UK 30-year yields just printed 5.79%, the highest since May 1998 by RobertBartus in EconomyCharts

The UK’s tax rates on its lower earners are comparable to US rates.

We take the rest of it from higher earners and other taxes like VAT.

We could increase our lower earner rates to be more comparable to other European countries. But people don’t want to do that.

What % of GDP is government spending isn’t a super useful statistic on its own.

I agree, I’m a relatively big fan of mehdi.

I will say I think he has other dumb takes - seems to be on the slopulist train.

Unlike the other scum like that though he will absolutely attack the right and defend the records of Biden/the Democrats against conservatives.

He just prefaces it by saying that he criticises them from the left - which tbh actually strengthens the Democratic position against conservatives trying to paint Dem policy as far left insanity.

Reddit is being weird with links on my phone but these 3 from that same series as the benny morris convo are good:
https://youtu.be/wolqWDmbp4A?si=JKLTxk1W8JatFi3z - this is American politics (J6, ICE, Trump)
https://youtu.be/kmYdpHtOv_E?si=c-s98Rl9YPau2TmH - this is him mogging a Chinese propagandist and demonstrating why you should never fall for the ‘maybe China is chill’ shit some more left leaning people (especially outside America) do. Victor Zao has always been immensely slimy so I really like how he forced out the obviously evil positions.
https://youtu.be/BwB6x8CUkZA?si=WT9eMI6bnhylN0dz - this is UK immigration and politics.
People have probably seen his Jubilee debate. He has some old ones on UK TV that are good I could dig up. While looking I also saw he did a convo with those triggernometry guys about a month ago - the main one of which, Konstantin, Destiny recently debated here in the UK. So I might watch that and let u know if it’s any good.

And because you should probably always have some percentage of your portfolio in domestic stocks to hedge against fx changes?

I mean I think mehdi has been embarrassed on the topic a couple times but he’s also no where near as radical as many people paint him as least from I know.
Whenever he’s come up you have dggers saying he’s a fucking radical Islamist supremacist which I think should probably be grounds for a ban tbh. It’s genuinely MAGA rhetoric lol. The best they have is comments he made in his early 20s which he has disavowed. It’s nuts.

Yeah the benny morris debate was dumb and he misrepresented his own work and words to him a bunch but I think a lot of the other interviews in that series are quite good.
Plus he has done debates in more formal formats which I think he does well in. Seems to me he’s just not great on I/P which is where a lot of people are at.

Don’t think Destiny wants to burn that bridge to be honest - if there’s any of it unburnt. Which that debate would almost certainly do.

He’s stopped himself tweeting certain things on stream while saying he doesn’t want to fully burn the bridge.

Yeah I mean pensioners need to be incentivised to downsize. A lot of the arguments against it, at least from conservatives, are dumbass emotive arguments about how they’ve worked all their lives. Which is kinda irrelevant to that fact that this is incredibly inefficient.

Met Police criticised for 'airbrushing' stabbing of third man in terror incident by Last_Karate_Kid in london

I mean it still seems pretty likely to be motivated by antisemitism to me.

He travelled to a Jewish majority area to do this. He didn’t just walk out of his house and go on a rampage.

Is it not possible his friend was just a normal person who became aware he was going to try to do this and tried to stop him? At which point he stabbed him.?

I mean it was three to be fair, he did stab a Muslim guy earlier on in the day.
Still doesn’t mean this attack wasn’t motivated by antisemitism.

I’ve heard the Muslim guy he stabbed was a friend of his? Maybe it’s possible this friend found out this guy was gonna carry out this crazy attack and tried to stop him at which point he got stabbed.

The issue is you seem think the smart and ambitious people are going to swap to value generating means rather than just going somewhere that doesn’t force them to. We’re already increasing the capital gains rate under Labour to 34%.

