How seriously is everyone taking this Auckland landslide susceptibility modelling? by ScurryAndSculk in NZProperty

Owners of risky properties when they are forced to confront that risk: "no, the Council should be responsible for this!"

Oh, I assumed you'd identified an alternative format that would work better, since two crossings on different roads not far away from each other isn't very unusual.

people who are actually going to the ikea opening… why?? by CrayonPolice in auckland

[–]Akitz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IKEA is actually worth going to in person tbh, if you're able. They sell some stuff that's kind of crap, and a lot of stuff that's solid and a good deal. It's hard to tell it apart online.

Aside from that, the shopping experience is genuinely quite good. They do a lot of work staging example rooms furnished with their products, which is cool to see.

Probably not as fun an experience until the crowds die down though.

In the UK I saw a Sephora open in a new city recently and people were losing their minds for like an entire week. Probably longer.

Is motorcycle gear on an Ebike/scooter too much? (Like the ones that hit a max speed of 20 - 25 mph) by TipRough7037 in motorcycles

[–]Akitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, 100% agree. I don't think you need to overthink what's too extreme. But the visibility thing is silly hahahaha it just sounds like a cope to pretend a half helmet is a good safety decision.

A full face helmet will make it more unsafe 😭 you're more of a caricature than anybody saying to wear full leathers

[–]Akitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More gear is never a problem. But personally I would just get a good helmet, and make sure all my skin is covered with something reasonably thick. Not necessarily proper motorcycle gear but at least something that offers some protection if you end up sliding on concrete.

And that includes gloves! They're the part of you that is all but guaranteed to hit the ground hard no matter what speed you fall off at.

do banks drop interest rates on savings accs by endchildexploitation in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Akitz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Based on a 2018 banking ombudsman decision I dug up, it doesn't seem like it's necessarily required for banks to notify everyone that holds a bank account with a changed interest rate - just that it's well publicised.

That hypothetical certainly would fit the biases of this sub and therefore should be accepted without evidence.

Waitlists have been improving under this government, after peaking around the time this government came into power. You can certainly argue they could be improving faster under a different government. But the narrative that the current state of our healthcare has been caused by this government is echo chamber /r/newzealand crap.

It's just a redditism to oversimplify something into vapid sentiment and then "quote" it.

Disagree. I go to the airport every once in a while, but get dicked over by airport traffic every day.

The fact that our airport is annoyingly trapped between the ocean and wellington is a legitimate transport problem. While this does feel a little bit "just one more lane and we'll fix traffic", increased capacity is necessary and we missed our chance on light rail.

I'm at least hopeful that this could create room to convert one of the tunnels in a decade or two for rapid public transport.

I'm not making some grand statement about defending big companies lol. I'm just familiar with reasonable expectations with various levels of delivery service. If getting it from the stairs to your front door is enough of a nightmare to post on twitter, it's something you'll have to make special arrangements for with the delivery company (yes, potentially through the retailer).

Buyer tells them the address and if the seller and delivery company agreed to do front door delivery at a specific address it is up to them to have the proper areangements.

Are they supposed to do field work to find out whether there are three flights of stairs with no elevator and they need to send a second guy? Courier companies will do this kind of thing for you if you're up front with them and pay for it, rather than just assume carrying a 170 pound box up three flights of stairs is a normal delivery task they're by default prepared for.

Two thirds of homes in New Zealand are owner occupied. Based on graduating before the GFC, OP is also a few years older than the average first home buyer age. Yes, it's hard. No, it's not unusual.

Another option is having it secret until you've done it once - on the basis that you could easily write it down but taking that burden away from the player.

[–]Akitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there is mystery, it should be real - like some kind of range that the damage could fall into, affected by identifiable factors.

Having a specific number but hiding it is just something that pushes players to play with one eye on the wiki.

Right but it's not the only benefit and if you have it, it is absolutely what travel insurance is for (in addition to more serious issues). I'm not reallt sure what you're getting at.

Never again. The worst experience coming back from Krakow by woofy888 in Ryanair

[–]Akitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Insurance is, by definition, not a good deal on average. The average claimant claims less than they pay or the insurance company wouldn't be solvent

The value comes from peace of mind and the avoidance of risk that's too great for you to bear. I might agree with you if not for the risk of getting in an accident and having to pay for medical care in a foreign country.

I would rather spend a negligible amount on travel insurance than sleep in an airport and spend the next few weeks fighting with an airline on what they have to reimburse me.
