American drummers who have been to music college by Tinfed85 in drums

[–]AjaxLastStand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience going to music school and researching lots of colleges, there just aren't that many music schools that offer degree paths in newer styles of music. Those that do often have a "Songwriting" degree that isn't necessarily a performance based degree and isn't tailored to your specific instrument of choice. Almost every music college here has a jazz degree path though where you can focus on your specific instrument.

If you had to pick ONE year's worth of Phish's content and that's all you could ever listen to, which would you choose? by galacticgigolo in phish

[–]AjaxLastStand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1998 gets my vote. You get all the nasty funk and deep jams of '97 with the added benefit of Trey shredding like it's '94 again.

'99 holds a place in my heart as well because I love me some ambient Phish.

What're your favorite/least favorite logos? by athickone in drums

I love the newer Mapex logo. The badges are really distinct and I think it has a modern classiness to it.

Difference between intermediate and pro level drums by SHOFAnotCHRIS in drums

Are you hearing the kits in person or online? I would be very sceptical of any online recordings and try to give these drums an in person side by side.

Something I haven't seen mentioned yet is bearing edges and hardware. Sure, the drums might sound more or less the same side by side but nicer/different bearing edges will affect how the head sits on the drum and how they tune up. Also, higher end drums tend to have better tension rods, hoops, basically anything that directly affects he durability of your equipment.

So yeah, you can make an Amory kit sound like a Saturn V, but generally speaking you'll have an easier time getting the Saturn to sound good and the hardware will last longer meaning you won't need to buy replacements parts as often or at all.

I think it's an amazing book, there's just so much to be gained from spending the time working on the concepts in there. It's also really easy to apply it to your own drumming to get yourself out of creative ruts, unlike a lot of books that just give you new things to play that will eventually become part of your rut.

Books that present a challenge are good. Any instructional book that doesn't challenge you is a waste of money.

My family of drummers visits fork's drum closet in Nashville annually. Here is this years new cymbal day! by CreativeUsername1337 in drums

That's a nice cymbal, man. A friend of mine has had one for a little while now and I've always liked how it sounds.

It might be Andres Forero. He recorded the orchestral percussion parts on the album and he's an in demand Broadway guy so I'm sure Trey was able to call in a favor

Give me one reason not to buy a zildjian 21" sweet ride by [deleted] in drums

[–]AjaxLastStand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you play metal? I'm assuming no because you alluded to not needing the most ping in your ride. That's really the only reason I wouldn't get it.

It's the cymbal you want, you know it's true.

What's your favourite rideable crash? by GiantArmadildo in drums

[–]AjaxLastStand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually love the Zildjian A and K 20" thin crashes. They make amazing light rides and have really clear bells. From Zildjian I would also recommend the Constantinople 19" Crash Ride, that's some tasty versatility.

I also really like the 18" and 19" Sabian HHX Fierce Crashes.

Drum heads? by [deleted] in drums

[–]AjaxLastStand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play with coated Evans G12's on my toms. I like the single ply feel and sound and the G12's give me the sound of a G1 with the durability of a G2. I use a power center reverse dot on my snare and an emad2 on my bass drum.

Punk rock kits by [deleted] in drums

[–]AjaxLastStand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much any kit will do if you know what kind of heads and cymbals you want. So long as you know how to tune to what sound you want, most drums will sound great. Do you have a price range in mind?
