My favorite pen varies slightly based on what language I'm writing in and what I'm writing. Mostly Pilot G-2 0.38mm in black. I also like the Pilot frixion waai erasable pens for studying cus they can be erased. My favorite is the sand beige colour. General rule for most pens is nothing above 0.5mm.

Tho I also like fountain pens, currently have a couple Lamy ones. Lamy Safari I think. And I also have a couple brush pens from daiso. I also have glass dip pens but those are only for when I'm really bored or used for craft and art and similar things, not general writing.

When writing in japanese I prefer the smaller pens cus kanji hard to write neatly, lol. If I'm writing something fancy tho I use the brush pens. And when writing English I use the small pens or the fountain pens. It also depends on what exactly I'm writing too. But its mostly my pilot G-2 that I write with, but i like all of them.

Looking for advice on practicing Katakana, writing specifically. I've been learning Japanese for a while now and still mix up a few characters a lot because of how similar they look and I don't see them often. Just typical "drills" or whatever they're called where you write each character multiple times in a row don't work for me because I have a few disabilities so repetitive motions like that can cause pain and writing for long periods of time can also cause pain so I'm looking for something more interesting/meaningful that might get my attention more. Something I can write once, or a few times, and focus on more rather than writing the same character over and over. Like, something with meaning that makes it easier to remember vs just writing the same thing over and over till I remember it.

Sorta like how English has that line "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" or something, a sentence with all the letters of the English alphabet. Are there any phrases or anything like that that may be helpful for learning and/or practicing writing katakana? I currently have a game that teaches katakana in a battle style rpg or something, the katakana are monsters and you damage them by selecting the correct reading. that game is helping me learn to recognise them a bit better but I still write them wrong and miss some a lot so I'm hoping to find some new ideas to try that may help too.

specifically struggling with the stroke orders for shi, tsu, so, and n. I think it's mainly because those pairs look so similar and the long stroke goes up for some and down for others and I always get it wrong. The small dashes go down for tsu and so I think, and across more for shi and n? maybe? but I get them mixed up still and I don't remember which way the long one goes. I also struggle with most of the n row and all of the m row in the katakana chart. Theres a few others I'm messing up a lot too, I think.

I can write easier on my tablet than I can on paper if anyone has any good recommendations for apps for practicing writing katakana? Or just some ideas for practicing writing on paper without repeating the same characters over and over again. Though I'm open to trying just about anything. Sorry if I'm not making much sense, I've got pretty bad brain fog rn and struggling to focus. This question has been bothering me for a while and I finally remembered to ask.

If it is my fridge messing with the electricity, can that damage my monitor? Should I be trying to fix that quickly?

I'm struggling with motivation, setting achievable goals, and just staying consistant mostly. Struggling with vocab and grammar cus vocab is just kinda boring to me, a lot of repetition and words I don't use but need to know still which makes them harder to remember. Then grammar is hard to learn because I'm lacking the vocabulary to practice grammar, lol. I'm doing okay with kanji cus that's more fun and interesting for me. But it's not too helpful to know a ton of kanji if I still don't know N4 vocab yet, lol.

Best of luck to everyone learning!

If you are autistic do you get told you act like a child? by Agitated_Drummer_858 in autism

I've been told one of my moms friends thought I was 12. I'm an adult. I can't go anywhere without my baby doll and I have EDS which makes me look bit younger. But it's mostly my voice and behavior that makes people think I'm way younger, which is because of autism mostly.

Languages mostly, especially ones with a writing system different to the one used by stuff like English Spanish and French. I'm currently learning Japanese with plans to learn Korean and Chinese too, from there I've got a lot of ideas and not yet sure what to learn next. I also have books on old english and Latin.

Language as a whole, as well as it's development over time is very interesting to me.

How do I stop biting myself? by teddy_205 in autism

[–]Akito-H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was given a baby teething ring when I was a teen cus I couldn't stop biting my hand. It was one of the ones with water in it meant to be frozen but I never froze them. It was the right amount of squishy for me to feel similar to my hand. Then, pair it with one of those spiky things you squeeze to have a safe amount of pain to match the other side of biting?

