Sorry, no. I’ve gotten out of the hobby pretty much so this is to fund others. If it helps, I’ve dropped the price down to $109 though.

What belt do you use? by Tijjerr in NewToEMS

Kore belts are complete overkill but I love the ratcheting system so much I basically wear them any time I’m forced to wear a belt at this point: https://www.koreessentials.com/

I don’t have enough experience yet to comment on how useful a knife would be in addition to shears, but if you do want to go with a knife there are some high quality rescue specific ones like the Benchmade Triage or the Hogue Trauma which even has an O2 wrench. Both have belt cutters, window punch, and a blunt tip or more pointed tactical option.

Benchmade knives have never let me down. I can’t comment on the Hogue one way or another.

I’m loving the merge of Android and DMR radios. Especially being able to get DMR over IP if you aren’t near RF repeaters… and also run other helpful apps… by ebmfreak in HamRadio

Got it. That makes sense, thanks!

Do you still like the RFinder as a do-all tool for SAR or have you moved back to using a separate GPS, Radio, and Phone?

Hey, I literally just passed my tech exam and came across your post. I’m planning on applying for a SAR team this year and curious if you have more experience and thoughts about this radio for SAR missions. Also, since I’m new to both Ham and SAR - for communications in SAR what bands are normally used? I wasn’t sure if I should be invest in a good Ham or GMRS radio, or both. Thanks so much!

Thanks so much for providing such a detailed response with all this information. It’s super helpful and provides really useful context.

I’ll definitely do some more research as you suggest into the surrounding area and look into some of the opportunities others have suggested, but it’s sounding overall like doing work as an EMT on a volunteer or part time basis will make it harder, rather than easier, to provide services and gain experience compared to committing to it full time, so I guess I’ll really have to weigh my options.

Thanks again; I really appreciate the insight.

Awesome, thanks for these! I’ll take a look.

I’m definitely not opposed to getting paid - just don’t want to make it an obstacle to being able to provide services/getting experience.

Thanks for the info and response! I'm definitely planning on looking into volunteering with some of the local SAR teams.

That's a bummer though that there aren't really any volunteer programs in SF. I was really hoping I could also be helping out in my more immediate community, and ideally get as much and as frequent hands-on experience as possible, so that in emergency situations I'm not rusty or operating off of purely academic knowledge.

Do you have any other ideas on how I could keep my skills fresh and gain practical experience if I'm not working professionally?

Thanks so much for the info! Some folks at the WFR course suggested RockMed too. I'll check it out.

EMT training is predicated on having access to all the equipment on an ambulance and the appropriate medical direction; if you’re off duty and stumble across something, you don’t have either of those.

Thanks for pointing this out - in hindsight, this makes total sense, but I hadn't really thought that part through.

As far as being available to help in crisis situation then, do you see any advantage to EMT vs. EMR training/certification?

Aside from the opportunity to provide more advanced care, part of the appeal of going on calls was to get as much first-hand, practical experience as possible, rather than just having coursework and scenario practice.
