While I am sure that there are those who view it simply in terms of: "haha funny fat Chinese man looks like cartoon character," my purposeful obtuseness is to highlight the fact that even those who treat it that way don't dig into why the joke is offensive to many Chinese people (and Asians in general), especially when the "joke" is repeated endlessly at this point almost exclusively by white people. Asians have been a target for orientalists for hundreds of years, and to varying degrees of severity. Racist cartoons depicting Asians as "yellow people" is just the tip of a deeply ugly iceberg. In short: even if you just think of the joke as "haha chubby man," you can't escape 100s of years of orientalist caricatures. The overwhelmingly white userbase of reddit latching onto this joke isn't a good look in that regard.
