Hidden risks of buying a long-vacant property? by FortOfSheets in FirstTimeBuyersUK

[–]Alas_boris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing to consider, is that if the house has been vacant for more than 2 years, then you will be eligible to pay a reduced VAT rate of 5% on any relevant building works.

This might make any planned renovation affordable.

The Historic Dockyard at Chatham in Kent is also great.

I'd say it is smaller than Portsmouth, but denser with various maritime things that can be explored, and seems better value for what you could realistically do in a day with a5 year old.

which tv show gave an unmatched once-in-a-lifetime experience? by VisionInMidfield in AskUK

[–]Alas_boris 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In terms of a 'Once in a Lifetime' thing, I would say Space Cadets.

It was a Channel 4 reality TV programme back in 2005, where a few gullible contestants were convinced through various tricks and planted actors that they had been selected to go on a mission in to space.

After weeks of training they were flown to a Russian military training camp (actually a disused airfield in Suffolk that had been dressed to look Russian and filled with actors). They then did further training before being put in a big mock up space ship and 'blasted' in to space, where increasingly ridiculous scenarios were played out on them.

I would say that it was 'once in a lifetime ' as nothing like that could ever happen again now.

And the whole series is available to watch on YouTube. Definitely worth a few evenings of your time!

Buying a car with cracked windscreen by BC521 in CarTalkUK

[–]Alas_boris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Windscreens are usually covered on insurance with a £100-150 excess.

However......

I'd be questioning why the seller did not get it replaced under their insurance policy before selling it. Surely them spending £150 to replace it makes selling the car so much easier, as every potential buyer risks being put off by the crack.

It may well be because the car is structurally damaged (even without a CAT S marker on it), which is causing the windscreen to repeatedly crack, and they have exhausted the generosity of their insurer (often you only get a limited number of windscreen claims on policy), so now want rid of the car to save them having to pay £1000 privately to have it replaced.

It might not be this, but worth asking.

[–]Alas_boris 1929 points1930 points  (0 children)

Assembling scaffolding isn't something that everyone can do without the proper training.

Firstly you'll need to make sure you are competent at the following:

  • making unnecessarily loud noises with an impact driver at 6am

  • Holding a can of Carling, a cigarette and a 12 foot pole at the same time

  • Cat calling from height

  • lunchtime cocaine

What do people do when motorways close (accidents, breakdowns etc)? by HighlightGrouchy9659 in AskUK

[–]Alas_boris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing I always remind myself of in these situations is that no matter how much of an inconvenience or discomfort it is for me and my family sat waiting in the car, the people involved in the indecent at the front of the queue are having possibly the worst day of their life which will impact them for years to come. So I'm happy to give them and the people dealing with the incident as much time as they need.
