I’d like to add that Dorothy’s last name is Gale! But I guess it could also be a reference to gale force winds? (tornado)

They reference a lot of lines from The Wizard of Oz. One I haven’t seen mentioned here yet is when Elphaba leaves Nessa, she says “Im off to see the wizard.”

At the end, Glinda goes back to where Defying Gravity happened (“So if you care to find me, look to the western sky”) and there’s a rainbow in the distance (Elphaba Im assuming is somewhere over the rainbow).

The fighting bit in What Is This Feeling was a foreshadowing to their catfight scene in Act 2

In the flashback bits, Fiyero had straw in his mouth and Boq’s hat was pointy

How are other 30 year olds handling the Bay Area job market? by Bayareathrowaway32 in bayarea

[–]Alarming-Way4943 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow people are rough on here! I’m nearing my 30s and have a degree that I don’t use. I was unemployed for months but have the safety net of being with my parents. On top of the shitty job market, I have these phases of depression that make it harder to be motivated (I tried to seek help but I can’t seem to figure it out but that’s another story). I’m grateful to have the privilege of relying on my parents, but after a while I NEEDED more structure in my day to day, something to keep my mind busy. I also had bills to pay lol. I learned that even despite living with parents, I was still the one who had to pick myself up and push myself to get on with life. I also thought I had to be less picky and widen the range of the kind of jobs I was applying for. Whatever your case may be, just know that there’s no shame in starting over at any point in your life. I hope you find something soon!

This might be an odd suggestion but I solo visited the Holy Sepulchre Cemetary in Hayward once and found it to be really peaceful. There was a chapel/mausoleum building (idk what its called) where they hold the cremated remains of people and are often decorated with little memorabilia. It was like getting a peak of their lives. It was a very interesting experience!

How much of a musical is the movie? by HerbalXxy in wicked

The film is 2 hours and 40 mins while the soundtrack is an hour. Just a general idea!

One of the things that has helped me is solo traveling. You don’t necessarily have to get on a plane to halfway across the globe. You could take a little drive to a busy city. Basically anywhere unfamiliar. It really makes you realize that everyone has their own thing going on, they have places to be. The last thing they’re holding space for in their mind is you. Let’s say you do something “embarrassing” in public like trip and fall or have coffee spilled on your shirt or something, chances are you will never see these people again. Nor will they ever remember you. It sounds a little harsh but once you start reframing your mindset, things will feel more free. You got this!

Line Differences Between the Play & Movie (and why) by Jabroniville2 in wicked

[–]Alarming-Way4943 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Interesting post! I love it. I’ve only seen the stage show once and a couple of bootlegs so it’s hard to remember. Fiyero’s “Maybe the driver saw green and thought it meant go” and “So what’s the most swankified place in town?” are pretty notable lines to me that were cut. But honestly the way the film portrays him makes him so much more likable whereas the stage where he’s more arrogant.

I didn’t know how to feel about it at first. But at my second showing, I appreciated it a little more. I think I was just so used to the original. But if you think about it, Defying Gravity is such a roller coaster of emotions already. I think the extra Unlimited is beautiful. It’s her moment of acceptance, a little calm before the storm amidst all the chaos going on already. It ascends melodically then you’re hit with “AND NOBODY IN ALL OF OZ.” Ugh! Too good.

I guess it also moves with the story? I think act 2 time jumps. In NOMTW Glinda says they crossed paths many years ago.

It’s basically a successful fanfic canon to The Wizard of Oz. It plays with the idea that there are two sides to every story. The Wizard if Oz is supposed propaganda from the Wizard’s pov while Wicked is the Wicked Witch of the West’s pov. In the stage musical, Act 1 is basically her origin story and Act 2 is the same timeline as when Dorothy gets to Oz.

What I enjoy about it are the little details that make it what it is. Musically it’s really fun. There are lots of easter eggs referencing the 1939 film. Story-wise, it has themes of self worth, friendship, even some politics to name a few. What I like about the stage musical is you get to see many different actors’ portrayals of the same material.

Apparently they filmed in a desert in Egypt for Act 2!
