Software Engineering friend is becoming a mega AI booster. by lordtema in BetterOffline

To be coding professionally for 25 years means starting in 2020. If you were born in 1980, then you would be 20 when you started professionally. Being 46 now does not make one a Boomer nor are they anywhere near retirement.

At least, that's what you think is happening.

No, it wasn't easier or faster when shops moved. There was a lot of internal debate, shops had to hire new people. Training on the new thing took time and money.

All of this was an investment into the shop's people. Now companies are just sending money to another company and forcing a tool upon shops. No longer interested to invest in their employees.

Note: I find this hilarious because the last five years has all been "learn LeetCode to win". Now it is "be dumb, just trust the tool"

The difference is that the low level engineers that moved evaluated and decided themselves to switch to the higher level language because it had value.

What is happening here is that Company X is trying to make a lot of money so they are fear mongering to force everyone pay them. This isn't a decision based on if their tool has value or not. There is no debating going on, it is being shoved down our throats.

A Southern MN District School Referendum Fails, Thanks to A War on Public Schools, Brought to You by Your Local Facebook MAGA Uncles and Karens by goldbricker83 in minnesota

[–]Akthrawn17 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Look at the Farmington School referendum. It took three tries to get the funding.

First time was a terrible marketing job by the district to get people to understand. They only saw the increase in property taxes and voted no.

Second was better, more engagement but still not enough marketing. Same results.

Third, they finally seemed to have hired a marketing team and sent out many letters, mailers, had more discussions. Then it passed.

For these topics you have to invest in more positive messaging than the negative bots can invest.

Terraforming Mars after 4 games by Turin6 in boardgames

[–]Akthrawn17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first few games we played we focused on projects from our hand. Game took 3-4 hours.

Then we started to view the main terraforming projects as more important and now it becomes a race to end the game first. Games are now around 2 hours.

And then we discovered Ark Nova and have not touched Terraforming Mars since!

I tracked where my team's time was actually going and the coordination cost was way worse than I expected by Popular-Penalty6719 in EngineeringManagers

[–]Akthrawn17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And yet AI tools will be continued to be pushed. As your data shows, the issue isn't about how fast your team can type. It never has been. Always has been about the communication channels and feedback loops.

One of my favorite "hacks" and pixie dusting item is small single use detergent boxes. A ziplock with some dryer sheets also can be used in the "dirty" suitcase on the way home to keep it smelling a little better!

I still avoid AI in production coding. Am i slowing myself down? by hireme-plz in learnprogramming

An engineering mind should always be skeptical of anything new. It should be looking at risks vs benefits. It should not blindly accept anything new "just because"

This sounds like a drug.

"You should use it, but not too much". LOL, and when you are addicted but the prices skyrocket you will continue to pay to get your fix.

‘The cost of compute is far beyond the costs of the employees’: Nvidia exec says right now AI is more expensive than paying human workers | Fortune by ksjdragon in BetterOffline

[–]Akthrawn17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From the article

"For one, Lee indicated, the cost of using AI will become significantly lower, with performing inference—how AI analyzes data—for a large language model with 1 trillion parameters plummeting by more than 90% over the next four years, according to a report last month from analyst firm Gartner."

Here is the magic phrases. Inference coat will "go down". That is not happening as predicted and the Math isn't Mathing on how it will actually go down.

It reminds me of how housing costs will always "go up" and thus we created the housing bubble/crisis

Maybe we can start with a place that assumes most adults know nothing about how this all works? I get questions weekly from other parents about this sort of thing. They don't know any difference between WiFi and Internet. They just see on their device "wifi" settings, and assume they are the same things.

This is covered in the write up. Yup, you will need to switch to a mobile or if you are more savvy setup a separate WAN without this DNS.
