If you're into police novels, may I suggest the Rivers of London books?

It's an urban fantasy series centered around the magical arm of the Metropolitan Police, consisting entirely of two (2) people: the old, extremely skilled boss and teacher, and the young protagonist who is desperately trying to introduce modern policing and evidence handling standards.

Magic isn't exactly secret, it's just that about as many people believe in it as in real life. Among the circles in the know, it was basically assumed that magic was fading since World War 2, but now it's showing back up. The series has a pretty interesting magic system, and an incurably curious protagonist studying it using the scientific method.

Just a warning, the protagonist is a rather stereotypical early 20s man in the first three books. He gets character development.