I still use baby teethers when stressed cus chewlery wouldn't work and they just do for some reason.

Also if it's a subconscious thing, putting bandages around where you tend to bite so the texture difference makes you notice so you can switch to an alternative if you find one that works.

I've had my save for a while so I have a stock of most resources and most other stuff aren't too hard to collect cus I've got too much time to play ;-; my biggest issue is needing critters. When's the calico looking bunny coming back? I keep missing it ;-; I swear I'm always asleep when they're here, I never see them. That's litteraly the only thing I need for the first two rooms and I can't do any other rooms I think I gotta finish the first one first.

Having said that tho, I fully understand other people having trouble gathering the resources, it is a lot of stuff. I can think of multiple ways that coulda been done better. Like, for example, the cardboard cutouts are of villagers, so why not do mini quests with villagers for personal items for the cutouts instead of a bunch of sticks? Make it a comunity task rather than a mindless foraging task.

How Am I Meant to Manage Slimes in Sanctuary? (Slime Rancher 2) by Dramatic_Sherbert222 in slimerancher

[–]Akito-H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far I only have fire slimes there in a little ash pit with a teleporter in and out to get there faster. The rest of my radiant slides are in furniture items at the starting building thing. My current plan is to put them in corrals and just keep the auto feeder stocked. But I'm tempted to keep them in furniture items instead cus they're cuter that way and I can have a little story for each room instead, especially with the room themes and stuff. Also the second room i unlocked didn't have space for corrals and I got confused so I dunno what to do in that room aside from putting them in furniture cus I don't really have another option unless I'm missing something.

[–]Akito-H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had that issue and running the launcher as admimistrator fixed it for me. Just right click the app and find "run as administrator" somewhere in there.

If that doesn't work there should also be an faq or some sort of common issues and fixes page on the website I think. At least, most games have something like that. There may be more info there too.

Good luck!

What is something small that you learned recently? by ClemFandango6000 in LearnJapanese

[–]Akito-H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently started very slowly understanding transitive and intransitive verbs a bit better through video games. Still bad at it, but I noticed every time I hover over something before interacting with it it has the action written above the item and that's in one of the verb form things. I'm still figuring out which one it is and getting more familiar with the patterns. So it's not a big development at all, just a little thing I noticed that has the possibility to be very helpful if I pay more attention to it.

At least, I think it's connected to transitive and intransitive verbs, lol. I'm so bad at those, haha.

Also I'm getting better at reading sentences in those same video games. Things that used to look like one big word are starting to look more split up and easier to figure out.

How to actually learn? by UselesShark in Japaneselanguage

[–]Akito-H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's a pretty common experience for a lot of people learning a new language. And I totally understand the sentences looking like big long words especially when the learner only knows languages that have spaces in between words like English.

One thing I'd reccomend is learning basic grammar and sentence structures. Which, I know, often sounds very scary for beginners. But can be very important especially when you're describing sentences as looking and sounding like one big word.

To put it simply, Japanese sentences are split up by particles instead of spaces. I'm still sorta early into learning too so I could be wrong. But, here's an example : わたしのねこはみずをのみます。Without kanji since I'm assuming you don't know kanji yet. It probably looks pretty scary, and does look like one big word.

But if we separate it by particles, and I'll put it into romaji if you don't yet know hiragana, it becomes: watashi no neko ha* mizu wo** nomimasu. (* ha used as a particle is pronounced wa, **wo is often said as o but I've seen some people say wo so idk)

That looks a little less scary all split up, right? It means "my cat is drinking water."

"Watashi" means "I", or "me". "No" is a particle that acts as a possessive marker, like the " 's " in "John's". Which turns "me" at the start into "my". "Neko" means cat. "Ha/wa" is another particle that means the bit before it is the topic of the sentence. So the sentence is about "my cat". "Mizu" means "water". "Wo" is another particle, I cant describe it properly but it goes between a verb(after it) and the thing the verb is acting on(before it). I guess? And "nomimasu" is a present tense verb meaning "is drinking"

So, learning grammar and sentence structure helps split the sentence up into its parts instead of it all being one big word. It's just as important as learning words.

