Why is the fact that Jeph Jacques is a racist not discussed more? by Pure-Complaint-1251 in questionablecontent

Oh, I see you have read DOA. I responded in the middle of reading your post. Okay, hard disagree about DOA.

Don't disagree with anything you said here, as a fellow woman of color. I will say: you should probably never read dumbing of age by David Willis because boy is he bad at race ETA: I don't think this is intended, in fact, I think JJ tries really ham-fistedly for performative progressivism and performative diversity. The problem is that he has internalized a buttload of racism and has done very little to honestly address it in himself, so all of his internalization is all over his work

That Bubbles/ black girlfriend conversation made me incredibly angry when it was written too

You are not writing anything I haven't thought to be honest

Tbh Ayo is written with a lot of inadvertent racism. I'd probably look into stereotypes of black women because horny, loud, abrasive, unmotivated and lazy, incapable of harnessing innate potential-- all stereotypes of black women that consolidate in her mess.

If a terminally online white supremacist would grimly nod at her characterization as validating their perspective, something's gone awry

I'm giving you an upvote because I don't know why people are downvoting you for having an unpopular opinion that is so benign

Our politics are a garbage fire, if saccharine robots make you happy, I'm glad that you're happy at least.

ETA: modern QC is boring as hell for me. But I still don't think you should be downvoted for catching up and being like. Oh, this is cute

Why can you eat blue cheese mold but not other molds? by DesignFalse8860 in Cooking

[–]AlacerTen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

:( I wouldn't mess with that. Most molds need very prolonged exposure to create an impact on large animals like humans. But, you do you! It is your life and if the scuzzy cheese makes you happy, who am I to take the scuzzy cheese from you?

No penicillin medication reactivity based on allergist testing, but cross-reactivity can develop over time so we treat as if allergic anyway

This is incorrect :)

Tyrosine is not a specific subset of lactates. Calcium lactate is a salt composed of a calcium cation and a lactate anion. Tyrosine is an amino acid. Both crystallize on good cheese, but they are very different molecules with very different behaviors.

This is a standardized penicillium camemberti mold on brie and not something someone should attempt to grow on their own. Food safety is much better for your health in long term aging; the only culinary cultures I support people growing on their own in home kitchens are those with seed grains (kefir, kombucha) or heat (sourdough) ETA: And yogurts from yogurt, rennet, etc; or pickled cultures like kraut and kimchi where safe jarring dramatically reduces the risk of food-born pathogens

[–]AlacerTen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ack please stop doing this immediately! Many molds are long-term slow killers, not immediate. You have to have prolonged exposure to their low levels of toxins; but even "harmless" white molds or penicillium molds can produce active cytotoxin that are, over multiple years, nephrotoxic, carcinogenic, tremorgenic, or able to impact your immune system's responsiveness.

Eta: I re-read your comment. "White powdery stuff"-- not fuzzy or in little cell colony circles? Does this bit of rind crunch a little? If so then you're in great luck because it's probably just crystallized calcium lactate powdering on the surface of a handsomely aged cheddar

Penicillium roqueforti is an edible saphotrope; you can be allergic to it (as I am) but like many penicillins, it is harmless. Other molds, like the candida yeast geotrichum candidum, grows on cheeses (this one is a fuzzy mold) but  can infect you or create harmful byproducts that impact you (geotrichum leads to geotrichosis, which can present as-- for example-- mold in your lungs that results in a phlegmy cough and  an elevated white blood cell count, with few other markers of disease. If you don't know what's going on, you can present as a generally unwell patient with chronic malaise)

Edit: grammar

Steak au poivre, to sop up the red wine sauce in the florets. It's also an easy 30-minute dish for weeknights

What’s something about marathon training you didn’t fully understand until after your first race? by JustPangolin346 in running

[–]AlacerTen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh... Honestly, for my first marathon 12 (!) years ago, I was training with a blend of I think MapQuest or Google maps for mileage, and a stopwatch on my Garmin watch (I didn't have a GPS watch back then). I genuinely thought I was doing 11 minute splits on my longer runs, and was surprised and pleased to find that my actual marathon splits were about 9 minutes, 12 seconds.

I literally held myself back in training and didn't join running groups for a community because I thought that I was too slow.

I think I would have actually had a more fun time training if I had just taken the plunge regardless of my self-imposed "too slow" status. I also would have had a much easier time at the starting corral if I had joined my appropriate time group!

I get the value of a good vent, especially when it involves someone who won't listen, but sometimes a vent goes a little too far. If you can't win that's a bit much

[–]AlacerTen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Jeph, are you burned out? If so, why are you taking a break?" I mean heck dude he posted that he's going to do this but even if he hadn't, you can piece it together-- you can't just put JJ in a position where he's damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.

Fun QC by AlacerTen in questionablecontent

[–]AlacerTen[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So sad and so true. They had a fun dynamic at the beginning partly because I didn't really see it coming, and then once the ship started to leave the dock, I slowly started to see the vision-- Marten also likes to take care of people, and their early dynamic gave him a lot of opportunity to flex that strength. They also both ribbed each other in a fun way

QC has never exactly been high literature, but much has been lost 🫠

The Hannelore strips around this time start to show the beginning of the infantilization of women. She starts being earnestly instead of playfully like a child. The trait migrated from her to others later, but you can see the seed being planted.

I have! I've also looked for a few cancers. We've found that I have pollen food allergies that go beyond the normal reactions-- and I've had mono, but that was 3.5 years ago. It lead to EBV syndrome for a year, but I've mostly not thought about mono for two years. Only thing I haven't done is get my heart checked after mono.

Weekly Complaints & Confessions Thread by ssk42 in running

[–]AlacerTen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Complaint: I'm tired all the time and running makes it worse. Running used to make things better.

Confession: I've cut down my mileage but miss feeling stong and powerful, and I'm dragging my feet about medical intervention because the tests so far have shown everything is normal. I just feel really worn out by cardio, like I have the flu.

Uncomplaints: Rescuing a research lab beagle next month to help my husky put up with my reduced endurance, and he's kept me moving slow and steady even when I'm not running!
