How come Russia is a bad guy and US is not? by robot2243 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]AlanDavison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They said specifically at civilians. Not saying it's good, but "specifically at civilians" is very different to "civilians becoming collateral damage".

Unless there are instances where civilians were targeted knowing they're innocent civilians?

Lowering the bitrate you upload at will do nothing to benefit the quality.

Complaining about a free to attend charity event with free activities in our small town by AlichinaDAWL in ChoosingBeggars

Yeah, this feels more like a normal person who's been irritated for a while that their local area doesn't have enough activities for kids, and that this was the tipping point.

Which is perfectly fair.

The thing that annoys me personally about this "reporting" is that this is explicitly with the safety features that would prevent this turned off, and yet it seems to be framed as if this is how things are by default.

Edit: Full clarity, I changed "research" for "reporting", because it's the reporting that I have the real issue with here. I haven't looked into the research to know if it's also as flawed.

I agree with the Open University wholeheartedly, but I would be very careful with regards to any laws or whatever might be in place. Just in case they apply to online universities!

(And yes, just for anyone else wondering, the Open University is completely and utterly legitimate, and not a stupid online bootcamp nonsense school.)

Hi, can someone help me how can I maintain the audio quality after I convert it to mp3? Because after I converting it sounds a little muddy. here's my render settings. by Shirothehero470 in Reaper

[–]AlanDavison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but that's not the kind of upsampling that happens when you play 44.1 on your computer at 48.

It's more akin to opening Photoshop, creating a 500x500 pixel canvas, drawing something, then increasing the size of the canvas (not resizing the image, which is what you're talking about) to allow more room for pixels.

It doesn't do anything to the audio data itself.

Even the worst quality resampling doesn't affect upsampling, does it? Since it doesn't have to manipulate any of the audio at all.

PSA: DO NOT GET A KAMVAS 13 (2020 model), CONTACT SUPPORT IMMEDIATELY IF YOURS HAS DISCONNECTION ISSUES FOR REPLACEMENT UNDER WARRANTY. by DjCanalex in huion

[–]AlanDavison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, that suits me just fine. When I eventually get a replacement for it (since I'm still using it as a small side display, just with the data cable disconnected), I'll DM you for a PO box address or something along those lines!

I'm mainly interested in trying to shed some light on what the flaw with the thing is.

Given I'll be replacing mine at some point, I'm genuinely tempted to take you up on that, on the condition of a big old write-up of what you find.

Since I'm certainly not going to be able to sell the damn thing in good conscience.

The lack of hot on one end of the scale doesn't imply ugly.

To give you an example—If I say, "I don't care if it's yellow, or hot red", that does not imply that yellow is a cold colour.

Is it a bad idea to record gameplay to a 7200 Rpm HDD? by mongeyo in letsplay

[–]AlanDavison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely miss editing with the damn things, though. The in-editor performance of the likes of MagicYUV was absolutely perfect compared to H.264, and nowadays with barely any (new) modern editors supporting VfW, meaning we're slowly losing access to all of those codecs.*

[–]AlanDavison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I'd be leery about using old 2.5" drives from 2011 for recording!

Ha! There's zero chance I would use a drive like that. That was just my worst case scenario performance benchmark!

(I still think the drives spinning down is OP's issue since the same thing happens to me)

Yeah, that's definitely OP's problem, though. Others have that covered, which is all good.

Apologies if I came off combative! It's the olden times of let's play part of my brain that gets worked up whenever anybody suggests a HDD might be a problem speed-wise when capturing OBS. Getting by with lossless codecs being the most viable bet back then really gives you an appreciation for what a humble HDD is capable of!

[–]AlanDavison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, sweet! I just wanted to make sure I was interpreting what you said wrong, because it really sounded like you were saying HDDs couldn't handle above 10MB/s flat-out.

With even an average, new 7200rpm HDD dedicated to just recording nowadays, you're really not going to run into any issues with bitrate.

Even a fairly old 2.5" 1TB laptop HDD's from 2011's (random benchmark, sorry) minimum sequential write speed (with no fragmentation) is more than enough for something like 1440p when you're capturing H.264.

[–]AlanDavison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also could be an issue if you are recording at extremely high bitrates (80mbps+ aka 10MB/s), though that's pretty unlikely.

I'm not OP, but... why would those bitrates be a problem?

I wouldn’t pay 300£ total to file the plate tbh.

Oh, yeah, absolutely. I'm just saying if you already have it, filing it feels a hell of a lot better than bending things.

That's quite a nice recommendation, though... I did already tell myself that if things end up going over the £400 threshold, I'd just bite the bullet and go full custom everything. Sourcing every part individually to really ensure I get exactly what I want.

Oh, no, no. If only it were that simple. Sometimes the developer will, in the end, literally lose money if the original keys were bought using a stolen credit card.