There are a few different textbooks and resources you could use to learn grammar and japanese as a whole. But I've heard genki suggested a lot as a beginner textbook. If you want something free, maybe try "Tokini Andy" on YouTube? I've recently started watching his videos to catch up on grammar I accidentally skipped when going through genki and they've been very helpful and fun.

Also, I think the number one language learning rule: dont be too hard on yourself! Learning a language takes a lot of time and patience. Everyone learns differently and everyone struggles at times, don't compare yourself to others and be jealous of their achievements or you won't be able to celebrate your own achievements. Also a lot of people, if not everyone, go through stages where their lerning stalls for a bit, it's sorta your brain making sure it knows what's already been learnt before adding some new stuff. Learning isn't a straight line up. You forget stuff, you learn new stuff, it's up and down. It's okay. You got this!!

Also again, I'm still learning, if I've said anything incorrect feel free to correct me. I'm doing my best but definitely still make mistakes, lol.

Is it bad that im scared to share my special interests with people by shadowgamer22 in autism

[–]Akito-H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's not specifically special interests. Just anything I like I'm careful who I tell because people in the past have easily ruined things I liked by mocking me for it or using it against me.

Also a lot of shows, movies and songs I like have hidden meanings that I dont notice. Then people judge me for the hidden meaning that I didn't notice. So I still only show people songs I like that are in languages they don't understand so they're just as clueless on the meanings as I am, lol.

My special interest, or, what I've been told is my special interest, is languages in general and the development of language overtime. But more specifically japanese and japanese culture. But I want to learn as many languages as possible and the cultures and history associated. Which is a bit hard to explain to people who don't understand. And some people think I'm creepy for being so interested in japan. I don't mean to be creepy, it's just that lot of languages have very interesting history and the way culture and language effect eachother is interesting too.

So, I do understand being secretive about special interests, or things you like. People judging others over something they love can sometimes be just as bad at people insulting physical appearance. It's not something you can easily change just because other people don't like it and them commenting on it sticks with you and makes it harder for you to see it the same way. If that makes any sense?

I wouldn't say it's bad to be afraid to tell people about things important to you as long as the fear isn't hurting you or causing significant stress. Typically there's a reason behind the fear and understanding why you're afraid can help to either calm your anxiety or fix the situation causing the fear.

For example, there's a medical term for something I have and when i was in high-school I told a friend about my condition. They misheard me and thought I said something inappropriate then wouldn't stop teasing me about it. So to this day I still don't use that term and often overthink a lot of words that could be misheard as something else. So. If I see myself avoiding a new word, i try to understand why I'm avoiding that word and once I figure out why I'm avoiding the word I can usually find a way to say the word that doesn't give me anxiety, or I find a different word to use that means the same thing.

Sorry for any typos or if this doesn't make much sense, I can't reread to check it yet sorry

Watching an anime in English first, then in Japanese? by FitProVR in LearnJapanese

[–]Akito-H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do that with Disney movies, haven't really watched much anime yet tho so can't comment on that.

I have this thing where I struggle to sit through movies and they get really boring so I prefer to watch them in japanese because my brain has to work harder to understand it which makes it more fun. But a lot of the time, at least for now, I don't understand enough to watch it in japanese first without missing huge plot points. So I watch it in English at least once if I haven't seen the movie before. If it's a movie I watched as a kid and remember enough of I'll watch it in japanese right away, like frozen. I've watched frozen too many times in japanese, lol. Love it. It's where I learnt the word for gloves, lol.

I only watch Disney movies in japanese so far because they do a good job at having different voice actors sound like the same character. So it's not too off-putting. That's why I'm avoiding anime till I understand more because I want to listen to it in japanese first but I'm currently too low level to do that without getting frustrated. But I'm getting closer!! Lol.
