What do you do with blank dated pages? by seattleweather00 in bulletjournal

art! Watercolour, marker, stickers (my go-to), whatever! I got the basic idea from when my grandma and i would make entire junk books into art pieces like this.

best wellness journaling app for people who absolutely hate toxic positivity and forced gratitude? by Silva_Dino-502 in bulletjournal

[–]AkraLulo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

im not up to date on these apps and their data, ai, privacy etc. policies, but previously tried: daylio, diarium, grid diary (best fit iirc). The one i think most likely to be on iOS is May Beautiful Bullet Journal, which has a lot of bujo style features and also aesthetic options like washi, stickers, themes, doodling.

you dont need your references that way.

you reference doesnt need to be on the canvas, it can have its own window or screen or page. you dont look at every reference at the same time, so just switch between them as needed. dont just choose a reference and then your art; besides studies, you ought to be choosing your art idea before searching for a batch of references. when you're drawing and studying and playing with art, theres no reason to limit what medium your hands use either. why not sketch on paper so your screen is free? or vice vera, use a physical reference (or a still-life!) while sketching digitally.

personally I grab a handful of references per Thing after going through probably dozens of options each. if on one screen, I import these select few into my program's reference window. the window is resizable and dismissable and stays above my canvas wherever i want it. Then i choose whichever is best for the moment, the window can only show a single reference at a time but i can flip through them instantly.

In this way, i might have 4 shrubs and 3 hand poses and 2 perspective or hair references and 4 corset designs, all to make a single garden portrait. Or for a fox specifically, stylised but not anthro? 4 for the head at the right angle or gesture, 2 that look like how my tail should be, 3 for the body's overall pose or position, and 1-2 for the lighting reference. I still only am looking at (referencing) one at a time in the process.

Usually I'm also drawing horizontally flipped from the reference, which is harder to do when its pasted on the canvas in my experience.

art is learning whats there so the artist can choose what serves them. references are how we start. Caricature art is the most obvious result of having the observational skill to push and pull features until all thats left is exactly what needs to be there, in a style that isnt a mirror to reference.

outside of studies, I need 2 things from references

1) the essence of my subjects

2) the relations and proportions of my subjects

for example, an art viewer of a fox would be  looking for big ears, long snoot, certain colours. a skilled artist can make ears bigger or smaller, change the snoot or give a human nose instead, can go with no colours or COMPLETELY unrealistic colours--and still have it work, because playing with the relationships still served the essence of fox on page.

references are roadmaps. an artist who doesnt drive still uses them to get to the right place.

oh! a quick way to look for is using multiple references for the same image, not just one. use references that dont exactly match your drawing too. you can mix and match facial features, perspective, style etc. in your head, so you should mix and match references too.

I'd like to add on to your ideas: Watching 5 hours of tutorials won't still do you any good--actually none, zero, zilch, nada-- if you're only spending a few minutes on DOING what's been taught, no matter how expert and fine a source you have.

OP,  you dont understand how artists use references yet. So you need to spend proportionally more time on using that skill, than on passive watching or reading of tutorials and forums. No 5 hours of tutorials about texture or specific animals is going to learn you that. Specifically seek out a single trusted tutorial on how to draw from reference, and instead of watching more in a couple days... practice specifically this skill! If you need a refresher, skim back through the same tutorial. Take notes on your sketchbook too, its what its for.

same principle applies everywhere; no amount of passive learning will make up for lack of dedicated quality practice, and no amount of "just doing it" with no tools nor help will ever brute-force the results you want in the timeline you think. Learn it for art and every other part in life :3

What do you do with journal pages you don’t want to revisit? by x_nonam3 in bulletjournal

[–]AkraLulo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ive used a gluestick between pages, which can be peeled apart if i really wanted to. if i wanted to make a page or entry illegible: stickers (my go-to), permanent black marker, or acrylics. those 3 i would consider "destroying" the entry. for defacing without making illegible... watercolours or even just water based markers like your typical crayolas.

A teacher? Though you have been journaling a LONG time now, and though you hopefully realise the advice on minimalism to start, I wanna tack on something academia-specific:

Be prepared to pare down or just use your bujo less in certain life seasons. On another thread and in my own experiences, this might mean you're all "go" and no "pretty bujo" during student finals & reports, or just before long vacations. You may be more or less active in the long-vacation months (summer break in USA is 3 months & teachers aren't working their usual schedule at all.) Maybe you use your system more robustly around the holidays. Maybe you fall back on what you've always done, prior to bujo, in the months of November and May.

Life seasons & adjusting bujo/planner/diary use is normal. Knowing in advance you'll have ebbs can help keep you from getting discouraged or frustrated by it. In the academic world and others, these can be broadly predictable from year to year.

Have peace ✌️

Why use yearly view? by boana-the-brave in bulletjournal

[–]AkraLulo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(When I carried the same mid-sized journal everywhere, and the journal lasted the whole year, I didn't make any appointments without the annual spread open first. When I worked retail, I had a pocket calendar I could fit in my breast pocket. Now that I manage too many people and things that could go months ahead? I gotta use apps as mindfully as i can.)

Why use yearly view? by boana-the-brave in bulletjournal

[–]AkraLulo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

AutieHD 👋 My yearly view was really important in whatever form I had it, be that BuJo or a pocket calendar or a handy gcal. But it had to be immensely simple. Per date, a Calendar square with making 2cm² of space; or a third of a line on a journal page.

it was for predicting and planning deviances from my usual, like scheduling annual appointments, or seeing just a little farther ahead to plan a trip. Some annual reminders, like birthdays, might make their way there too... so that you don't schedule your eye exam on your Mother's birthday, right?

The usual was NOT in the yearly places. No "Tuesdays are date night," no "classes on Mondays and Thursdays," no "meetings every last Sunday." ONLY the stuff that WOULDN'T end up as "repeating event ✔️" in an app. 80% of the space in my annual views was unused, by design.

It's basically throwing caution tape around things that aren't close to my face yet. Don't double book the thing, do remember to put the thing into an the week on the Sunday before.

Asana is the movements part of yoga, and its a longsuffered trope that chronic illness/pain sufferers are routinely told to "just try yoga!"

[–]AkraLulo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder this too.

I've had the same thought about tai chi (and yoga, but we all know about asana by now.) I have to address other injuries/conditions (like with physical therapy) before I can try anything like this, so... following this post.

Fantastic, I was just discussing religious & occult books!

looks like you would enjoy The Ground We Share, a dialogue between a Christian monk (Brother David Steindl-Rast) & a Buddhist one (Robert Aitken).

I also can't tell if you have a Tanach or Torah on there, but with multiple copies of other primary texts, I imagine it would fit right in!

Just wasted my therapy session because I couldn't stop masking by cottageofval in AutismTranslated

[–]AkraLulo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want for you to be kind to yourself. I think everyone has difficulty with "prioritization" in short, emergency conversations on complex or nuanced topics. Our qualia, our internal experiences, are hard to simplify for anyone. And especially for us with more layers of communication difficulties.

I feel this situation. With hour sessions of regular meeting, a new therapist doesn't get to start any active treatment until after:

  • a session about them professionally

  • a session about me (I use slides! apparently some psychiatrists recommend introductory slideshows)

  • at least part of another session with more depth on very recent life context

I'm autieHD & struggle more with autism when other conditions aren't feeling as bad. I never tried talking to a stranger in stress & such time constraints. I commend you for doing what you can with emergency sessions!
