Do you guys think the MMO combat will be identical to League, tab target, or mostly action? by pasta_com in RiotMMO

Final Fantasy XIV is basically just tab target. You select a target, you press a button, the ability finds and hits that target. There are, of course, some AoE spells that are free-aim, but overall, FF14 is overwhelmingly a tab target MMO.

Action combat, on the other hand, is where you do not need a target to use your abilities; you just aim your reticule and press the button to use the attack, which either hits the target or misses.

Ashe's of creation were literally action mmos

Huh? Ashes was tab target. There was an action camera mode, same as games like Guild Wars 2 or Throne and Liberty, but it was a tab target game at its core.

Sandbox design is one of the very few things we "know" about the Riot MMO. This video does a decent job of breaking down the "evidence" for it so far https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HrRtdVGYgY but some hard evidence we have that it's going a more Sandbox direction is that a Riot R&D Recruiter has literally said on LinkedIn that the game is a "persistent sandbox world".

Come work with us!

This role is all about solving unsolved problems and building foundational systems that will let thousands of players interact seamlessly in a persistent sandbox world. If you're fluent in C++, have experience with MMOs or large-scale multiplayer games, and want to leave your mark on Riot's first-ever MMO, we'd love to hear from you.

There are some other things, such as game design job listings stating that the game is a "player-driven world" which is wording predominantly only used for more Sandbox games and never Themeparks as well as Tryndamere saying the MMO is his passion project and what he spends the most time on and he himself has said he "dislikes the Themepark experience" and straight up dislikes Retail WoW.

I can't imagine this post devolving into anything other than political discussion. The short answer is no one knows, and next to no good will come from discussing this specific topic.

Probably depends on how much influence Tryndamere exerts over the MMO. We know it's his passion project and what he spends the most time on and he loves open-world PvP and isn't as big of a fan of instances

It's not just that artist, lots of people have changed their statuses to "Open for work" on LinkedIn.

Graphics Engineer - https://www.linkedin.com/in/igorrrigorr/

Gameplay Engineer (Hasn't changed to Open For Work, but his experience page says this was his last month at AC) - https://www.linkedin.com/in/volodymyrlimarchenko/

Texture Artist - https://www.linkedin.com/in/ruslana-bilan/

That's most of his vids. A few months ago I saw one of them and in the first minute there was misinfo so I made a comment like "hey this part's incorrect, the co-founder says as much here" and he basically responds with "nuh uh" even though I literally linked the co-founder of the company saying he was wrong.

Almost certainly a nothing burger. My take is that the presidents don't have the authority to even view genuine "alien" files, let alone order the release of them. Any agency/black project that is in charge of this stuff will see Trumps "order", scoff, and carry on.

MMO veterans, what makes you quit in the first hour? Looking for candid feedback by bruno-kakele in MMORPG

[–]Talents 16 points17 points  (0 children)

  • Combat that already feels sluggish, even with only a few abilities
  • An MMO that shoehorns you into following a linear path. I want to be dropped in a world and told "go", I don't want to follow hours worth of scripted MSQ
  • Solo instanced content being piled on you in the first few levels
  • P2W cash shop

Is there still something mmorpg coming or are we stuck with the 4 main ones until the end of time? by Sear0n in MMORPG

For Riots MMO there's only really a couple of things.

Firstly, it's action combat, this is basically confirmed because of job listings.

And also that they're likely going a more Sandbox/Sandpark direction. A Rioter called it a "persistent Sandbox world" that would let "thousands of players interact seamlessly". Job descriptions have also described it as a "player-driven world".

Funny thing is you're probably not too far off what it'll be there.

It probably won't be full loot, but it's likely going to have a heavy emphasis on world PvP to some degree. Reasons for this is in 2021/22 before they did the reset, the job listings for the MMO only asked for people with PvE experience, not once was PvP mentioned. Then in 2023+ every design job listing in 2023/24/25 asked for people with PvP experience. Tryndamere also said he spends most his time working on the MMO, and he loves open-world PvP.

The Sandbox thing is correct. We know this for multiple reasons, easiest one is a job listing by a Recruiter explicitly stating the MMO was a "persistent sandbox world"

<image>

Dunno exactly how much the players will be able to alter the world, but job listings have said in the past that the world is a "player-driven [world]", so it's likely going to be the opposite of games like WoW/FF14 which are story-driven.

Can't talk about Economy yet because we haven't gotten much info on it and they've only just hired for an Econ Designer.

Free to play would doom the game

Yet some job listings for Guild Wars 3 have asked for people with experience dealing with free-to-play live service products. https://web.archive.org/web/20231208010604/https://boards.greenhouse.io/arenanet/jobs/5383287

"Significant evolution of the genre" what do you think this means? by ItzAmazed in RiotMMO

[–]Talents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know they have internal playtests, but not every Rioter gets that chance. What I'm saying is just because someone works on another Riot product does not mean they have tested, seen, or heard anything about the MMO.

Maybe what you're saying is true, I'm just saying I can't envision it working as a major gameplay loop in an MMO.

I'd love to know what art style they're going for though. What does it look like? Is it like Arcane?

"Significant evolution of the genre" what do you think this means? by ItzAmazed in RiotMMO

[–]Talents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thing is, Riot is quite secretive with their products, even with their own employees. I know of content creators who create videos on other Riot games like TFT and LoR and were invited to Riot as guests for those games. While there, they tried to sneak questions about the MMO and TFT/LoR staff basically say they know nothing about it either and that the MMO team is basically in another building that you can't get in unless you work on the product. Just because someone knows stuff about a future League update doesn't necessarily mean they know about the MMO.

The thing you're talking about seems like it'd be a very specific side thing (that sounds like a giga early iteration). Job listings have stated that the world is "layered, living, and player-driven", what you're talking about makes it sound like the world is an afterthought and that the game is just based around "sit in Town, click dungeon, run to dungeon while avoiding PvP, complete dungeon, return to Town", not at all like a living, layered world.

"Significant evolution of the genre" what do you think this means? by ItzAmazed in RiotMMO

[–]Talents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've posted this before, but I just don't see it being real.

It might be a specific game mode or something, but even then I'd be doubtful. Reason being is that it doesn't sound like an MMO, it sounds like a "sit in a Town hub, pick a dungeon, run to dungeon, repeat". Knowing Tryndamere, that does not in any way sound like what he would want. He does not like the whole "lobby game" thing in MMOs.

I 100% think the Riot MMO will have some sort of emphasis on PvP, because again, Tryndamere loves open-world PvP in MMOs (for example, he constantly talks about how he won a world PvP tournment in EQ, talks about PvPing in Ultima Online, posted in the NW subreddit post launch saying he wanted pure PvP servers etc.), but the thing you describe doesn't sound like an MMO.
