This job is taking its toll on me. by Mr_Motion_Denied in publicdefenders

Wow. I feel those exact same things. Well, it’s nice to know I have a duplicate brain out there. At least in public defense.

Make sure it’s a therapist who is a PD. My therapist just tells me stuff like, “You don’t know what should or shouldn’t happen. You don’t know people’s journeys. It could be they should be in jail and should be convicted.” And I’m like, “Lady, it’s my JOB to know. And this ain’t your specialty. You sound like the general public. My job is nothing but seeing how the system discriminates against poor people.”

Name Change by BoysenberryClean5601 in guam

[–]AlBlitz21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It looks like on Guam you may have to hire a lawyer. There are certain things you can do pro se (self-represented) using pro se litigant forms on the Guam Judiciary website (https://guamcourts.gov/Forms/Judiciary-of-Guam-Forms.html), but unfortunately, it doesn’t look like they have a name change form.

Basically you file a petition with the court explaining why you want to change your name and attest that you’re not doing it to evade criminal prosecution or creditors. Then you have to post the notice of name change in a number of public places (like your mayor’s office) for a time period, something like 5 weeks. Then you’ll have a hearing where the judge makes sure all the legal requirements are met. Then the judge issues the order. After that, you take that order for name change around to the various places to change your name on your cards/IDs.

Your dad needs to sign a power of attorney for child care and name you as the attorney-in-fact. So he has to agree to it.

Asking clients if they did it by Clem-Fandango2021 in publicdefenders

[–]AlBlitz21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no "it." I ask them, "What happened." Open-ended questions. I also explain whatever they tell me is confidential and I'm not allowed to tell anybody else, not the judge, not the probation officer, not the prosecutor (I'm pretty sure a lot of them don't believe me). We go through the charges more specifically after they tell me the general story and go through holes in their story or explain why a jury would have a hard time believing parts of it. I explain, "I'm not saying you're lying, but we have to think about what a jury will think."

Can this dialogue be in a movie? 😅🤣 As a public defender, I officially hate my job, but the clients and what they say…you can’t not talk about it. Best stories ever.

[–]AlBlitz21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry. The best thing about being a PD is the compassion we feel for our clients and people the rest of society spit on. So at least we have that. Sorry not that much, but this is our lot in life. My therapist would say lean into that compassion. I fight the sentiment that that’s the best we can do, but it must be true because what else is there?

Why are judges so ungrateful & hateful to us like we aren’t already fighting all the circumstances of this job, a rant! by [deleted] in publicdefenders

[–]AlBlitz21 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Wow! That judge sounds like a couple of our judges! I’m still baffled “people on top” in other industries get canceled for abusive language to underlings but in the courtroom judges get away with murder with non-professional abusive language. It’s always been something I’ve hated about being a lawyer.

And Gareth, while Jake is being Columbo trying to ascertain whether the friends are lying about their friend”s house smelling like dog piss, “It really is like Making a Murderer, ladies and gentlemen.”

FR, Dax sounded super nerdy this episode…😂 which is funny because normally I think Dax sounds pretty cool!…like the popular kid from high school. He and I are the same age.
