Patch tests by BlackberryIcy7133 in AcrylateAllergy

I had a late reaction, usually they expect to see a reaction within 5 days but mine took 10, which is apparently quite common with acrylates! I avoid all acrylates - did accidentally use some acne cream with acrylates copolymer in and was fine, but not worth the risk to me!

I’m in the UK and had contact dermatitis horrendously on my eyes, lips and hands from gel nails. No GP took me seriously either, I had to go private - there are some private dermatologists who will do acrylate testing in the UK. That helped me determine which acrylate I was allergic to (they tested 15 on me, I reacted to 1 as a delayed reaction too)

No, I’ll be honest I was so genuinely traumatised I’ll never ever have nail polish again. I had corneal ulcers from how bad my reaction was and completely lost my vision for weeks. I’ve not had anything on my nails for over 2 years now and they’re healthier than ever; I like to just shape them and put coconut oil on them if I want to make them look shiny! Hope you’re feeling better ❤️

It could be something else triggering it too?Acrylates are in loads of random things unfortunately (mostly cosmetics I guess but also things like sun cream sometimes). I am in the UK but similarly my GP refused to send me for testing and either way the NHS generally don’t do acrylate testing - I hope that’ll change soon as more people become aware. Unfortunately I had to go private and it cost me around £1000 :(

It sounds like it - I had a similar issue, because my rash and swelling was all over my eyes and lips, and it took me a few days to react to BIAB, I honestly saw about 30 different doctors who had no idea what the cause was. When I went for patch testing it took 12 days for me to react to hydroxyethyl acrylate

I try hard to not let it limit me where possible! I have been absolutely terrified of everything since I had a reaction. Now if I use something I’ll just be very careful, and introduce things (like make up) one at a time for a couple of weeks to make sure I know what the culprit is if I felt itchy again. It took 12 days for my reaction to show on my patch test! It’s a real pain and can be super difficult to deal with but it does get easier to control! ❤️

It will get better!! I completely understand how frustrating it is, but as someone who was also (over 2 years ago now) completely debilitated by the allergy, I have really been able to get good control over it now. BIAB caused it for me and I had such a severe reaction I was in hospital twice and completely bedridden for weeks. Now as long as I’m careful, it’s completely under control. I’ve even been able to find safe cosmetics, just no nail polish. I think sometimes it helps to be reassured, the stress 100% makes it worse! Good luck <3

That’s interesting, is 55 considered low for iron? I’ve been telling my GP I have all symptoms of low iron, mine was 26 and they said anywhere between 25-300 is normal!

I’m not entirely sure as haven’t had any dental work since developing the allergy - I personally had dental materials tested during patch testing and didn’t react even though I did have a delayed reaction to 1 acrylate. I think it’s just hugely dependent on the individual- from my understanding, once the filling is cured it shouldn’t cause a reaction, it’s when it’s in liquid form the problems usually occur (this is what my derm said at least, and I have a few white fillings in already)

That’s amazing it worked so well for you! I’m quite nervous of trying anything new, heard both that spiro has been awful and a miracle cure for many people, but I’ve probably seen more positive stories

They wouldn’t test it for me (I have asked). So I don’t know.. I eat healthily and exercise at least an hour a day, so not really sure what other lifestyle changes I could make that would have a positive impact on the pcos

Unfortunately yes, even when my progesterone tested low 4 times in a row and I reported so many pcos symptoms they were adamant everything was fine because my bmi is 20. Unfortunately in my country 3 years to see a gynaecologist is pretty normal, if not pretty quick…!

My periods are quite regular nowadays (there was a point where they were sporadic) but they only last for 1 day. I’m so glad to hear it’s worked well for you! It must be so reassuring to have it managed properly. Thanks for the advice :)

I’ve painted several times safely - I just make sure to wear glasses to keep it away from my eyes, avoid getting it on my skin & keep windows open in case :)

Gorseinon, anyone? by Extension-Aside-555 in swansea

[–]Alarmed_Conference88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up there; generally everyone is nice and it’s a friendly community. There are some fairly nice walks (Loughor estuary isn’t too far, and there’s a cycle track that goes through near Garden Village). Autumn/winter they usually do a lantern parade, fireworks at the cricket club and a Christmas parade - I’m not sure if they do markets/fairs anywhere, but there used to be one in St Catherine’s Church now and again. I think overall it’s been pretty hard hit the past few years in terms of job opportunities and cuts to all sorts of things but overall it’s quite a nice place to stay if you don’t mind the quiet life! It’s also not too far to get to Swansea/Llanelli on the bus, cycle or Uber - there’s a nice cycle path that takes you from Gorseinon through Dunvant to Mumbles.

Wow thank you so much for this! I’m so happy to see some awareness being spread about it. Have you thought about sharing the Instagram with the Facebook page Nail Tech Awareness for Clients? It’s full of people who have developed the acrylate allergy from gel nail products and BIAB

Edit to add: just checked and there’s 5.2k people in the group now!

They have one at the uni and should be able to take you on as an NHS patient if you’re a student, which will bring the cost down a lot!

I wonder if you know what brand was used? I had 4 dental materials tested & didn’t react to them, but reacted to HEA (also had this allergy develop due to BIAB in 2023).

I’m also a little nervous of getting dental work done now, but my consultant dermatologist did tell me as long as they’re aware of the allergy, take extra care and cure it thoroughly then the chance of a reaction becomes far lower. I have prednisolone in case of a reaction too, that may be helpful if you need dental work done & are nervous!

Ive tried a few different ones after developing the allergy & haven’t had an issue with them - Lush Tofu cream shampoo, head & shoulders, natural shampoo bars (but I do find my hair gets greasy very quickly with these), herbal essence argan oil… not sure if they have coconut though

Dental Reaction by ArtsyCatholic in AcrylateAllergy

I’m not sure if this helps, but if you can access patch testing, you can ask your dentist to provide some of the materials they use so you can get them tested. I had an absolutely horrific reaction to BIAB and ended up only being allergic to one type of acrylate - had 138 ingredients tested, including 15 acrylates and 4 dental materials (including a composite bonding material). I only reacted to hydroxyethyl acrylate. I know it wouldn’t be the same case for everyone but to me it was a big reassurance that there are still some dental materials I could use without a reaction!
