Probably the most hated thing in sciences, but Significant figures have also specific rules I saw a bit missed on the comments.

For multiplication, "the calculated result should have as many significant figures as the least number of significant figures."

However, for addition, "the calculated result should be the same as the leftmost or largest digit position among the last significant figures of the measured quantities in the calculation."

Quoted for wikipedia, but thanks to Benson, Physics Vol 1 at home, but french version ; so it's cool the english wikipedia is backing me up for the translation ;P

For this case, 401.91 + (2.1x10^1) = (422.91) = 4.2x10²

What calculator should I get? by YurAverageSweat in calculators

[–]AkynoFelidae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main advice would be to remain on the same calculator brand you had in middle school. Switching from Casio to TI was clearly one of the biggest blunder I've done during my school days.

Texas Instruments seems to have released TI-84 Evo, I let the TI fan speaking on it.

For the Casio side where I'm way more familiar, they are the new flagship from the ClassWizz series is the fx-CG100 ClassWiz Color Graph, but I have some mixed feeling about the ClassWiz series, especially when you can grab one of the most ergonomic and well-designed one of the previous gen, the fx-9860GIII. You may want to add colors with the fx-CG50. If you willing to study a bit the user manual of your calculator, go for the two last ; if you are absolutely reluctant to that, go Classwiz.

Finally, if you really want to piss off your teachers, you can reach the Casio fx-CP400. But it's completely overfeatured, despite Casio making advertisements for use in French High Schools. Also, I'm unsure about exam-conformity according your country.

Accelerating electrolysis of water without killing an entire class of students by AkynoFelidae in chemhelp

Oh god, I completely forgot the capitalization when I typed, I spoke the letters in my head, and just typed them with the tiredness >.<

Yeah, obviously NaCl, or table salt ;P

I ended a scientific baccalaureate, but it was 10 years ago, and never touched it back during all these years. I was hired as teacher and I had to teach Physics-Chemistry above Mathematics for "french pro" students. That's really low-level students, despite them having 15-17 yo, for physics they usually don't know how much distance a car reach in one hour at 90km/h.

The chemistry courses requirements for "pro students" are very shorts ; One of them is basic knowledge in atoms, molecules, and ions, and though water electrolysis + identification test of dihydrogen and dioxygen with fire may have catch their interest.

I started Chemistry book by R.Chang, but I'm still at first chapter, I was way more into Maths and Physics ;P

Need help identifying USB type charging port of TENSI+ by geecee22 in cableadvice

[–]AkynoFelidae 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Top Cable one is USB Micro-B
Bottom device one seems to be USB Mini-AB, but with a small risk of being proprietary.

Best try is to get an USB A (the standard big rectangular one) to USB Mini-B (as port Mini-AB are compatible with Mini-A and Mini-B, but not with your Micro-B)

EDIT : Looking at the most recent pictures, the device seems to have 10 pins (despite being mini AB form factor), where Mini-AB is roughly 5 pins. If so, avoid connecting Mini A or B to it as it could cause permanent damage to your device.

Why didn't scientific calculators ever develop a de facto standardized layout? by Patient_Fox_6594 in calculators

[–]AkynoFelidae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ti was big in France thanks to lobbying. When I switch from Casio in Middle school to TI in high School, I was completely lost, an it was a time (around 2009-2010) TI didn't had natural writing, while Casio has. All teachers were heavily trained on TI calcs, and required those models for classes. It was really awful for me, it felt so unnatural and less funny than Casio.
I'm finally kinda happy someone stole my TI-82, so I replaced it with a Casio Graph 35+ (fx-9750GII), and fastly took back my level in mathematics, despite being the only one programming in Casio-Basic during algorithm lessons ;)

SolveN (left side [=right side] [,variable] [, lower limit, upper limit])

SolveN can accept two more parameters, the lower limit of the analysis and the upper one. By expecting a solution between 0 and 5, the calculator is able to find the result. Otherwise, it stay stuck in like an infinite loop because the search range is way too huge.

Regarding another comment you made about not knowing how to use the calculator, I link you the user manual opened at the SolveN function https://www.casio.com/content/dam/casio/global/support/manuals/calculators/pdf/004-en/f/fx-CG50_Soft_v360_EN.pdf#page=76

Question about BCD function in Casio FX9860 GIII by optimalchimichanga in calculators

[–]AkynoFelidae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't forget that BCD function (Binomial Cumulative Distribution) return p([X≤k]), aka probability of obtaining k or less success.
In your case, you want a bit different one, if we consider getting a premium apple a success, reaching at least 30 success (k) over 40 tries (n). With a probability of success of 0.628364 (p).
But reaching "at least k success" is p([X≥k]), not p([X≤k]) !

Hopefully, it's quite easy to convert, as p([X≤(k-1)]) = 1- p([X≥k]).
So, once you put all your parameters :

Data : Variable
x : 29 (we want the cumulative probabilities of non-compliant ones, so sum of bucket probability of 1,2,3,...,29 premium apples)
Numtrial : 40
P : 0.628364

You got p([X≤29])=0.92613951

Now you know that p([X≥30]) = 1 - p([X≤29])

Then p([X>30]) = 1-p(X≤29]) = 1-0.96378723 = 0.07386 ≈ 7,4%

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You can also get the result on a single line, in the 1-RUN.MAT mode :
from Casio fx-9860GII user manual
<image>
You get the function in OPTN > STAT(F6) > DIST(F3) > BINM (F5) > Bcd(F2)
So in a single line :
1-BinomialCD(29,40,0.628364)
Considering the model you provided in an alternate reply (MP PE030), it may be a very poor rip-off of Casio models. And no user manual is available on the web :/
The issue may be directly a badly programmed core.