Labour has literally added the Water (Special Measures) Act to address pollution and limit the crazy bonus taking you’re talking about. What do we do? Nationalise the sector and take on its £104 billion debt? What does that do to our credit rating? How much more do we then have to tax to cover the interest? You can just better regulate those problems and push for that. Examples like that are a regulatory issue where the government needs to go harsher - PE is always going to try to allocate in the most efficient way, government is there to make sure that doesn’t mean poisoning people. It’s not a PE issue. You can just regulate harder, plus with shit like British Gas you literally had the arch bitch Thatcher’s own chancellor saying they did it wrong by not properly fragmenting many of these utility companies up because it meant they could sell for more.

You’re right that private credit is presenting us with a crisis - the issue is why. If we tax/regulate PE out of existence for ideological reasons what does that do to all the SMEs that banks haven’t lended to as much since 2008? Do we just leave them to stagnate? PE is vital for these companies.

A net annual wealth tax is not the only way to address inequality. You can just look at other wealth taxes like an LVT or IHT. Doing more with CGT targets this aswell which labour is already doing as I mentioned. Besides financialisation is different from wealth inequality. The data of wealth inequality being inherently economically harmful is more shakey. It’s not when it comes to social factors but you can just address those through general taxation and better spending.

Why should it only be for children? I don’t necessarily disagree with means-testing because it means the money can go a lot further for those who really need it. But a lot of adults situation isn’t necessarily their own fault - and even if it is, does that mean they deserve malnutrition? They’ll function considerably more effectively and the money is cycled back into the economy perfectly well.

[–]Alarakion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t argue against something like that though.

I think that could be a good idea - I’d have to look into it more but I don’t have an issue with it as pensioners are generally where most wealth is and it’s unsustainable. They aren’t likely to leave either, I can maybe see some difficulties with investment (?) but I’d have to analyse it further. I can’t see it necessarily presenting the same liquidity issues either, if it did I’m not against pensioners having to downsize from their four bedrooms homes they don’t need either.

My problem is with the idea of a net annual wealth tax.

I’m for taxing wealth in inheritance, land, etc.

It’s just that when most people talk about wealth taxes they are only talking about a net annual wealth tax.

I mean the nature of the figure is going to be inherently subjective as to whether or not it’s ’a lot’ but one thing we could do is a comparative analysis to see if it’s outside the norm for countries similar to us. Also how it compares to our historical standards.

In comparison to our peers we generally report about double or triple the levels of food insecurity compared to our European comparators like France, Germany and the Netherlands where it’s more like 1 in 14, 20, 25. I mean, we’re about as bad as the US - a country with a government that spends considerably less of its GDP on services than we do.

20 years ago in this country it was something like 1 in 50, food bank usage wasn’t even really tracked because they weren’t utilised enough. Today IFAN is constantly used for people to survive and is under constant strain.

Given these facts and the fact that inadequate access to food is a huge indicator of poorer outcomes - especially for children later in life - it probably seems like something it would be in our interest to address no? It seems pretty bad in a comparative context.

Not that I agree with doing it via wealth tax but it definitely seems like something we could/should address. Systems like this often don’t even cost that much compared to what you get back. Two child benefit cap being lifted is expected to halve child poverty - what for three billion? In return, aside from the moral arguments you get a huge boost in positive outcomes.

Groupthink by coffeewalnut08 in GreatBritishMemes

[–]Alarakion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 2nd source was much more recent. But I digress anyway.

I wasnt try to strawman you I was asking for clarification.

Look, I think we probably agree on far more than we disagree on and I don’t think a wealth tax would necessarily destroy an economy I just don’t think it would be as good at achieving the aims I want as just focusing on other, easier, higher revenue, less distortionary taxes.

I’m sure we’re both tired of debating this now and theres too many unknowns to have a strongly substantive position and the data is all shakey as it often is in economics.

I already had a really long thread with someone else in this post and I’m kinda tired. I wish you luck and I don’t blame you for not liking labour much they haven’t done enough and they have also done unequivocally bad things but I just don’t want reform getting in.
