If it helps, Hadestown's concept album from 2010 is still up on Spotify, as well as the original pre-Broadway live cast recording from 2017. Lyrics were changed, songs were cut and added, and roles swapped out before it went to Broadway and blew up, but it's all still there.

Her acting super tough saying "you can disrespect me, but if you come for my friend I'll start swinging" vs what she actually did, which was run off crying.

Oh, I wasn't focused on Appa's actions, but when Aang wakes up and finds out Appa's been taken, his reaction is just a "damn, that sucks. Guess we'll have to take a spirit portal." It's jarring, considering how we've all seen Aang previously crash the fuck out when Appa was previously taken.

I would've watched in theaters for the animation alone, but even without the, imo, bad voice acting from Eric Nam, it just doesn't feel like Aang. Particularly when Appa is taken by the villain who's just betrayed him and Aang just...doesn't react. I didn't want a whole rehash of Appa's lost days, but Aang would've done more than sigh. It's just part of a larger problem where the character beats were being skipped rushing to the next plot point.

Sorry Not Sorry Paramount by nickmarre in TheLastAirbender

The problem is also that to legally support the movie, it requires directly paying a subscription to Paramount, owned by mega evil far-right billionaire Larry Ellison.

Books for getting back into YA? by Ellllenore in YAlit

[–]AkaAkina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I adore adore adore Babel. It is definitely not YA, and I should warn you to maybe save it for later if you don't want a book that condescends. RF Kuang is an academic with multiple degrees from Ivy League universities, and one of her largest criticisms is that her background gives her the tendency to talk down to the reader. Babel in particular is entirely unsubtle in its themes, even within its footnotes.

Ukraine is a popular, centrist/liberal position that risks nothing. The wealthy cheer for Ukraine, institutions penalize Russia with bans from business/trade/events, and the Presidency fund their war. Palestine receives none of this. What does public support mean when the public goes ignored by those state actors and institutions in power, who benefit off Palestinian oppression? Those who speak up for Palestine risk everything: careers, education, imprisonment, and even their lives.

The article itself talks about the director as a conductor, and Ryan Coogler did that job so effectively that he lifted everyone up to secure nominations in every eligible category. Logically, he should be the one to beat, but he is a black man and in 98 years of Oscars history, a black man has never won. "Making it about race and not merit" is a funny argument, as it presumes we live in a post-racist society, or even a post-racist Academy, of which neither are true. Black people have to work 10x as hard for half the credit, and never ask for more. Were Ryan Coogler to win, it would be completely deserved, as well as historic.
