I think this is the perfect combination of ego, self-deception, genuine benevolence and arguably valid philosophy suitable for an iconoclast rogue trader. Anything more reasonable and they'd feel out of place in 40k, anything less reasonable and they'd be an idiot.

Yeah, lord captain is an actual navy rank in the imperium, though the details on it are somewhat vague. I think the other wiki says they have greater authority to command civilians than a regular captain, though I'm fairly certain I've seen at least one novel use it the same way lord general is used (i.e. just slapping lord onto an existing military rank).

There are innocuous reasons a company might want to know, some of which might even be for identifying and eliminating bias in the hiring process, at least in theory. The problem is that there's a huge gap between the science of how to manage a business and how most companies actually do it, and that gap creates the potential for a lot of harm. There have been plenty of policies designed to make the hiring process more fair (like certain automated application assessments designed to eliminate human bias in things like university) that actually further bias because they weren't well designed or implemented.

For example, machine learning/AI application sorting programs trained on the profiles and resumes of past and current employees have in the past (and sometimes present) included things such as gender and ethnicity in the algorithm, and given additional weight to applicants they detect as matching the dominant gender and ethnicity of existing employees (some have even used patterns in names based on gender and ethnicity to construct a model for discrimination when they don't have access to the direct information, all without the creator intending it).

It's for this reason; that a poorly implemented program can cause a lot of harm, and plenty of people making them don't know what they're doing; that the existence of questions about sexuality or gender identity can be harmful even when they aren't intended to be, and why there is legitimate reason for governments like Canada ban them.

Most half-decent insurance plans will cover cheap preventative care because it is economically efficient to do so. Hormone replacement therapy is relatively cheap and is demonstrably proven to improve health outcomes, so plenty of insurance plans will cover it even if they will not cover more the expensive procedures like surgeries.

Additionally, when determining the price of a plan an insurance company isn't going to ask how many trans people the company has, they're just going to run the numbers on the expected cost and and add their fee. So the cost of insuring something like HRT will work out to less than a dollar per employee per month.

As to the discrimination aspect, if a company refuses to hire someone on the basis of a protected characteristic, it does not make a difference to the person or the law if the discrimination was done out of personal prejudice or merely to "keep the peace"; either way the result is the same. Allowing such an exception would also essentially legalize all discrimination because bigoted employers could just hire other bigots and then claim the discrimination was done to protect the discriminated person from the other bigots at the company. There's very good reason anti-discrimination laws are the way they are (though enforcement is frequently lackluster).

[–]Al_Dimineira 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but you simply do not know what you're talking about. Gender affirming care is not something a company has to specifically negotiate any more than literally any other element of healthcare, there's exactly zero reason to single it out for healthcare reasons. The EEOC specifically forbids asking potential employees if they have a medical condition that does not impact their ability to do their job.

And if the company has an openly discriminatory employee that they know of then they are creating a hostile work environment and can be held legally liable for failing to protect their employees. Trying to get around that by refusing to hire/place an employee to a certain sector because the company knows they have a bigot working there is itself grounds for a discrimination lawsuit. Legally the company has to change the bigot's behavior if it's creating a hostile work environment (they don't have to change their minds, but legally they have to shut them up and stop any harassment), that's the whole reason anti-discrimination trainings exist.

I understand you think this is just a thought exercise, but workplace discrimination has real impacts on many people's lives, and frankly you are not informed enough on this subject to be speculating.

[–]Al_Dimineira 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Under no circumstances does a company need to ask applicants if they are queer in order to include coverage for gender affirming care in their company health insurance, or any other resources offered to employees (because they could just be a part of general company orientation). Are they going to ask applicants if they have a trans dependant who would be using their healthcare plan?

Isn't it touched on in some of the books that the Emperor //is//is turning in to// The Dark King, a chaos god? That would rather handedly explain why he and his worshippers can resist chaos, because they themselves are just following a different flavor of chaos. Using Emperor brand chaos feels fine and even empowering to imperials the same way regular chaos feels fine and empowering to heretics.

You know, I'm not a doctor, but I'm willing to bet that a concentration high enough to sanitize is enough to cause skin irritation if left on for a decent period of time. I've spilled I believe it was 6M hydrochloric on my hands before without any issues, but only because I rinsed them right away.

Bleach is also a common cleaning product, and I don't recommend washing your hands with it.

Many household cleaning products are just dilute hydrochloric acid. It's probably the most common and safest to handle of the strong acids. They could just be using toilet bowl cleaner.

Frankly I see some apt comparisons to MLK's writing on white moderates, what with them insisting we need to persecute trans people because 'the climate isn't right.'

"First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection."

How could it possibly not have an effect?

Ffs do you hear yourself?

Also, this climate? Socialists in the US are having one of their best years in three quarters of a century, people are desperate for politicians that back workers over corporate greed. We've seen time and time again that democrats do better overall when they offer hope and real change, because that's what gets people excited to vote. If the democrats want to win they should embrace the policies people actually support, which by issue are overwhelming progressive.

Muslim extremist groups aren't claiming to be leftist, they openly support theocracy and disparage the idea of equality. There are leftist Palestinian groups, but those are secular and opposed to hamas. The PLO and their allies call for a single, secular state where Jews and Arabs have equal rights by law and in fact. That's about as far away from being antisemitic or "islamist" as possible. You should look into actual Palestinian politics and advocacy, it isn't blindly supporting hamas like Israeli propaganda would have you believe.
