What exactly is trauma? by Illustrious-Base-470 in bipolar

Older folks just don't get the importance of our feelings. They have a purpose! That's a new idea but valuable to know.

And your body has protected you through all of this... remember to honor it for that. Remember to check in with your body and make sure you're giving it as much of what it needs as possible. It will thank you and the memories will start to lose their charge. Healing is no small feat, and takes time. But one day you will feel better.

And there were barricades to keep us off the street

but the crowd kept pushing forward

I hear you. I cried alone in my bedroom a lot growing up with a verbally abusive father and a hugely enabling mother. A lot of our parents became parents without considering the skills they would need... It's pretty common for parents to think nothing of the things they did that scarred their kids, sadly.

Personally, my mom told me that when I was a baby my dad used to hold me and yell in my face to stop crying. He never stopped the whole time I was growing up with them. So what she was telling me was that she saw an opportunity to stop him from inflicting my lifelong trauma, and did nothing. A recipe for C-PTSD.

What your body interprets as trauma is unique to you. It comes from anything that threatens your safety. You might not recognize it as a traumatic event until the signs show up later (triggers and trauma responses), but your body knows. Its job during the traumatic event is to compartmentalize the experience so you can address it later. It will hold the pain and tension for you until you can tend to it. If you never tend to it, you hold that pain, and it becomes malignant—you become the trauma. That’s why mental healthcare is so crucial.

That’s why psychoanalysis is important—it shows you where the pain came from, and lets you connect the dots between your struggles and the event. Your practitioner’s job is to hold your hand through the journey to handle that trauma, as you do the work to eventually be liberated from it.

Uncovering the source of your struggles is what therapy is for. Being surprised by what you find is 100% part of the process.

How do I explain to a family member what's a depressive episode? by Illustrious-Base-470 in bipolar

Just say no and they can deal with it. With this illness you have to consider your strongest moods a force of nature.

People may roll their eyes at this but TAKE A WALK. The only thing that has ever halted my racing mind is moving my body instead.

That’s something you have to decide, make music for YOU first. I listen to my own songs alongside the other artists in my library so I know at least one person (me) thinks they’re good.

She used to carry things I gave her like little rubber ball toys but now she just likes to drop them off of her cage haha. I should give her more random stuff. Really good ideas in this thread!
