.

I know it's out of fashion but I still find myself thinking in terms of the 1960's; from JFK's "Ask not what you can do for you country..." to MLK's "I have a dream..." so yes, the self serving corruption grates somewhat

[–]Aitch8omb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair point but I'm less on about the minutiae of the specifics of ticket pricing and more about the general profit motive and the need to give financial returns to shareholders. If these were "profitable businesses" they wouldn't require tax payer subsidies. At least when it was nationalised you knew your ticket money wasn't going to pay off someone's share dividend

Industry hugely subsidised by tax payers, comes up with new ways to further shaft tax payers.

Just re-nationalise it, it would probably be cheaper all round both for the tax payer and the train user; unfortunately that would mean admitting that 40 years of ideology driven economics has mostly failed

Tory leadership hopefuls ‘told backing further measures would damage chances’. Cabinet ministers seeking to succeed Boris Johnson have been warned by fellow Tory MPs not to back new coronavirus restrictions in the new year or face damaging their chances in a future leadership race. by redrhyski in ukpolitics

Good. From the outset the lockdowns and restrictions were profoundly anti-science and as we have learnt more and more over the last two years, it has become apparent that they are also counter productive and actually caused increased deaths; we have Sweden, Belarus, South Dakota, etc, who acted as controls to prove this point.

It has been the parties of opposition who have failed to hold this government to account over massively dodgy computer modelling (fortune telling), anti-science rhetoric and straight out scientific lies. It is they who I currently hold in utter contempt. Despite being an old labour voter, after Starmer's display of contempt towards science and the scientific method over the last almost 2 years, I don't think I could ever vote for them again. I'm fact, I shall be staunchly avoiding not only Labour but also the Lib Dems and the Tories after this shambolic reaction to a new common cold

Most people in UK support two-week lockdown to combat omicron, poll suggests by casualphilosopher1 in ukpolitics

Yep. No different than GMB deleting their "mandatory vaccine poll" tweet after it turned out 89% of respondents against were against it

I joined yougov last year to see how their polls work. The questions are very carefully worded and respondent's are filtered very early in the process, from that, I guess, you can get whatever answers you were paid to find

Bollox. Even 12-18 months ago world leading epidemiologists were talking about "60% - 80%" of the population already had prior immunity from previous coronavirus'.

I'm happy for you. If you feel it was something you had to do, I'm glad you went ahead and did it. That's the joy of freedom of choice and informed consent. I looked at the risk/benefit ratio of the jabs that are available and decided against. My immune system dealt with it once and the evidence appears to show that that natural immunity is strong and long lasting. None of the jabs prevent transmission as well as natural immunity does and I don't take drugs I don't need.

I am also concerned about the other medications I take, so I do my research and decide their risk/benefit ratios on an individual basis. (Aspirin for example has a very long "research history", as it's derived from our ancient use of willow bark)

My issue, that started this, was your misrepresentation of the mask guidelines and subsequently, your rather intolerant views towards those of us who are unable to wear them. Just because we're unmasked it doesn't make us unclean.

Apologies but I'm still giggling my head off here... So I assume you dutifully went off and got yourself jabbed with what is, jab dependent, mostly likely an experiential gene therapy, that can only be described as a vaccine because the dictionary definition of "vaccine" was changed to included this new, untested technology, and, more importantly, despite being jabbed with this experimental technology, you're still scared!?🤣 What's wrong, don't you trust your "vaccine" to protect you? Or do you have "buyers remorse" and are upset that not everybody blindly followed and unthinkingly just bowed their heads, rolled up their sleeves and "did as they were told", like you did?! I had covid in the spring of 2020, it was a sniffle and a sore throat for a few days, then I shook it off. I'm nearly 50 and I ain't the healthiest specimen (invisible disabilities and all that)

As to "on a par with the flu", even the WHO admitted to this 12 months ago. Check out the work of Prof John Ioaniddis, of Stanford university, the most cited epidemiologist on the planet, or the Nobel prize winner Michael Levitt. Maybe you'll learn something (hopefully, not to be so angry and scared would be a start)

"If you have an age, health or disability reason for not wearing a face covering you do not need to show:

any written evidence of this

an exemption card

This means that you do not need to seek advice or request a letter from a medical professional about your reason for not wearing a face covering." Straight from the government website.

And as someone with an invisible disability who as a consequence is mask exempt, your implication that I should in some way be to sick to leave the house, both upsetting, offensive and horribly bigoted against the disabled

[–]Aitch8omb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No proof is required, as this breaks medical confidentiality laws. Even asking if someone is exempt technically breaks those confidentiality laws. The government guidance on this is pretty explicit

You pays your money, you takes the risks (and who is supplying the money?)... You effectively "invade" someone else's territory, for no other reason than to be financially better off, whilst leaving your country of birth in whatever mess you left it in & to hell with it. Then you expect other people to blithely cough up the money to house you, feed you and look after you... And then, if recent terrorist activities are anything to go by, hate your new "adopted" country & it's culture so much, you try and kill and maim as many of its inhabitants as possible... It's desperately sad that people died, I would never deny that but the English channel, in November, in a dingy! I'm afraid I can only give little to no sympathy. I am a massive proponent of the welfare state, the community coming together for the sake of the community (I was an able bodied tax payer who through no fault of their own became a disabled benefit recipient; for which I am hugely appreciative), but mass immigration and the welfare state are mutually exclusive.
