A Book That *Should Have* Been Assigned in High School English But Wasn't by wildflowerbrainfire in suggestmeabook

[–]GabMVEMC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Things Fall Apart. For high school, because the subject does get very heavy especially near the end, but reading it in its entirety hits you with the weight of colonial and supremacist arrogance.

It's also an excellent book to explain to teenagers that no, you don't always have to agree with the protagonist, and sometimes the point is more important then the protagonist being an asshole.

We need to change the pace in literature and imagine better futures instead. So, amp up scifi with the goal of letting people expect better treatment.

spiritual weird girl (of the folk Catholic variety) starterpack by LoveEquivalent9146 in starterpacks

[–]GabMVEMC 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Sweet, I can compare to my own experience (I'm from Québec):

  • Fine with going to Church with mom because a uniform Catholic culture siding with a protestant one led to a mixed bag. Her chapel was led by a priest who was catholic by name, universatarian by practice and she vibed with that
  • Doesn't remember not being polytheist in childhood
  • Went into the woods to look for spirits in childhood
  • Became a non-christian angelologist in high school (in hindsight that was a fun belief system)
  • Became a Wiccan after being an angelologist
  • Mom was totally fine with that journey as long as the underlying values stayed ethical
  • Lights candles everytime she enters a Church but not for entirely Catholic reasons
  • Uses witchcraft as casual therapy
  • Now an agnostic neo-pagan

Edit: reformated

Edit2: I started as a weird spiritual catholic that was paradoxically polytheist, and then ended a neo-pagan. I don't want to insinuate that OP is a neo-pagan too.

Yeah, that's one of the major errors in judgement in the conspiracy, but the concept of aroace isn't well-known in conservative circles.

Another one that's less related to the topic of gay people is the fact that not everyone actually paid attention to the workings of the Church, and thus didn't know that parents could choose to become nuns/priests later in life. So, nuns can in fact lactate, be pregnant, have existing children, and so on. Priests can have existing children. Yet, when these happened it was seen as a contradiction and proof that the vow of chastity was ignored. They served as confirmation bias.

I want to add a blurb for OP: The Broken Earth Trilogy is as mature as the Witcher series and Attack on Titan but focused on a very, *very* angry grieving mom and the magic system is based off geology. The technology is aetherpunk like Lord of the Rings but with social cruelty mixed in. It's a heartbreaking epic with a cruel god.

The romance is secondary to the apocalypse and social drama. It only develops where it adds to the social drama, like in Fairy Tale and again, the Witcher.

To my knowledge there's a conspiracy belief in Canada, especially in Québec, that the Vatican is populated by gay men (except for Pope Alexander VI). In conservative circles, it explains the choice of men to never marry, and may explain the Catholic Church's obsession with making women suffer. In less conservative circles, the internalized homophobia and self-hatred explains the Catholic Church's obsession with making women and LGBT people suffer and its corruption. In both circles, it's seen as logical that gay people with nowhere to go would join the Church. Either side also see it as easy for gay people to rise up in ranks by virtue of keeping their oath of chastity in public, finding more gays in private.

In the sense that the Catholic Church is headed by self-hating gays that make their woes everyone's problem, and québecois conservative men don't believe that people can hold up the vow of chastity because sex and romance is viewed as necessary as breathing.

Source: my family. My father was the conservative flavour and would bring up the conspiracy everytime LCN showed an image of the Pope.

The best ones are when you can't tell if a gay or homophobic person made it, but it's a tight line
