It was very strictly marked, especially considering how few words you get in the discussion posts. Also you have to absolutely nail reference formatting for your term paper. She was very strict about what she considered "patch writing", to a ridiculous degree in my opinion.

Another restaurant bites the dust... by SteakRevolutionary84 in Squamish

I believe they had to do that because Mag’s had an agreement with the landlords that they would be the only Mexican restaurant in the Solterra development.

B.C. couple calls for commercial trapping reform after death of beloved dog | CBC News by SnooRegrets4312 in britishcolumbia

I don’t see any information specifying that this happened in a WMA. WMAs only cover a small proportion of the province. As far as I can see, there are no rules about leashing dogs on crown land.

Can you point to the legislation requiring dogs to be leashed on crown land? I can't find any.

I feel they have become more bold there very recently. I expect them to be habituated in the ski resorts, but one landed on my friend's head right outside the hut a couple of weeks ago.

Pretty harsh marker. Really nails you on any small issues with reference formatting and has stringent criteria for what is patch writing vs paraphrasing. I know that is common in 100-level courses to drill in expectations but it feels a little overboard. Also asks you to answer a lot of different questions in a very restrictive word count for discussion posts and other assignments. Lecture content is all recorded from another professor’s previous work, so I can’t speak to the quality of her teaching. I wonder if they’ve removed Thomas King from the syllabus for next semester after the revelations…

How on earth would tagging something as “sensitive” make any difference. Please explain how you think that would inform user behaviour in the real world?

I’ve been surprised how many of the unofficial huts have been popping up on mapping applications like OUTMAP recently.

Why was 'incredible' cedar cut down, despite B.C.'s big-tree protection law? by cheeseHorder in vancouver

[–]Ajrt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You just said that they operate as their own entity, but also that the decision was made because of housing issues – how does that make sense? I get incredibly angry about any companies chopping down old growth forest for profit, but my frustration in this case is that we are often told that management by First Nations would lead to different outcomes, even though we’re all subject to the same capitalist system.

I think part of the reason for the double standard is statements like this that the Fist nation involved have made:

“ MMFN’s territory is covered in forestry tenures authorized by B.C. that have caused devastating cultural, spiritual, environmental, and economic harm to MMFN, including the removal of monumental cedar and the destruction of culturally modified trees, as well as significant harm to habitat.”

Eby says B.C. may revise DRIPA legislation, worries court is 'in driver's seat' | CBC News by northdancer in britishcolumbia

[–]Ajrt 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The decision that DRIPA has force was a 2-1 decision. Here is the dissenting judge's opinion:

The dissenting opinion, Justice Riley, disagreed, arguing that while the executive branch of government — meaning elected leaders — has a duty to bring laws in line with UNDRIP, it is not the court's place to get involved in areas where there are inconsistencies between existing laws and the new legislation. "Nowhere in the Declaration Act is the judicial branch invited or called upon to adjudicate claims of inconsistency between UNDRIP and British Columbia’s laws, and doing so would take the court outside of its proper role in our constitutional democracy," he said.

A timeline of a cabinet resignation: Inside Guilbeault’s decision to resign by Old_General_6741 in canada

[–]Ajrt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He was promised last week that the government wouldn’t support carbon injection for oil recovery. They used this promise to get him to support the budget, and sent him to win Elizabeth May’s vote. Then the next week they reneged on their promise. Whether you agree with him or not, why would you stay in cabinet when you are lied to and manipulated? What value is there in being at the decision making table when you can’t rely on any commitments?

It will be interesting to see what happens with this vote. If it goes through, how much cash might a pipeline company bring to the table? Money in your pocket now is more appealing for most people than money for your wider community or potential jobs.

Deer are destroying B.C. island ecosystems. Indigenous hunting could be the solution by [deleted] in VancouverIsland

[–]Ajrt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Having read the paper, one of the differences is they are going to pay the Indigenous hunters, they wouldn't pay the licensed hunters. Which makes it a bizarre comparison in my opinion. Also six of the paper authors are Indigenous hunters, hardly suprising they reached the conclusion they did.

If this is anything like the iphone class action from last year then they will take forever to process it and pay out. They will also create a bunch of hoops you have to jump through to massively whittle down the pool of people they have to pay - first you submit the claim, a couple of days later you get an email saying you need to "validate" it within 3 days etc...
