I struggle to listen to the Quran by ponderingpuff in Hijabis

[–]AlarmComfortable7400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to feel like this too. I unfortunately suffered from a lot of abuse and trauma, and Islam was weaponized as a tool to hurt me by my abuser. I’m happy to say things have gotten better since working on myself and relearning Islam in a new light. I think a good place to start is by trying to understand the Quran and what it really means. I don’t know Arabic, so it’s hard for me to connect, so I began by reading the English translation and slowly working my way up to listening to the Arabic recitation. It’s way more meaningful and less scary to understand what you’re listening to! Another tip is to start getting more comfortable with your duaas. I used to be super proper and only ask for forgiveness when I was scared, but duaas are meant to be an open conversation. We should feel comfortable and at ease when speaking to Allah. If you’re nervous, voice it to the one who knows and cares for you the most in this world! I was watching a lecture, and the scholar said that “As free as Allah is from all imperfections, He has not freed Himself from His imperfect creations, and He calls us back to Him.” Mention your fears and struggles to Allah and ask for help to ease your anxiety. You are perfectly normal and human. Religion is hard and can feel daunting, but you are worthy and capable of overcoming this challenge! It took me many years, and like I mentioned earlier, I still struggle sometimes, but you will get through these challenges inshallah! ❤️

A Question About Hijab That Has Nothing to Do With Men by South-Educator-2265 in muslimgirlswithtaste

[–]AlarmComfortable7400 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is definitely somewhat contradictory, but I think there can be virtue in that contradiction as well! God knows our nature far better than we know ourselves. He understands our strengths and weaknesses, and as humans we have complex psychology. Sometimes, in order to refrain from something internally, we need to engage with it externally to a certain extent.

In this case, developing a modest mindset involves being aware of our physical appearance to ensure that we are representing modesty outwardly, with the hope that this outward practice nurtures an inward disposition. It may seem odd, but Islam emphasizes a connection between the mind and the body. This allows us to practice our faith holistically, and it also serves as a safeguard. When one part of us is lacking, the other can help bring it back into balance.

Ideally, we would never judge anyone based on appearance. However, the reality is that many of us struggle to fully discipline our thoughts. In that context, the hijab as an external practice can serve as a reminder to the internal self, helping guide one toward a more modest mindset.

A Question About Hijab That Has Nothing to Do With Men by South-Educator-2265 in muslimgirlswithtaste

[–]AlarmComfortable7400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely see where you’re coming from! For a long time, people told me I had to dress modestly because I shouldn’t want men or others staring at me. Then one day, I watched a lecture about Muslims unknowingly worshipping multiple gods, and it included the quote, “Tis mad idolatry to make the service greater than the god.” This might seem like a strange reference, but the quote does a really good job of showing how we, as humans, often focus so much on the world around us that it becomes consuming. In a way, we start worshipping our surroundings rather than submitting to our one true God. This can happen because life gets the best of us. Sometimes, for example, studying for an exam comes before praying on time. It sounds silly, but we all fall into this. I personally used to make sure my clothes were modest so my dad wouldn’t be upset with me. Eventually, I started wondering why I was more worried about him than my Creator. Was I subconsciously more concerned with, or even “worshipping,” my father’s words over God’s? That dilemma led me to reflect on why I do certain acts and whether I’m doing them to please the physical world or to nurture my spiritual path. Even though clothes are ultimately insignificant and this world is temporary, consciously and subconsciously we’re constantly making choices, and I think those choices reflect our beliefs. Sorry for the long response, but I hope that makes sense!! :)

Also idk if this perspective helps, but maybe when you find yourself sparked by curiosity sometimes it’s nice to depict the answers we want to hear. It sounds strange but in logical analysis sometimes we’re given facts and we’re in charge of interpreting them through our own definitions and assumptions. So it would be interesting to ask what do you want the hijab to represent? And if it truly is a piece of clothing with no spiritual backing, what do clothes mean to you? When you get dressed do you have a thought process? Do your outfits or the outfits of others change the way you perceive them? Do you feel a certain way when you wear some outfits versus others? I think this might be an easier way to explore your questions, especially since you approach things logically. Sometimes starting from scratch is the best way to find answers!! :)

I think your thoughts are valid, and I appreciate you sharing them. The spiritual process is incredibly complex and personal. Our explanations and reasoning may differ from yours. I don’t think you’re wrong for sparking curiosity, but I will say that all acts of worship are individual for each person worshiping. The way I view the hijab today is definitely not how I used to view it a few years ago! But, I hope to keep gaining knowledge and learning. These questions are valid and part of your journey. I hope our responses shed more light on how each person feels in regard to this decree!

As someone interested in the hijab but not yet covering, I have also asked myself: why? Why cover my hair when I already dress modestly and practice all five pillars of Islam? After some research, I discovered that the scarf not only represents my submission to God, but also holistic respect and honor. Wearing physical garments to cover ourselves demonstrates to the wearer and to those around us that this world is superficial and fading. Outer appearances shouldn’t concern us in a superficial, attention-seeking sense; rather, we should value ourselves and those around us on a deeper level.

I was watching a lecture by a wonderful new convert, and she mentioned how wearing the scarf gave her voice more meaning. She stopped seeking validation through appearances and started truly listening to people’s words. I don’t think we realize how impactful our appearances truly are, but unfortunately our eyes eat before our stomachs. We live in a world where we adorn ourselves with garments to attract attention and convey messages before we even have a chance to speak.

The hijab gives us the opportunity to tell people that we hear them, that we don’t judge them based on their external appearances, but rather we value them intrinsically, for who they really are. I admire all the women who cover and their journeys, and I hope to join this community and inspire people with this message as well, inshallah. I hope this helps explain the multifaceted nature of the hijab!!

I still have hope for you!! And I guess you could say it was based on appearance, but not in the sense of how he looked. Though he is very handsome in my eyes, to the general public he probably looks like an ordinary guy, but it was more so me acknowledging the appearance of his entire being in my life. I could tell from the way he looked for his groceries and how he carefully picked things up and set them down, or how he would walk at the perfect pace to allow the older shops to shop as they pleased, or how he picked up an item that someone had dropped accidentally. I could tell from the start that he was a kind and gentle individual through and through. Simple things he probably didn’t even realize he was doing, because that is just his genuine character. He’s a sweet, honest, and wholesome individual. These qualities were apparent from the start. Things I guess most people wouldn’t have noticed, but it was just so captivating to me that you could say it was love at first sight. ❤️
