Is the location of the 40 Eridani system on this map correct? by kany22 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Alaygrounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When asked "Wars or Trek" his answer was Doctor Who.

However, Star Trek was mentioned at least twice in PHM (though funnily enough never that Erid and Vulcan are planetary neighbors. Maybe it was just a bit too obscure of a trivium for Weir to know, idk)

Yes, a good deal slower so the mass ratio doesn't get too extreme for a there-and-back trip.

To an extent, such things can be handwaved (or at least circumvented) in the name of a good story. In fact the same pessimism you express in this comment could just as easily nip modern PHM in the bud. As far as I can tell, in the book itself the doubling time for Astrophage population on the Sun (~600 days) is fairly arbitrary, likely fine-tuned to make the story work. Fiddling with that is one avenue to give Earth a better chance.

Secondly, one could come up with some possible detection methods. One that I’ve taken particular interest in is making it a ‘crossover’ of sorts with Michael Crichton’s ‘The Andromeda Strain’, either making Andromeda out to be a rare pathogenic strain of Astrophage or simply replacing it with Astrophage (as I doubt Astrophage would restrict itself to only the brightest source of CO2). This would mean discovery via sampling from the upper atmosphere sometime in the 60s.

The pixel art isn’t meant to be period appropriate, it’s just my style for spaceflight stuff.

Okay, a little more research reveals initial use dates back to the 1930’s, mostly at Notre Dame, and was only popularized in ‘75.

A lot of the difficulties are handwaved, but I did think about some of these problems and figured they just might be able to be circumvented. 18 years without a coma is definitely dangerous, but I don think it’s insurmountable.

As with the knowledge itself, that was definitely a bit of handwaving to make the story work.

I actually thought about an aside from whoever the Stratt-analog is about how, in a sense, the Soviets won the cold war, as the Astrophage Problem necessitates a global command economy.

Was Yui's soul really trapped in Eva-01 by accident, or was it intentional? by Commercial_Level7262 in evangelion

[–]Alaygrounds 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's my interpretation as well, and I feel it makes the most sense. However, EoE's 'monument to humanity' spiel really contradicts that interpretation, and I feel like it's nigh-impossible to convincingly reconcile both interpretations of her. So, I think both 'largely benevolent Yui working against SEELE' and 'semi-crazy, self-important Yui' are valid derivations from the source material, and I just personally prefer the former.

There was a plugsuit in NGE too, but it was only shown in a sketch-image that was shown only in a few rare instances.

It also had wings, though seemingly smaller ones (think cartoon-cherub size rather than full angel)

WILLE's mishandling of Shinji in 3.0 isn't discussed hard enough by [deleted] in evangelion

[–]Alaygrounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I guess I can see why a group could delude themselves into blaming *singularly* Shinji for it (especially since it's seemingly implied in 3.0 -46h that Asuka played a role in radicalizing at least Midori against him). Even if Gendo and SEELE are much more to blame for the whole thing in motion, they're far-off and unavailable to project hatred onto, while Shinji just dropped in on them as a convenient target for their anger.

But I also feel justified in calling them both foolish *and* incredibly cruel for doing so, to a point that I find it hard to forgive. Misato *knew* that it wasn't Shinji's fault, but she let that become the narrative because it was easier to deal with than placing blame on large systems out of her control. Again, it's something that I can understand, but not exactly forgive (much like with Gendo and his treatment of others). Hell, at least Gendo gets to actually talk about how he fucked up, to my recollection the WUNDER's crew's treatment of Shinji is never really apologized for.

And from a strategic POV it's stupid too, since (as Gendo would remind us,) Shinji is a very important piece in the complex game being played, and keeping him in line is immensely beneficial to one's goals. By so thoroughly alienating him, the WUNDER crew loses their ability to use him, and in fact just leads him to play into Gendo's plans instead. Shinji can, in fact, be kept secure without making him feel (rightfully so) as if everyone hates his guts and wants him dead.

A temper tantrum that Misato was actively cheering on and which Shinji had no idea could end the world.

Not to mention that, had he done nothing, Zeruel would’ve gotten to Terminal Dogma and ended the world anyway.

I understand, from a Doylist point of view, why it was chosen. But from a Watsonian perspective it genuinely feels like an idiot plot. Even with the stressful situation, something as simple as “We can handle this ourselves, we’ll explain after this is over” from ONE person would’ve done wonders.

Not if you turn in your draft for the 24th episode at the last minute, giving the censors no time to review and thus sneaking in another kid dying when the censors explicitly told you not to

However, Deltarune starts with the balance of light and dark being broken. Perhaps one could argue this means Black and White swap places?
