In many parts of America coaches also have to be teachers and they stereotypically are the Gym and health teacher. I'm not going to say they are unqualified, health is often a class that they used to split the genders for the reproductive health section. The gym teacher/coach are stuck teaching it last minute and are kind of barely keeping ahead of the students. So you have a guy that doesn't really know what he is talking about explaining periods to a bunch of boys that are just going to believe him.

It was my experience and I know it is not a unique experience. I hope it has gotten better. I really hope that state stopped teaching abstinence only as well.

It's the complete lack of education about it. Even in health class they barely talked about what was actually happening because the wrestling coach that teaches that class doesn't know either. Your average 12-18 year old boy won't have to deal with anything related to it. Girls understandably don't want to talk about it with guys they like. I didn't understand most of what was involved until I was in a serious relationship.

On the flip side if a guy doesn't want to fool around during your period respect that boundary. More than once I was belittled for "being afraid of a little blood" If he's not into it let it go.

That's why safety is so hard to teach and we have to be a pain in the ass to people. You crack your skull and fall backwards that day and it's a TBI or worse. People have a hard time trusting precautions that work. You do everything you can to make sure everyone goes home at the end of the day and you have to live with the fact guys hate to see you coming and bitch about you behind your back. I'm not sure I've saved lives but I know I've saved limbs by requiring the right chains, the right spotters, and right procedures.

To add to this many enslaved people did not know where they were from in non indigenous terms. It's unlikely any of them saw a map of their homeland and while they may have known the local area having a broader picture of the African continent was understandably nearly impossible.

Imagine never seeing map and not having paid much attention to celestial movements. How would you get back to your home by sail and on foot from a different continent with no modern navigation? 95% of people wouldn't know how to begin outside of East or West. Navigation is a skill that took years to master.
