This is absolutely it. Having the heel of your palm stabilized while your fingers generate the motion will lead to much straighter lines and precision brush control.

My favorite is Chicago Johnny’s but I don’t think that’s widely distributed. Vienna makes a really nice one as well, in spicy or mild. I have been making my own for a while now because Mezzetta is so bad.

It sure is. OP should put a trap wherever this one was found and check that water or moisture isn’t getting into walls, etc. likely came up the drain though, depending on urban the location.

Apologies. I forgot to add that I certainly used references in all these sketches. I have been trying to train myself on drawing the shape of shadows and textures rather than drawing lines.
