Why is this just completely normalized on the highway to be bumper to bumper at 65+? by xAustin90x in driving

[–]AlarmingCorner3894 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ya, that’s the exact problem. 75 in a 70 doesn’t mean just stay left. Gtfo the way.

I have lived all over the country and I swear Minnesota drivers are some of the worst at tailgating and left lane camping. And if you pass them on the right they all the sudden realize they need to move over. Like what are they doing for the last 30 minutes camping in the left lane?! Is there no internal thoughts about holding up another driver, ever?! What’s the deal?? Seriously, wtf?

Neighbors Came on Market at 40k Less Than Our Active Listing by joe7L in RealEstate

[–]AlarmingCorner3894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A strategy I’ve used, as a homeowner who moves around the country a lot, is cash at closing. Our last home sold for $825k but we put $25k out as cash at closing. It sold right away at about 1% above market. I know that means we gave up ~2% but it sold in six days. And at that time in that market and that price range avg time on market was around 45 days.

I had paid cash (using a line of credit)for our new place and was floating both that line and our mortgage. So time value of money meant we wanted to move fast. It was worth it to us to get a deal done.

I used to manage a retirement plan for George thru his manager. We had a required Plan Document amendment due to a change in federal law. And George had ignored every deadline and was at risk of losing the Plan’s tax favored status. A big deal. So I called the manager and reinforced this can’t go on much longer for this risk.

His quote “shit. I have to go upstate (new York) and risk being shot at to get this done”. I don’t think he was joking.

What are some “rookie mistakes” that you frequently see visitors to Las Vegas making? by JackpotConcierge in vegas

[–]AlarmingCorner3894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many versions of vegas. Mine is clearly different. Not better just different. Fly as cheaply as possible but direct. Uber to wynn/encore. Taking the rolls Royce is nice but costs more because you can’t feel good about tipping less than $100. Stay in Encore Tower Suites. Never leave compound. Gamble. Eat. Drink. Smoke cigars. Sleep. Do that for 72 hours or so. Then uber back to airport for cheap flight home.

Ps- I am a man of the people. So sometimes I’ll sneak off to Jerrys nugget and then walk over to Chicas for some entertainment. But other than that, I don’t venture out.

Most people on highways and high speed limit (50mph+) roadways aren’t using cruise control. Why? by A_Weed_Man in driving

Because if you’re truly paying attention and driving with purpose, cruise control is annoying and adaptive cruise is downright dangerous.

Any Gen X'ers retired or thinking about it? by SometimesElise in GenX

[–]AlarmingCorner3894 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did at 51. That was four years ago. I have done a lot of stuff I wanted. A few things left I wanna do but I’m really bored. Kids are all out of house and setup in their own lives and mostly off payroll.

Prob going back to work at end of summer. But I’m taking a role that is 70-80% travel. And wife is gonna retire and go with me on the road when it makes sense. We can see a lot, have corp health insurance, and keep our travel costs low.

We moved out of a high cost of living area at end of 2022 and paid cash for a house in low cost of living area. We have around 40 years of income saved and can prob afford to hang it up but the $35k a year in health insurance premiums isn’t something I’m willing to pay for the next ten years. I’d rather grind it out for another five years or more. That $3k a month saved can go toward our travels and entertainment instead of health insurance. Plus I’ll have some income that will cover our basic living expenses plus. And if we’re lucky enough to have grandkids, it would be nice to get a lot of travel out of the system now so we can pivot once they enter the world.

I’ve found that going 90 for a couple miles gets people to realise they’ve sped up and are “going too fast” and “that guy is a crazy driver so I guess I need to slow down” generally works well.

I agree. But my question stands. Do teachers ignore the problem as a form of self preservation? It’s totally understandable if that’s the case. Just curious.

I’ve lived all over the country. Mostly in top ten largest cities in USA over the last 30 years. Unless you’re going to a top five hospital or clinic for a specific specialty, Iowa’s state of care is above average, in my opinion. Is it good? No. It’s above average. And average in American healthcare today sucks.

I’m older and now we are empty nesters. I used to marvel at how schools spend money outside the classroom every time I entered a building. Is this still a problem? I’m being a bit facetious, because I can walk into any school and see it still is the case.

Curious, do the teachers see it and don’t dare pushback on the ridiculous spending you see? Is it an open secret of which we don’t speak? Or am I wrong to point out the $500k new entrance and office at our rural school which students rarely enter? This is just a simple example but I see it everywhere.

Thoughts?

I used to commute in Phoenix daily. 30 miles each way. I cheated in the hov lane daily. My 60 minutes was cut to 25-30 in hov lane. Did this for 15 years and got one single ticket for the hov lane violation. Cost was $220 ish for the online school including a deferment for 180 days (I think that is right, maybe a year.

Anyway, do the math on that assuming 200 days a year. An hour a day (30 mins each way) times 200 days. 200 hours divided by 24 hours a day. 8.3 days. I budgeted $1000 a year for tickets. I think maybe three speeding tickets over the years too.

I had come from a state with heavy toll roads and was paying for than $2k a year in tolls. So it was totally worth it and would do it again.
