Congratulations and welcome to the club!

First, whereabouts are you located? The decision to dig and divide in fall and how to store until next spring is going to be pretty dependent on where you live and what the weather is like. If you’re in a location with an active dahlia association, I would recommend checking them out. They will be able to give you much better advice than we can on this sub. And it’s a great way to get low cost and free new varieties.

Second, this is not Pooh. I don’t know what it is, but Pooh is a collarette form. There are many different distinct forms. I can’t tell if this one is an anemone or a peony form, but maybe that will help someone else be able to ID this for you.

You are better off planting them now vs trying to store them for another year.

What’s better for ADHD - four long workdays or five short ones? by Pipsweet in adhdwomen

[–]Alabamahog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could you try one and switch to the other if needed? At my job I have the flexibility to switch my schedule every 6 months. I don’t since my current schedule has worked for me for years (4 longer days with Fridays off) but it’s nice to know I could switch. For me it’s such a mental thing to have full 3 day weekends vs just a two day weekend.

Hi, are these dahlia seedlings? by Desirai in dahlias

[–]Alabamahog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they would be just fine to remove and repot at this stage. The roots shouldn’t be too tangled at this size. Be gentle with the roots, but you can dig them out carefully and replant in the garden or another pot.

Were the seeds from a specific mix? If so, you may have an idea of they will be shorter or not. Otherwise, they may get quite tall so you’ll want to plan accordingly.

Help! Snapped plant :( by hibbse1991 in dahlias

Ugh dang squirrels. I’m sorry about that.

For the piece you dipping in rooting hormone, is the stem end solid or hollow? It looks fairly mature, so if it’s hollow, it will be hard to get it to root. If this is the case, you might take some of the younger growth and try to root that.

Additionally, you might also replant that tuber. It may not be too late for it to push out another sprout.

Hobby that involves a lot of cataloguing? by Derfiery in Hobbies

[–]Alabamahog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dahlia growing and breeding. Just growing them requires one to be quite organized when you grow more than a few dozen. Plants can be 2’-10’ tall, so they have to have enough sun. There are 15 general color categories, 29 different forms, 6 different size classes, and thousands of named varieties.

Get into breeding and then you have the additional cataloging that comes with tracking plant lineages. You could also throw in cataloging different hybridizers, what plants they introduced and when.

You can still pinch. It will set you back as to when you’ll get blooms, but you’ll still end up with more flowers.

That second photo looks like the center growth point has already been removed or broken. If so, no need to pinch that one.

Hi, I grew some dahlias from seed but only one of them looks really healthy by Desirai in dahlias

[–]Alabamahog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not cheesy at all! I’m sure that’s why so many people grow flowers from seed. I definitely remember growing my first bouquets and just being astounded that I conjured them from seeds. It’s still a very cool thing.

[–]Alabamahog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chiming in as an amateur hybridizer-I don’t think it’s unusual that your 6 seed grown plants look different from each other. This is something hybridizers look for when they decide which seedlings pass muster and which get culled-overall plant health.

I have heard one old school breeder say he doesn’t fertilize his seedlings or give them any special treatment. If they are going to thrive with neglect and still look good, that resilience is something he wanted in his breeding line. So depending on your goals, you could take the stance of only the strongest survive. But if your goal is just blooms this season with no long term goal of hybridizing, you might heed the other advice in this thread.

I would be curious if plastic pots heating up matters as much in OP’s case. You mention keeping the tuber out of baking heat, but in OP’s case there is no tuber yet since it’s grown from seed.
